2020 posed a simple question for Montalcino's winegrowers: who has the better terroir? In a hot, dry year – august temperatures close to 40 degrees – it was not just the manual labour in the vineyard that decided, but the geology. Le Lucére responded with Galestro and slate: soils that hold water deeper, moderate temperatures and preserve freshness when patience and acidity have long since given way elsewhere. Organic farming since 2013 has paid off many times over in years like these. Living soils, deep-rooted vines, no drought stress that forces chemical interventions. Paolo Caciorgna didn't have to save anything. He just had to listen.
The result is a Le Lucére that interprets the hot vintage in its own way: fuller, rounder, with ripe fruit of juicy Amarena, dark plum and liquorice, softly embedded spicy notes and velvety tannins. The wine is accessible, almost sensually relaxed – and yet the Galestro carries its unmistakable mineral signature through the entire finish. No tense structure that demands decades. A Brunello that makes its mark when young – and very convincingly so. SUPERIORE.DE
"This red wine shows a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and savoury elements, richness and structure, with aromas of cherries, berries, orange peel, flowers and sweet spices. Harmonious and solidly built, with a long, gripping finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére evolves slowly with a mix of dried rose, underbrush and smoky black cherry flavours that are floral and dark. It is elegant and supple with a depth of ripe wild berry flavours punctuated by crisp mineral tones as fine-grained tannins accumulate towards the finish. A hint of violet blossom combines with blackberries and a touch of sage as the 2020 finishes dramatically long and structured with a mentholated hint that maintains freshness. This wine is beautifully balanced and classic in flavour. Bury it in the cellar." Vinous
"Intense and super youthful character here. Precise wine with bright cherries, delicate fresh roses and violets, restrained blood oranges and roasted milk chocolate flavours. Almost estery flavours on the full-bodied palate with crisp, integrated acidity and well-formed tannins that show a youthful chalkiness on the finish." James Suckling
"The Brunello di Montalcino le Lucére 2020 opens with dark concentration and a deep garnet red colour that sets the tone for a sultry flavour profile that pairs well with gamey meats. This version shows a very bright fruit supported by a rich acidity that allows for a long and lively finish. Like the other wines in this portfolio, this single-vineyard wine is dense and straightforward with a certain astringency to the tannins. This elegant wine is matured in a combination of large oak barrels and barriques for up to 28 months, with the remainder of the maturation period taking place in the bottle." Wine Advocate
