There are vintages that you can sense even whilst in the vineyard. 2021 was one of them: April frosts reduced yields by up to a third; what remained ripened slowly and fully under a long, hot, dry summer. No rain in September, no rush to harvest – a luxury afforded by this vintage and one that is rare in Montalcino. For Giancarlo Pacenti and his north-facing Pelagrilli vineyards, this meant ideal conditions for a Brunello of classic elegance.

In the glass, the 2021 Pelagrilli speaks a different language to its predecessor. A brilliant ruby red. On the nose, fresh cherry, orange blossom, cedar and a subtle herbal note – fragrant, precise, with a clarity reminiscent of great vintages of the past. The palate is taut and linear, with fine-grained, well-structured tannins that underpin the wine and demand time to develop. The acidity is impeccably integrated, and the final is long and characterised by a mineral freshness. A Brunello that is already enchanting today and will have even more to say in twenty years' time.
