The name is a tribute – a deliberate homage to Bâtard-Montrachet, the legendary white wine Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune. Querciabella did not choose it out of arrogance, but out of conviction: because the steep Galestro slopes of Ruffoli, 350 to 600 metres above Greve in Chianti, possess the terroir to produce white wines with Burgundian depth and longevity.

Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco – but not just any Pinot Bianco. In 2008, Querciabella planted 19 rows of the so-called "Gouges clone": a spontaneous mutation of Pinot Noir, discovered in the 1940s by Henri Gouges at the Premier Cru vineyard La Perrière in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The vines bear exclusively white grapes – and lend the Batàr a silky, spicy texture that no other clone can match. The winemaking is craftsmanship in the truest sense: micro-vinification on a plot-by-plot basis, fermentation in French barriques, and nine months on the lees. Only when every component has reached its optimum point of maturity is the final blend created through extensive tasting. Further bottle ageing takes place before release. Since 2010, there has been less bâtonnage and a lower proportion of new oak – the result is greater freshness, more terroir and greater complexity.

Golden yellow with green highlights. On the nose, lemon zest, mandarin and white flowers, with creamy undertones, minerality and a hint of saltiness. Silky and brooding on the palate, with ripe pear, almond, saffron, a hint of ginger – and a freshness that perfectly supports the opulent 14% alcohol base.
