• "Sassicaia" Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2017

      “Sassicaia” Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2017

Enormously complex on the nose: we discover cassis, elderberries, heart-cherries and floral and mineral-earthy notes. In the mouth it is firm, precise and yet extremely elegant and balsamic, with a lot of juiciness and a very fine tannin, which is already irresistible in its young years. We have seldom enjoyed a wine that is so dense and full and at the same time seduces with a balance that makes it unique. Further bottle maturity is inevitably rewarded, although a further increase seems hardly imaginable. SUPERIORE.DE

"With this wine, more than 50 years ago, the success story of international grape varieties began in Bolgheri: the Incisa della Rocchetta family recognised the potential of the Bordeaux grape varieties and created this monolith of Italian wine culture. To this day, it is produced almost unchanged and mainly from Cabernet Franc: an appealing nose of fresh stone fruit, juniper and tobacco; the attack is polished, the tannins fine-grained and fresh, invigorating acidity, an extremely complex final on notes of red fruit and spices. Always one of the most elegant interpretations of the terroir." Vinum

"The 2017 Sassicaia is a fascinating wine that symbolizes a never-ending tug-of-war between vintner and vintage. The question is who comes out on top? In this case, my money is on the vintner. The 2017 vintage, characterized by scorching heat and drought across much of Italy, was not an easy one. This Sassicaia represents 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Cabernet Franc, with most of the fruit coming from the Tenuta's historic vineyards Castiglioncello, Quercione and Doccino. These plots are all located on the back hill of Bolgheri at slightly higher elevations where they enjoy cooler nighttime temperatures. Old vines also have a deeper root system that is key to braving dry and hot summers. You can absolutely taste those choices here thanks to the wine's aromatic profile that offers more variety-driven green highlights of wild berry, forest floor and bramble than I would have expected. With time, as the wine takes on more air in the glass, you get a hint of summer plum or cherry cough drop, and this, to my surprise, is the only subtle reminder of the hot vintage encountered. I found the aromas here to be authentically "Tuscan" in character, more so than other vintages, with balsamic and Mediterranean elements that borrow directly from the Sangiovese playbook. The decision to use more neutral oak favors the reduction of oxygen and softens the tannic profile. Although the wine does end with a hint of bitterness, it took on noticeably more volume and soft richness the longer I kept my sample in the glass." Robert Parker

"A taut, densely wrought red, with black currant, black cherry, iron, wild herb and spice flavors matched to the elegant frame and restrained character. Balanced and long, this has a distinctly Old World feel and looks set to unravel its complex facets slowly." Wine Spectator

"The 2017 Sassicaia is dark, sensual and rich, which is a good thing, as the tannins - the result of a warm, dry year in which phenolic ripening was difficult to fully reach - are also quite powerful. I tasted the 2017 from an approximate blend from barrel, where the wines are still aging in separate lots. It will be interesting to see where things end up once the wine is in bottle." Vinous

"The balance and beauty to this is impressive, offering sweet, ripe currants and flowers with some crushed-stone and dry-earth undertones. Full-bodied with soft, polished tannins and a long, creamy-textured finish. It’s polished, yet concentrated. Better after 2022, but already very seductive." James Suckling

"Aromas of exotic spice, baked plum and French oak mingle with camphor and blue flower on the nose. This boasts extraordinary elegance and freshness despite the hot vintage, delivering flavors of juicy Marasca cherry, spiced blueberry, tobacco and licorice. Velvety, fine-grained tannins provide support while coffee and crushed mint linger on the finish." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Sassicaia" Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2018

      “Sassicaia” Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2018

In its 50th vintage, Sassicaia could hardly be more typical or distinctive. After a rather mixed spring, the weather then became so warm and dry that the Cabernet grapes were finally able to ripen optimally and make this flagship Bolgheri unmistakable in a remarkably pure and personality-strong appearance. Thus, the 2018 edition became a model of balance and finesse, gliding down the palate almost weightlessly and in a precisely proportioned frame.

Fascinating bouquet of cherries, flowers, some chocolate, wild herbs and plums. The overall package of this wine is equal to its jubilee, Sassicaia 2018, besides its undisputed class for decades, once again impressively represents its origin and rightly confirms that a separate DOC was even created for this wine icon. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid ruby. Initially quite scented, then strangely closed a little in the glass. Subtle tones of cedar, vanilla and dried tobacco, with precision of fresh blackcurrant and a hint of black cherry. There's an underlying graphite and stone/mineral complexity too. Juicy palate - certainly good acidity here - and a comparatively moderate tannic load, both of which work in harmony to structure the wine. The tannins are fine grained, without the somewhat pinched texture I saw in the 2017 vintage, though will nevertheless benefit from a little cellaring to resolve to a silky finesse. At about three-quarter distance there's just a hint of wateriness, but then the delicate flavour does persist to a very good-length finish. This is certainly Sassicaia in the elegant and subtle mould v 2017's more powerful iteration. It would be interesting to evaluate these two side by side in a few years." Jancis Robinson

"Refined and complex, this red is all about finesse and restraint, starting out with floral and black currant flavors that build steadily on the palate, with olive, cedar, tobacco and spice notes adding detail as this lingers on the terrific finish. Needs five to seven years to fully emerge." Wine Spectator

"Star bright raspberry in colour, this has an elegance and a sense of lift right from the start - a beautifully balanced, finessed and classical Sassicaia. The freshly cut and dried herbs of great Italian wines reveals themselves through the slow build up across the palate, along with gentle tobacco and liquorice notes. This is juicy and elegant, showing passion fruit and raspberry with an undertow of complexity. One to savour." Decanter

"Beautiful, serene aromas of sweet berries and wild flowers with light lavender and fresh sage. Really aromatic. A firm, silky red with medium to full body and ultra fine tannins that are polished and beautiful. Lots of blue fruit and blackberries follow through to a beautiful finish. Really tight and polished. Bright acidity. Will be lovely to drink in a few years. The 2017 and 2016 were about power, but the 2018 is about finesse and subtlety." James Suckling

"The 2018 Sassicaia is fabulous. Bright and beautifully poised, the 2018 opens with brilliant aromatics that make a strong first impression. Delicate and light on its feet, the 2018 is a regal wine that is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Sassicaia is the most finessed of Bolgheri's top wines. That is very much the case in 2018 as well. I loved it." Vinous

"This is a classic vintage of an Italian icon now celebrating its 50th vintage. The Tenuta San Guido 2018 Bolgheri Sassicaia lays out a familiar blueprint that borrows from the proven track record of this landmark estate that extends into the hills just beyond the Tyrrhenian shores of Tuscany. This vintage is crystalline and pure in its delivery, and if you are familiar with previous editions, it is impossible to mistake this wine for anything but Sassicaia. The palate is lifted and bright, the finish is polished and long, and the wine skips over any heaviness on the mid-palate. The bouquet is especially intriguing with a very lively plummy fruit element that is enhanced by baker's chocolate, pepper spice, iron ore, caramel and pie crust. There is also a green character that adds positively to the bouquet with aniseed, tea leaf, soya, menthol rub and black olive. The fruit maturity is spot-on with no elements that feel over or underripe. Overall, the 2018 Sassicaia weighs in with a svelte frame and long persistence. Moreover, it is distinguished by the archetypal elegance and pedigree of the classic vintages of the past. This new release gives you much pleasure to await." Robert Parker

"All about radiance and finesse, this iconic Tuscan red has beguiling aromas of cedar, wild red berry, menthol and pipe tobacco that mingle with fragrant blue flowers. Made with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the focused, elegantly structured palate is vibrant and savory, delivering cassis, orange zest, licorice and a hint of coffee framed in taut, polished tannins. Bright acidity keeps it energized and balanced." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Ventaglio" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015
0,75l in OWC

“Ventaglio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015 · 0,75l in OWC

"When making a great wine, the primary goal is to emphasise, perfect and seal in a bottle all the extraordinary characteristics of the area: from the different soils to the microclimate, from the vibrant power of the Mediterranean maquis to the fresh sea breeze." Stanislaus Turnauer (winery owner)

Actually, the single vineyard of just 1 hectare is unique, as it only comprises a small hilltop in the shape of a fan (Italian: ventaglio). The grapes from here have always represented the top of the winery's production and so it was decided to vinify them separately from the 2015 vintage onwards - and the new top wine "Ventaglio" was born.

Due to the curious location and geographical orientation of the vineyard in all directions, there are morning grapes, midday grapes and evening grapes here and they represent the respective site-specific microclimate in an impressive way. Likewise, through the subsequent joint processing, they give their differences in aromatic development, maturity and freshness as a total work of art in this exceptional wine, in which every nuance of the terroir, no matter how small, is expressed correctly and in a balanced manner.

Complex and with a noble body, balanced by an undeniable elegance, Ventaglio appears as the overall expression of Cabernet Franc, which grows particularly well in the Bolgheri area. This first site wine of the Tenuta, symbol of decades of experience in single-varietal winemaking, is vinified only in special vintages in an extremely limited number of bottles.

"Very dense ruby with violet glints. Opens with emphatic spicy notes of cedar and juniper, some tar and liquorice, then lots of dark berry fruit. Very powerful on the palate, opens with dense tannin in many layers, very polished on the final, lots of dark berry fruit in the finish." Falstaff

"This is the inaugural vintage of Tenuta Argentiera's newest monovarietal wine, a Cabernet from a stunning vineyard that is shaped like a fan ("ventaglio" in Italian) positioned around a solitary oak tree that stands tall against a stunning view of blue seas and umbrella trees. The 2015 Ventaglio embraces that wide panorama with a span of aromas and black fruit flavors. Blackberry and plum cede to smoke, campfire ash, crushed mineral and wet river stone. Those delicate earthy tones add pretty framing to the opulent darkness found inside." Robert Parker

"An absolutely beautiful red with crushed-blackberry, mushroom, fresh-herb and chocolate character. It's full-bodied, balanced and creamy with super polished and ripe tannins and a fantastic finish of beautiful fruit. Love the precision and focus. 85% cabernet franc and 15% cabernet sauvignon. Already beautiful, yet will be fantastic in four or five years." James Suckling

“Solosole Pagus Camilla” Vermentino Bolgheri DOC 2016 · 6 Bottles in OWC

Pagus Camilla comes from a small plot of land called "Camilla" near the Sondraia vineyards. Here, the Vermentino grape undergoes a higher concentration during ripening with delicate hints of Riesling. This "project wine", produced in small quantities, is a unique example of the potential of this grape variety in Bolgheri. Pure and beautiful, citrus aroma, salt, minerality and full fruit, balanced, long and with very good ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Vermentino Solosole Pagus Camilla is done in a slightly richer, oilier style than the straight Solosole. Apricot, chamomile and exotic floral notes make a strong first impression. Aging on the lees and a touch of skin contact brings out quite a bit of textural resonance to frame the wine beautifully." Vinous

"The 2016 Bolgheri Vermentino Solosole Pagus Camilla represents a special selection of grapes from the Fosse Camilla vineyard. The wine delivers great structure, bright citrus flavors and a spicy close. It sees four days of skin maceration—it is made almost like a red wine but at lower temperatures. This is a terrific wine that can pair with any seafood dish." Robert Parker

"This is the best vermentino I have ever had from Italy. Wonderful concentration and freshness with sliced, dried mango, pineapple and honey character. Full-bodied, layered and intense. Wonderful length." James Suckling

“L’Alberello” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 (BIO) · 6 Bottles in OWC

L'Alberello is a beautiful Bolgheri Superiore made primarily from Cabernet. Starts fresh and vehement with warm, dark fruit aromas, then opens up further with a bouquet of herbs, coffee and a pinch of pepper. Remarkably polished and juicy on the palate, everything is in balance, silky and very charismatic on the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, sparkling ruby with a slight garnet tongue. Intense and clearly marked nose, lush with elderberries and blueberries, lots of tobacco, some cardamom, shows nice game. Round and lush on the attack, opens with fine-mesh tannin, lots of juicy fruit." Falstaff

"Aromas of spicy blackcurrants and berries. Black cardamom here, too. Full-bodied and layered with compact fruit and very fine-grained tannins. Nice fruit and spice drive through the long finish. This needs a bit of time to come together, but delicious now." James Suckling

"The 2017 Bolgheri Superiore L’Alberello is gracious, silky and wonderfully nuanced. In 2017, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is all class. Crushed rose petal, mint, sweet red berry and cinnamon all grace this mid-weight, beautifully perfumed Bolgheri red." Vinous

"The 2017 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello shows a fine and seamless nature that defies this challenging vintage. The vines are planted according to a special spacing method called "settonce" in Italian. This means that each alberello plant (or head pruned vine) is equidistant to the next. In theory, this brings more light and favors even ripening. Indeed, "even" is the word that first comes to mind. The intensity and the dark fruit aromas are nicely spaced out and level." Robert Parker

"Alberello is the classic Bordeaux blend of Grattamacco in Bolgheri, sourced from a 2ha vineyard planted with bush vines ('alberello'). Clay and earth aromas are joined by intense floral notes of violet. It's a muscular wine, large and powerful, smooth and just chalky on the finish, with an amazing mineral vibrancy." Decanter

Deep ruby red, intense aroma of dark fruit underlaid with delicate toasty aromas. At the palate complex and full-bodied, stoffig, with balsamic notes, perfectly integrated tannins and a finely balanced fruity-spicy finish. An intense wine, which also does not want to be a lightweight and which plays its strength perfectly. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, intense ruby with purple glints. Opens with notes of licorice and dried tomatoes, then lovely currant. Very good presence on the palate, showing tension and fresh fruit, fine-meshed tannin, lots of dark berry juice on the final." Falstaff

"This wine is built on solid foundations and shows a rich vinous footprint. The fruit is black and concentrated, as is to be expected of a wine of this ambition, and it sits with a dark and almost impenetrable appearance in the glass. Orma shows a careful balance between fruit and oak spice, and both are calibrated to achieve high sensorial impact and intensity. If you're looking for the classic Tuscan blended red with sunshine and power, this release is for you." Robert Parker

Fine-meshed tannin, restrained mineral tones and a wonderfully fresh and polished fruit accompany into a remarkable finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2018 shines in a rich ruby red and has a pronounced aromatic complexity, which is a typical characteristic of the vintage. On the nose, aromas of wild berries, blackberries, raspberries and red cherries unfold, accompanied by floral nuances such as wild roses and spicy notes such as pink pepper and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is supple and balanced with a lovely tannic structure and a crisp, tasty final." Olga Fusari (Kellermeisterin Ornellaia)

"Bright, rich garnet. In the nose noble but reserved, a hint of mint, ripe wild berries. Then extremely polished on the palate, excellent use of wood, with pressure, tightly woven, spreads elegantly, punchy, long and compact." Falstaff

"The 2018 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is everything a second wine should be. Open-knit and silky, with impeccable balance and tons of sheer appeal, the 2018 is exquisite today. I would prefer to drink it on the early side in order to capture all of its freshness." Vinous

"The 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that is aged in oak for 15 months. The wine shows depth, concentration and generous fruit weight that adds to the intensity and the textural importance of this abundant, full-bodied expression. Late-season rains threw some challenges at the winemakers of Bolgheri, but this open-knit wine has emerged unscathed." Robert Parker

"Le Serre Nuove's approachable style comes from younger vines or those on lighter, sandier soils, whilst retaining its potential to age in bottle. 2018 brought useful winter dormancy, provocative spring deluges, hot August flushes, and cool, calming harvest nights. It's a sophisticated red with smooth, Ornellaia-esque appeal in a lighter key. Its forward-flowing, velvety fruit is well defined, clear, persistent and easy to engage with. Tannins from both fruit and oak are integrated and in sync." Decanter

"Really beautiful second wine from Ornellaia with blackcurrant and blueberry aromas and flavors. Full body and round, soft tannins that caress the palate." James Suckling

    • "Scrio" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015
MAGNUM

“Scrio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015 · MAGNUM

Scrio - great Tuscan Syrah by Le Macchiole - is a true beauty. The persistent bouquet offers aromas of dark berries and cured meat, warm and balsamic on the palate with great intensity and dynamism, rich in extracts and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich ruby violet. Inviting and intense nose with pronounced notes of plums, blueberries and blood oranges. A dense tannin on the palate, with a good feel, deep, clearly earthy tones, firm pressure in the finish, lots of tobacco." Falstaff

"Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, spice and menthol all flesh out in a wine that possesses notable power. Today, Scrio is mostly a wine of texture and density, while varietal notes are not especially evident. The oak is also quite dominant." Antonio Galloni

"Deep and saturated in both color and fruit, with core flavors of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, this red also offers interwoven notes of earth, vanilla, licorice and black pepper. This is solidly built, yet also polished and balanced, with a long, palate-staining finish." Wine Spectator

"It's worth noting that the Scrio was not made in 2014, as Syrah did not reach the right maturity for the quality Le Macchiole looks for. The 2015 growing season wasn't much easier, with 15 days of extreme heat in July. August brought cooler weather, and so they tried to slow down the ripening process by doing very little green harvest. This vintage is marked by more pepper than fruit, but it's still a beautiful effort, and I see a lot of potential for aging this wine. The 2015 Scrio is made with a more reductive approach overall, and this vintage needs a year or two to open fully. Only 3,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"A stunning syrah; the real McCoy for the variety. The depth of aroma takes your breath away with bark, tea leaves, peppermint, dried rosemary, thyme, sage, pressed violets, cedar, creme de cassis, blackcurrants and lavender. The palate is incredibly tight and yet, profound in its delivery of flavors. Full body, layer upon layer of fruit of every color on the spectrum, pinpoint acidity and a finish that seems endless." “Messorio” Rosso IGT 2011 · MAGNUM in OWC

Very refined, the Merlot Messorio with its great balance and finesse. Deeply dense and full-bodied, when the tannins have relaxed in the coming years, this wine will reach a fascinating perfection. SUPERIORE.DE

"Notes of blackcurrant, leather, tea and macchia; powerful, compact and balanced on the palate, ending with aromas of blackberry confit and herbs, very fresh and surprisingly youthful overall". Vinum

"Rich, deep dark ruby with a slight blue hue. Dense, exuberant nose, rich fruit, plums, blackberries and cassis. On the palate it is polished and lardy, develops with a lot of fine-grained tannin, salty, much rich, dark berry fruit, in the aftertaste a nice play between tobacco and fruit". Falstaff

"The 2011 Messorio takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. Rich and explosive to the core, the 2011 boasts stunning intensity and depth. Today, the 2011 is painfully young and packed with tannin. Even with all of its size, the 2011 retains gorgeous aromatic complexity and tons of nuance. This is a fabulous showing from Le Macchiole." Antonio Galloni

"Amazing aromas of sexy, decadent fruit with blackberry, dark chocolate and cedar. Full body with fine tannins and a long, long finish." James Suckling

"A pure expression of Merlot, the 2011 Messorio is a gorgeous wine that is already drinking at near-optimal performance now. It will be exciting to see where five to ten more years of cellar evolution take it. Cinzia Merli and her vineyard team took care to harvest the early-ripening varietal before autumn heat spikes. In fact, the integrity of the fruit is impeccable and you don’t get any of the jammy notes that are common in this warm vintage. The bouquet is broad and approachable with intense cherry, chocolate and tobacco. Supporting aromas of cola, grilled herb and exotic spice flesh out the finish. The tannins are plump and sweet." "Bright, intense ruby violet. Wonderfully seductive nose, smells of raspberries, blackberries, behind it fine chocolate. Initially a little timid, shows a lot of juicy berry fruit, then sets off and opens in many layers with finely woven tannin, builds up for a long time, in the finale firm and with nice pressure."Falstaff

"I have tasted this wine a number of times and it ranges from 97 to 98 points in my scoring. The subtlety and depth to this is amazing. Aromas of ripe fruit, chili powder, and toasted oak with hints of rosemary follow through to a full body, with very fine tannins and a long finish. Integrated and attractive now, but better in 2014."James Suckling

“Grattamacco 35 anni” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 (BIO) · 6 Bottles in OWC

Sparkling ruby red. Fine, elegant bouquet with fruit aromas, notes of coffee and complex spice aromas. The taste is long-lasting, the acidity in perfect balance with tannin and body. A wine with great personality, suitable for long ageing, but also in its youth already a delight. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, rich ruby red. Appealing and clearly marked nose with notes of ripe dark cherries, blackberries and currants. Very juicy and with good tension on the palate, fine, grippy tannin, well-defined, compact berry fruit, firm pressure on the final." Falstaff

"A beautiful red with berry, spice, light chocolate and clove. Medium-to full-bodied with round tannins and a flavorful finish. Such finesse and beauty for this hot vintage." James Suckling

"The 2017 Grattamacco is a wine of breadth and power. Wild cherry, spice, sage, mint rose petal, cedar, licorice, sweet pipe tobacco and dried herbs all give the 2017 striking aromatic depth to play off its grand scale. The 2017 is rich and deep, and yet retains striking translucence and wonderful detail." Vinous

"Lush and saturated with black currant, plum, cedar, iron, tobacco and toasty oak aromas and flavors, this red is bursting with energy and complexity. It's nicely balanced, with a resonant finish that echoes the flavors and goes on and on. Very youthful and fresh." Wine Spectator

"Congratulations to Grattamacco on the 35th anniversary of this iconic wine. The fruit represents a special selection from over 25 hectares of vines planted in a mix of soils with clay, sandstone, limestone marl and flysch. In fact, the territorial impact on the wine's bouquet is strong with dusty or salty notes that frame dark fruit, dried cherry and toasted spice. This wine shows polished elegance, and that's something that was not easy to achieve in this hot vintage." Robert Parker

"The contribution of Sangiovese in the blend of Grattamacco makes it a distinctive Bolgheri Superiore. If on the nose Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are prevailing with cassis fruit, cedar and kiwi, full of balsamic depth, the indigenous grape pushes the fragrance of the wine with chewy wild fruit flavours. An exceptional expression in the hot vintage. Complex and layered, without any foursquare character, this organic wine is waiting for extra complexity over its liquorice finish." Decanter

“Scrio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2017 · MAGNUM

Scrio - great Tuscan Syrah from Le Macchiole - is a real beauty. The persistent bouquet offers aromas of dark berries and cured meat, warm and balsamic on the palate with great intensity and dynamism, extracted and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Scrio, Le Macchiole’s Syrah, is fabulous. As always, Scrio is more a wine of the estate than a varietal expression of Syrah. That is obvious. Even so, the wine’s density, persistence and overall complexity make it compelling. Time in the glass brings out hints of cedar, smoke, sweet pipe tobacco and rose petal to play off a core of vibrant red Syrah fruit. I would give the 2017 a few years for the aromatics to develop. This is very nicely done. Sadly, the year required severe selection that reduced production by around 40%." Vinous

"The Le Macchiole 2017 Scrio is a pure expression of Syrah that shows more similarities to the variety when grown in France than it does California, Australia or even the rest of Tuscany for that matter. Instead of the peppery charred meat or barbecued aromas you often get in New World Syrah, this wine points to blackberry, some black olive, rum cake, crème de cassis or chocolate-covered cherries. Although the wine is varietally pure, it doesn't really scream Syrah in any sort of obvious or banal manner. The tannins are more gripping in this hot vintage, and the wine spreads over the palate with a creamy, almost waxy texture that is enduring and deep." Robert Parker

"Intense aromas of blackcurrants, spices and black licorice with some lavender and rosemary. It’s full-bodied and layered with chewy, polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Black pepper comes through. It’s tensioned and structured. Nicely proportioned." James Suckling

    • "Messorio" Rosso IGT 2017
MAGNUM

“Messorio” Rosso IGT 2017 · MAGNUM

Messorio has been one of Italy's best and rarest Merlots for over a decade. Soft, rich, elegant, refined and never overdone. On the nose, ripe fruit, coffee, graphite and French oak. Structured and balanced, Messorio fascinates the international wine world every year with a clarity and length that is second to none. SUPERIORE.DE

"A beam of black cherry and blackberry permeates this red, accented by wild rosemary, thyme, iron and oak spice. Beautifully balanced and graceful, this should begin to hit its stride in two to three years, once the oak is absorbed." Wine Spectator

"Messorio is a wine that beautifully reflects the characteristics of the vintage and is a very accurate measuring stick of how any single vintage will eventually perform both in terms of near-term accessibility and long-term cellar aging. That said, the Le Macchiole 2017 Messorio plays its strongest cards in terms of mouthfeel and texture, revealing a robust structure and firmly integrated tannins that come from both the richly concentrated fruit and the careful use of oak. The wine shows a heavy center of gravity and a solid base of dark fruit that is enhanced by caramel, brown sugar, spice and creamy blackberry preserves. It does offer immediate appeal, but I'd wait a few more years to give this 2017 Messorio more time to flesh out and evolve." Robert Parker

"The 2017 Messorio is classy and polished to the core. It is also incredibly young and not at all forthcoming. Messorio is a wine that needs a surprising amount of time in bottle to truly shine. I expect that will be the case here as well. Today, the 2017 is all about fruit and density. Time in the cellar should allow for its aromatics to emerge more fully. Overall, though, this is a fairly restrained style, in keeping with the showing of 2017 Bolgheri reds more broadly. All the elements come together so gracefully in this striking wine." Vinous

"This wine shows beautiful clarity and class on the nose with roses, tar, currants, green and black olives and plums. It's exceptionally fine-tannined with such polish and finesse. So sophisticated and intense for this vintage. Long, chewy finish, yet this is mouth-filling and caressing." James Suckling

“Ornellaia” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2014 · MAGNUM in OWC

Complex, racy and delicate floral scent of fully ripe cherries and black berries with noble, optimally integrated wood aromas. The tremendously harmonious taste reveals an impeccable fruit, dense, juicy and powerful, with melt, present yet soft tannins and ends in a decidedly elegant finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The year 2014 of Ornellaia has been, since we can remember, one of the most labour-intensive. Nevertheless, we were able to produce very attractive wines of high quality. The late ripening of the grapes has allowed the fruit to fully develop its vitality and freshness. What surprises you above all is the high quality of the tannin on the palate: soft, refined and without edges. This year represents the core of the winery's philosophy, „L‘ Essenza“ of Ornellaia: its natural style, the outstanding quality of its terroir and the skill of those who work in the vineyards and in the cellar". Axel Heinz, Director

"A rich, deep, dark ruby. Opened on the nose with intense toasted notes of dark chocolate and roasted hazelnuts, followed by dark berry fruit, blackcurrant and elderberry. On the palate beautiful spice notes, much ripe, dark berry fruit, opens with present, gripping tannin, builds up well." Falstaff

"To be released in May 2017, the 2014 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia reverts to a style and personality that we have not seen in a long while. The wine shows a tight, silky and determined approach that reminds us of the Ornellaias made under the estate's previous ownership with the Marchese Lodovico Antinori in the mid-1990s. More than anything else, this has to do with the very unique characteristics of the 2014 growing season. The wine opens to a beautifully saturated and dark appearance. Thanks to the advanced age of the vines and their extensive root systems, fruit quality was well preserved despite the cool summer and late harvest. The wine shows sweet fruit nuances with blackberry and dark currant. Spice, leather and tobacco fill in the rear. The finish reveals just enough of that acidic prickle to assure an easy ten or fifteen year drinking window." Robert Parker

"A solid and structured red with tile, dark berry and black tea character and some cloves, too. Full body, tannic and rich. Needs time to soften. Well done for a 2014. Ornellaia shows its pedigree here." James Suckling

    • "Marianova" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016
3 Bottles in OWC

“Marianova” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016 · 3 Bottles in OWC

This is the second vintage of the currently only Bolgheri Superiore, which is produced apart from the classic French Bordeaux grape varieties. It consists of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Syrah. Two grape varieties that the Sattas have studied for several decades and whose quality has convinced us and the international critics for many years. Marianova combines great aromatic breadth with a gigantic drinking pleasure and at the same time underlines the great individuality of the winery like no other wine.

Bright ruby red. In the nose a potpourri of spicy notes: spicy the Syrah and crisp the Sangiovese. Small red ripe berries and some blackberry essence mix with moist soil, smoke, tree bark and tar. This exceptional wine is carried by a bouquet of dark fruits and a fresh acidity, its impressive finish is infinitely long and powerful. SUPERIORE.DE

"3250 bottles are pressed by this Sangiovese and Syrah selection in its second vintage: an enchanting bouquet of cherries and spices; a smooth course with very well integrated powerful tannins and invigorating acidity, shows elegance until the final. Vinum

"Brilliant ruby violet with a slightly bright edge. A lot of present fruit, like mulberries and blueberries, in addition dark cherries, some spicy macchia smoke. A dense tannin with a sweet core, develops for a long time with a lot of pressure, tobacco in the final." Falstaff

"Marianova is the first Bolgheri Superiore to be made without any Bordeaux varietals. Instead it's a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Sangiovese, the idea of Michele Satta’s son Giacomo, first produced in 2015. Ruby red and restrained, it's focussed on vibrant raspberry and cherry aromas layered with indian spice notes and a touch of leathery character. It shows a firm yet ripe tannic structure with chewy acidity and a great savoury finish of toasted notes and prunes." Decanter

"Aromas of currants, crushed berries and walnuts, as well as chocolate. Full body, juicy tannins and beautiful fruit at the end. Big wine that needs time to soften. A blend of sangiovese and syrah." James Suckling

"On first nose, the 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Marianova (equal parts Syrah and Sangiovese) shows savory and barbecue-like aromas with teriyaki sauce and hickory smoke followed by plummy fruit and blackberry preserves. There is a note of sweetness with lots of spice, leather and tobacco at the edges. Of Michele Satta's releases, this wine is the most unlike him in that it is the most contemporary and enriched. This is the second vintage of Marianova (the winery’s latest creation) to be released." Robert Parker

“Ornellaia” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 · MAGNUM in OWC

Dense and dark with a bright ruby red edge. In the bouquet liquorice, roasted cereals, vanilla and black berries. In the drink the tight tannin structure paired with fine fruit sweetness and very harmonious acid wire is impressive. SUPERIORE.DE

"Ornellaia 2017 interprets the particularly warm and sunny year masterfully. The intense and dark colour heralds a wine of beautiful concentration. Rich and complex on the nose, it releases aromas of ripe berry fruits, accompanied by notes of sweet tobacco and vanilla. The palate reveals an Ornellaia of great balance, a combination of persistence and pleasant freshness". Olga Fusari (Kellermeisterin Ornellaia)

"2017 can only be described as an extreme vintage in which sun and heat played a decisive role. That's why I decided to name the character of Ornellaia 2017 "Radiant". The wine is dominated by notes of dark berries and liquorice, underpinned by velvety tannins typical of hot vintages. At the same time, excellent smoothness and acidity give the wine a splendid Mediterranean character". Axel Heinz (Direktor Ornellaia)

"Coming from one of the hottest vintages, this vintage shows a deep dark colour. In the nose with dark fruits like cassis and also blackberry. Somewhat smoky. Presents itself on the palate with tart and still present tannins. The tart notes are carried by a fresh and demanding acidity with juicy, strong black cherry fruit. Long finish." Vinum

"Though well-oaked, this features ample black cherry, plum and loam flavors to match the vanilla and sweet spice elements. Harmonious and accessible at this young stage, but will be better in a few years once the components harmonize. Vibrant and long." Wine Spectator

"A big, rich wine for the vintage, yet poised and lively with firm, chewy tannins that give form and intensity to the wine. It shows loads of blackberry, blackcurrant and walnut flavors. Ripe yet polished tannins. Give this three or four years to come together." James Suckling

"This vintage of Ornellaia is called Solare and represents the 12th edition in the estate's Vendemmia d'Artista series featuring artwork by Tomás Saraceno. His beautiful art depicts a radiant sun halo and is intended as a symbol of sustainability. That theme of sunshine and warmth is particularly well suited to a vintage such as this. The Ornellaia 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is generous and fruit-forward with dense richness and concentration all driven by the smaller and more compact berry size that characterizes this dry, hot growing season. Black and purple fruits segue to spice, tobacco, leather and some of those beautiful Mediterranean notes of black olive and wild sage. These various moving pieces work together in perfect harmony. The tannins are beautifully managed here. If you consider the more astringent and rougher approach of the mid-tier Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, this wine shows a whole other level of magnificent tannic management that could not have been easy given the diminutive berry size. This vintage sees a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard soils are characterized by reddish sand with calcareous rock. The wine is fermented in both stainless steel and cement and is transferred over to barrique to finish malolactic fermentation." Robert Parker

"A stunning wine, the 2017 Ornellaia offers a captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key. Young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in August for the first time ever. In the glass, the 2017 offers up an enticing mélange of mocha, cedar, tobacco and licorice, with soft curves that add to its sensuality and allure. The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb!" Vinous

    • "Ornellaia" Bianco Toscana IGT 2018
MAGNUM in OWC

“Ornellaia” Bianco Toscana IGT 2018 · MAGNUM in OWC

Ornellaia Bianco is a cuvée of mainly Sauvignon Bianco from three selected, small vineyards of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. It ferments on the lees for 10 months, which gives it freshness, precision and a fine citrus note. Delicate golden yellow. A cornucopia of bright fruits on the nose, along with wonderful mint and citrus notes. Complex, lush and multi-layered on the palate. One of the very great white wines of Italy, completely in the style of the house. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Ornellaia Bianco is the fruit of the longest harvest Sauvignon Blanc grapes ever at Ornellaia. The harvest began shortly after mid-August and ended on 12 September, when the last Sauvignon Blanc grapes were brought into the cellar. This wine presents itself in an intense straw yellow and unfolds aromas of exotic fruits on the nose, accompanied by delicate nuances of finely toasted vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied, dense, with rich fruit, which is perfectly harmonised by a hearty acidity." Olga Fusari (Kellermeisterin Ornellaia)

"The 2018 Ornellaia Bianco is a powerful, dense wine. Orchard fruit, chamomile, saline notes and dried flowers open in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A rich white, the 2018 Bianco possesses tremendous weight, but it is also very much closed in on itself. I am intrigued to see how the 2018 ages." Vinous

"This vintage shows the usual understated or slightly reserved character that we've seen in past editions. With a little prodding and swirling, the bouquet opens gradually to reveal a pretty assortment of d'Anjou pear, white peach, honeysuckle and toasted almond. The wine is fermented in oak, but malolactic fermentation does not occur. There are pretty dustings of saffron and crushed stone that hint at the evolution and elegance to come with extra time in the bottle." Robert Parker

“Camarcanda” Bolgheri DOC 2013 · 6 Bottles in OWC

Camarcanda is a rich Bolgheri Rosso with a dark bouquet of black fruits, espresso, chocolate, liquorice and tar. On the palate it is extremely full-bodied, with excellent depth, dense structure and firm body. Opulent and long, this wine already today shows a wide range of its personality. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda shows the pedigree of the vintage and the importance this top shelf wine deserves. This is an exceptional blend of Merlot with Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc that is challenging to taste next to the 2014 Magari, which is so radically different. Camarcanda reveals Gaja's signature touch with full and generous fruit layers that are backed by spice, leather, tobacco and lovely succulence. The wine is integrated and smooth with long-lasting favors and beautiful tannin management. Despite its heft, the wine is elegant and silky through and through." Robert Parker

"Very Bordeaux-like, this red offers plum, cherry, coffee, green olive and spice aromas and flavors. Taut and dense, with a long, fresh finish that exudes cedar, sandalwood and green olive notes." Wine Spectator

“Magari” Rosso Bolgheri DOC 2016 · METHUSALEM 6 Liters in OWC

Magari is vinified from 50 percent Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in equal parts. It presents itself fresh and juicy, with strong vegetal accents and great depth. Simply delicious! SUPERIORE.DE

"Gaja started to make wine in Bolgheri in 2000. Magari changed in blend in 2014, replacing the difficult Merlot in this warm climate with Petit Verdot which ripens better here than in Bordeaux. The 2016 is youthful in colour, full of leafy Cabernet Franc notes. It has firm, extracted tannins and is not without great tension on the palate. It needs time to develop in finesse and complexity, having now the exuberance of youth." Decanter

"The 2016 Magari is a dark, powerful wine. In most vintages, Magari is a wine of Tuscan charm, but powerful tannins give the 2016 a somewhat compact feel. There is plenty of depth to the black fruit, mocha, new leather and spice flavors, but the 2016 is clearly very young. There is not much Bolgheri charm in the early going. The 2016 is going to need at least a few years in bottle to come together." VINOUS

"A very fresh nose with tons of dark fruit, such as brambleberries, blueberries and dark cherries, as well as vanilla, dried herbs and eucalyptus. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a tight finish." James Suckling

"Black currant and black cherry fruit mingles with mint, olive, graphite and tobacco notes in this red. Elegant, with ample density and bright acidity, ending in a firm, fruit-, mineral- and herb-tinged aftertaste. Well-proportioned and classy." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Magari produces an expressive and opulent red wine, with great acidity and definition. The wine is firm and tightly wound, with secondary complexity that expresses itself in terms of tar, leather and spice. The tannins are supple and soft." Robert Parker
