"Fragrant, precise and vertical." This is how some Masters of Wine describe the 2021 Brunello vintage – fragrant, precise, vertical. Rarely does an official assessment capture the very essence of a wine so accurately. Yet 2021 was no easy year. An unusual late frost in April decimated yields, delayed growth – and, quietly, did the wine a world of good. No extreme heatwaves followed. No drought stress to send the vines into a panic. Instead: a steady summer, dry ripening, and a relaxed harvest from the end of September onwards. The soils of Montalcino's eastern slopes – that mixture of red clay, limestone and slate – came into their own in 2021. San Filippo's organic certification pays particular dividends in years like these: living soils that retain water and deliver precision.

In the glass, the 2021 vintage glows with a bright, almost transparent ruby red colour. The nose – and this is what sets this vintage apart from all the others – is of breathtaking clarity: fresh cherry, redcurrant, rose petal, iris, a hint of dried herbs, and deep minerality. On the palate, it is taut and upright, with a precision of acidity that sends shivers down the spine, and fine-grained tannins that still grip the palate today. The long finish holds its line. "The Comunali differs from San Filippo's Le Lucère and comes from the lower plots of the estate. It combines 50-year-old vines with more recent plantings from 2012 and 2016 to benefit from the gentle north-easterly aspect. A lively, quite fruity bouquet of strawberries is accentuated by liquorice and spicy green pepper. The tannins have a suede-like quality right from the start. The violet, almost grape-like fruit has a glossy, candied sheen. The wine is full-bodied, yet is lightened by fresh acidity. At the moment it may still seem a little immature, but with age it could gain in depth." Decanter

"The Brunello di Montalcino Comunali 2021 is somewhat reserved at first, displaying a simple, transparent Sangiovese character underpinned by wild berry fruit and lively acidity. The wine has a medium to full body, with its power expressed more through its length than its weight, manifesting in elegant aromas of crushed stone, white pepper and wild roses. On the palate, it feels light and streamlined, with drying tannins that are, in turn, supported by the lively acidity. The name "Comunali" reflects a blend of the estate's plots in Montalcino."
