In 1944 Mario Incisa della Rochetta planted a plant near the town of Bolgheri in Tuscany, ten kilometres from the coast, on a rocky slope of Cabernet Sauvignon called 'Castiglioncello'. The wine got the name 'Sassicaia' after the many stones (Sassi) in the vineyard. The first 'Sassicaia' was launched in 1968, marking the beginning of the slow triumph of the red wine, which at the time was untypical of Italy and was a pure variety. For many years it could only be classified as VdT (table wine) because the grape variety was not permitted here. It was not until 1994 that a Rosso was approved in the Bolgheri DOC, to which this wine (in addition to Ornellaia) contributed significantly. The 'Sassicaia' has even within this DOC its own subrange Bolgheri Sassicaia (the actually correct and complete name). Today, this intense ruby red wine is considered to be one of the very best in Italy and at least as good as a Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino or Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The world-famous vineyard is now managed by the Niccolò Incisa della Rocchetta family. The label of the Sassicaia was designed according to the old seal of the family. For decades, the centuries-old history has led to a unique wine. SUPERIORE.DE
