"Fragrante, definite e verticale." This is how some Masters of Wine describe the 2021 Brunello vintage – fragrant, precise, vertical. Rarely does an official assessment so accurately capture the essence of a wine. Yet 2021 was not an easy year. An unusually late frost in April decimated the quantities, delayed growth and – and quietly did the wine some good. No extreme heatwaves afterwards. No drought stress to panic the vines. Instead: an even summer, dry ripening, a relaxed harvest from the end of September. The soils on the eastern slopes of Montalcino, a mixture of red clay, limestone and slate, came into their own in 2021. San Filippo's organic certification pays off particularly well in years like these: living soils that retain water and deliver precision.
The 2021 shines bright, almost transparent ruby red in the glass. The nose – and this is what distinguishes this vintage from all others – is of breathtaking clarity: fresh cherry, redcurrant, rose petal, iris, a hint of dried herbs, deep mineral. On the palate it is taut, upright, with a precision of acidity that gives you goose bumps and fine-grained tannins that are still gripping today. The long finish holds the line. This small-production Brunello whispers – and if you listen carefully, you can sense that something great is about to emerge. Wait until at least 2028. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich ruby red colour with a violet hue. Harmonious on the nose, redcurrant and cherry as well as a hint of cigar box and Mediterranean herbs. Additional dark chocolate on the palate, great interplay of tannins and acidity, spicy finish." Falstaff
"Distinguishing itself from San Filippo’s Le Lucère bottling, Comunali comes from the estate’s lower plots. It brings together 50-year-old vines with newer plantings established in 2012 and 2016 to take advantage of the gentle northeast exposure. A vibrant, rather fruity nose of strawberry is accented by liquorice and spicy green peppercorn. Tannins are suede-like from the start. Purple, almost grapey fruit sports a glossy, candied sheen. Hefty but lightened by fresh acidity, while this might seem a bit naive at the moment, age could lend some wisdom." Decanter
"A bit shy initially, the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Comunali is crisp and bright, showing a simple, transparent Sangiovese character underlined by wild berry fruit and vibrant acidity. Medium- to full-bodied in texture with greater power expressed through length rather than weight, the wine settles into elegant aromas of crushed stone, white pepper and wild rose. It feels light and streamlined on the palate with drying tannins, again driven by the lift of that bright acidity. The Comunali name reflects a blend of estate parcels across Montalcino." Wine Advocate
"Captivating aromas of licorice, plums and cherries follow through to a medium to full body with fine, creamy tannins and a refined, textured finish. So beautiful and enjoyable now, but will age beautifully." James Suckling
