The year 2020 carries a heavy burden in our memories. Pandemic, silence, state of emergency. The vines didn't care. They grew – under a sun that knew no mercy in July and August. Up to 40 degrees in Tuscany. Water reserves scarce. The consortium's message: "annata versatile", a changeable vintage. What sounds diplomatic meant that the differences between the estates were greater in 2020 than ever before. San Filippo was one of the beneficiaries. The north-east exposure at 260 to 280 metres, the clayey-limestone subsoil with slate components – this terroir does not lose its freshness when others have long since lost it. Organic cultivation since 2013: soils that breathe, buffer. Vines that know stress, but don't break from it.
Ruby red with violet reflections, denser than 2018, softer than 2019. Ripe Amarena cherries, plums, dried herbs, some leather and dark chocolate on the nose. The palate is round, juicy, with warm tannins – the vintage is accessible, almost inviting. No tense structure that demands years of patience. Anyone who opens this Brunello now and over the next few years will find a wine that is ready – relaxed, present, with plenty of charm. SUPERIORE.DE
"This red is light-bodied and elegant, expressing strawberry, cherry, blood orange, graphite and thyme flavors. Balanced in a slim, linear way, with a lingering finish of fruit and wild herbs." Wine Spectator
"Vibrant and intense, the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino San Filippo dei Comunali bursts from the glass with a vivid black raspberry and clove bouquet complicated by dried orange peels and hints of incense. It displays silken textures and polished red and blue fruits that swirl across the palate and slowly drench the senses in primary concentration. The 2020 finishes long and spicy, yet lifted in feel, leaving a web of sweet tannins and a bitter tinge of sour citrus to linger on." Vinous
"Dei Comunali brings together various parcels for a snapshot of the San Filippo hamlet. Aromas of spiced dark red cherry and forest floor are focused and precise. Full of vigour and substance, it has confidently extracted tannins which dissolve with a grainy texture and are well absorbed by pulpy red berries. Hints of mint and sweet earth perfume the palate, though the oak veneer still needs integrating. A slight oxidative note suggests this will evolve at a relatively rapid pace." Decanter
"Ripe and balsamic style with macerated violets and some lifted aromas of black cherries. The attack is firm with tight and chalky tannins, crisp acidity and medium to full body. A bit too young at the moment, but both the complexity and integration will increase with time." James Suckling
"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is first defined by its brightness and acidic freshness that is dialed-in nicely. Fruit comes from the estate's historic vineyard plot. The wine is angular and sharp on the palate with tart berry flavors, bitter cassis, pink peppercorn and spice. The tannins are on the chalky side, and the wine delivers crisp flavors over a medium-plus finish. I suggest you give this wine more time to mellow out." Wine Advocate
