The address is Castellina Marittima, twenty kilometres north of Bolgheri – just outside the DOC boundary, which determines what name a wine is permitted to bear. A bureaucratic formality that makes no difference in substance: 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyards on fossil-rich soils composed of minerals, iron ore, shell limestone and alluvial sand, facing the sea, with significant day-night temperature fluctuations – these are the conditions for which Bolgheri is famous.

The estate is the brainchild of two wine enthusiasts: the Austrian journalist Stephan Klasmann and the Italian Oenologist Andrea di Maio, who previously worked as a winemaker at Antinori's Guado al Tasso and Isola e Olena's Cepparello. Kappa is their flagship wine – a Bordeaux-inspired cuvée made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, which is bottled after fourteen months' barrel ageing, with an annual production of around 18,000 bottles.

2021 brings exceptional depth to the Kappa. The bouquet features dark berries, blackcurrant, blackberry and Mediterranean herbs – with a hint of tobacco in the background. On the palate, it is dense and structured, with precise, well-integrated tannins, lively freshness and a long, powerful finish that clearly reflects the minerality of the soil.
