The southern quadrant of the Montalcino hill follows its own logic: more warmth, more sunshine, and a ripening process that is more consistent and complete than in cooler exposures. Tenuta Campogiovanni is situated precisely here – on medium-heavy silt-sand soils over sandstone and limestone, on a site that gives Sangiovese Grosso reliability in poor years and depth in great years. 2021 was a great year – but it began with a shock. A mild, dry winter had brought forward budbreak; by the end of March, the best-exposed vineyards were already sprouting. Then came the April nights. Temperatures dropped below zero, and the early buds froze. Yields were significantly reduced. What followed was a rainy spring, which helped the vines survive a long and very hot summer. The grapes that survived concentrated what they had. Harvest took place from the third week of September into October.
The Campogiovanni Brunello is a classic: 20 days’ maceration in steel, followed by malolactic fermentation. Then 36 months – three years – inLiters French oakLiters and 60-hectolitre Slavonian oak botti. This combination is the estate’s hallmark: the small casks impart texture and subtle spice, whilst the large casks provide depth and stability without overpowering the wine. Followed by 12 months’ bottle ageing.
Deep ruby red. On the nose, well-ripened wild berries, blackberry jam, tobacco leaf and tanned leather – ; dense and expressive. Expansive and generous on the palate, with a rich body and a long final characterised by fruit liqueur. A Brunello that demonstrates how Montalcino’s southern slope offers a distinct expression of the appellation. SUPERIORE.DE
"A deep, dark ruby red. On the nose, ripe plum, mint and thyme, along with a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, it is juicy with crisp acidity, dark fruit and slightly rough tannins, leading to final medium-length, spicy final. Should be left to age a little longer." Falstaff
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino presents a haunting, dark colour in the glass, with spicy notes of dried cherries, cloves and menthol-like herbs that tantalise the senses. It is mature in style and boasts a refreshing acidity that highlights its red and black fruit flavours. Lively yet structured, the 2021 tickles the palate with youthful vigour, whilst hints of liquorice slowly fade." Vinous
"Blueberries and spices with a hint of cedarwood and dried flowers. Medium to full-bodied, with firm, crisp, clearly defined tannins and a clean, taut finish. Can be enjoyed now, but will benefit from a few years’ bottle ageing." James Suckling
"It combines elegance with structure and initially captivates with aromas of cherry, strawberry, earth and spices. Supported by lively acidity and underpinned by a hint of dusty tannins, this red wine reveals mineral and herbaceous notes in its long-lasting finish." Wine Spectator
