The Castellina in Chianti UGA is located in the western heart of the appellation, a municipality on a ridge between the Arbia and Elsa valleys, with soils of silt, clay and sandstone that give the Sangiovese fullness and warmth. The slopes are sunny and the microclimate is warm. Anyone who works in Castellina knows that Sangiovese matures differently here than elsewhere in Chianti Classico. Antinori acquired the Buiano estate in 2017 – a relatively recent decision within the long-term Gran Selezione project, which comprises four individual vineyards from four different UGAs. No other Chianti Classico estate has such a broad territorial representation. Buiano is the most powerful, full-bodied expression of these four. 100% Sangiovese, 5,000 to 6,000 bottles.

“Palafreno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021 (BIO)
The Palafreno was no warhorse. In the parades and processions of the Middle Ages, it carried the knight into the public eye – with nobility and dignity. Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni chose this name for his Merlot because it describes exactly what he hoped for from this grape variety: not power for power’s sake, but character with poise. Querciabella was founded in 1974 by Sebastiano’s father Giuseppe in Greve in Chianti. Organically farmed since 1988, long since biodynamic, and vinified using vegan methods – the estate articulated its commitment to integrity earlier than most others. The Palafreno is Sebastiano’s personal project: pure Merlot, from the finest vines in Ruffoli, the Cipresso and Marrone plots, on galestro-rich soil amidst olive groves and oak forests. Produced not to serve the market, but to demonstrate what Merlot is capable of in the heart of Chianti Classico when taken seriously.

Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, the 37th generation of a family that has lived in Gaiole in Chianti since the Lombard era, dedicates this wine to an ancestor of the 10th century: Ridolfo, son of Geremia, founder of the Firidolfi branch. A wine as a family memory – and an experiment. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Pugnitello. Pugnitello, an indigenous Tuscan variety that almost disappeared from the vineyards, grows on the chalky-clay hills of Gaiole, certified organic, between 340 and 510 metres. In the blend, it gives wild cherry fruit, pepper and rusticity – characteristics, which the Cabernet frames with linearity and fine herbal depth. Hand-picked, wild yeasts, 24 months in Allier barriques and tonneau, 36 months bottle ageing. Exclusively in magnum, hand-numbered.

The name refers to the depths of the family history: Ridolfo, son of Geremia, progenitor of the Firidolfi branch, lived in the 10th century. Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, the 37th generation, still cultivates the same hills in Gaiole in Chianti today – and distils in this wine the most intimate expression of its terroir. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Pugnitello: internationality and tradition in equal parts. The Pugnitello, autochthonous and almost extinct, grows here organically certified on chalky-clay soils between 340 and 510 metres. It gives wild fruit, pepper and mineral depth. The Cabernet gives linearity and silky tannin. Hand-picked in three phases, fermentation in upright wooden tanks with wild yeasts, 24 months in Allier barriques and tonneau, 36 months bottle ageing. Magnum, hand-numbered, only in outstanding vintages.

In 2001, Luca Sanjust unceremoniously renamed his Vinsanto del Chianti "San Petrolo Passito Bianco", as he was no longer willing to put up with the uncompromising and incomprehensible views of the consortium on the specification of a Vin Santo del Chianti Classico. For some of the analytical values (sugar, acidity, alcohol content) of his exceptional dessert wine did not correspond to the rigid specifications of the regulations, which, however, did not detract from the quality of his wine. There are just 600 bottles of each vintage, but they are quite something.

The Riecine vineyard in Gaiole in Chianti has a history dating back to the 11th century. Since 2006, La Gioia has been a pure Sangiovese, a decision that perfectly reflects the philosophy of the estate: absolute concentration on the noblest of all Tuscan grape varieties.

As a result of extensive soil research, Francesco Ricasoli was able to identify three microlocations, which will be vinified separately from the 2015 vintage onwards. The range of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione now includes, in addition to the famous Castello di Brolio, three cru sites (Colledilà, Roncicone and Ceniprimo), all of which are 100% planted with Sangiovese. They differ in structure and taste in close correspondence with their terroir and impressively demonstrate the complexity of the Chanti Classico region.

Uva dei Colombi – the grape of the doves. A name like a poem, for a wine that epitomises everything that Piaggia stands for. And what Carmignano can be when no compromises are made. The grapes come from the founding vineyard: the plot in Poggio a Caiano that Mauro Vannucci planted in 1972 when he built his house here and saw the slopes above. He was convinced that this exposure, this soil – clay and galestro, permeable and calcareous – was destined for great wines. Fifty years later, the vines prove him right. 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot. Each variety is harvested separately, fermented separately – with natural yeasts, eighteen to twenty-eight days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation already takes place in the barriques: one hundred per cent new French oak, for thirty-six months. Then a further twelve months of bottle ageing before the wine leaves the winery. Only around a thousand bottles are produced in each vintage.
