If only it were true. This Italian idiom, full of longing and hope, lends its name to Angelo Gaja's Tuscan masterpiece, *Magari*, and tells the story of a dream that became reality. When the Piedmontese patriarch first explored the Maremma coast in the 1990s, he saw the potential for something extraordinary in the rolling hills of Bolgheri. It took eighteen rounds of negotiations to acquire the Ca' Marcanda estate – "the house of endless negotiations", as it has been known ever since.

The three key varieties of this exceptional Bordeaux blend now thrive on the fertile "terre brune" – the loam-rich brown soils far from the coast. Cabernet Franc makes up 60% of the blend, lending the wine its characteristic elegance and freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up 30% of the blend, contributing structure and depth, whilst 10% Petit Verdot provides the spicy complexity that gives Magari its unmistakable character.

Blackcurrants and ripe plums blend with eucalyptus and lavender, whilst hints of graphite and fine tobacco reveal the Bordeaux origins of the grape varieties. On the palate, a velvety texture of remarkable finesse unfolds – never heavy, always underpinned by lively acidity, which lends the wine that tension that characterises great Maremma wines.
