Sometimes it takes a single vineyard to understand what a vintage really means. 2021: "fragrante, definite e verticale" – is the official verdict of some Masters of Wine. Fragrant, precise, vertical. For Le Lucére, this east-facing parcel on Galestro and slate, this sounds like a description of the wine's characteristics. No vintage in recent years fits the DNA of this site as well as 2021. The late frost in April decimated the quantities – what remained was more concentrated, healthier, more focussed. No heat stress in summer. A relaxed harvest at the end of September, in which the vines gave the last of what the season had to offer: clear fruit, lively acidity, fine-grained tannins. Caciorgna let the vintage speak for itself.

Bright ruby red in the glass with a blue-violet reflection that promises and delivers vibrancy. The nose has a clarity that is rare in Montalcino: fresh cherry, redcurrant, wild rose blossom, lavender herbs, deep slate minerality. Upright and precise on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and an acidity that leads rather than stings. The finish – long, aromatic, mineral – lingers. "The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére shows a darker colour and more fruit weight compared to the Comunali, giving the wine depth and texture. While the Comunali feels lean on the palate, the Le Lucére shows breadth and a more individual character, characterised by its single-vineyard provenance with distinctive yellowish sandstone soils. Aromas of wild plums and dark currants give way to light smoke and a mineral flint note that emphasises the wine's freshness, while the tannins in this Brunello feel somewhat sweet." Wine Advocate

"I tasted the San Filippo wines blind with a few dozen other Brunello and the family resemblance was unmistakable – concentration and freshness as well as a lively flavour. This single vineyard bottling takes all of that up a notch with added intensity and complexity. On the nose, there is mint, allspice, cloves, sandalwood and cinnamon. A juicy note emerges beneath the dense, youthful, almost candied fruit of the dark cherry. The structure is also clear here, with taut, crisp tannins that hold everything firmly in place.
