Marilisa and Franco Allegrini dedicated this single-varietal Cabernet Franc from their own vineyards on Via Bolgherese to their eldest brother Walter, who died in 2003. The 2015 vintage marked the beginning of an even more radical focus on the terroir and the quality of the grapes. Since then, a third fewer bottles have been filled each year, resulting in a Bolgheri Superiore from their own grapes from the core zone of Bolgheri, which can hardly be surpassed in elegance and character. The pure Merlot San Walfredo presents itself in an intense cherry red colour. 2017 was the very first vintage of Massetino. It was launched in 2019, exactly 30 years after the first Massetino vintage. The newly designed wine cellar by Italian architects Zito & Mori was also inaugurated in 2019. Massetino already shows a self-confident personality, which is not surprising as he shares the same pedigree with Masseto. The high quality potential, which was already evident when tasting the grapes before the harvest, is fully expressed in the quality profile of Massetino 2021. A solid, crisp wine with a bright colour. Its flavours are memorable thanks to their richness and long finish. Lively, young tannins that are constantly evolving give the wine consistency and persistence on the palate. Massetino 2021 proves to be just as powerful as the vintage from which it comes. The vines for Masseto are on a 6.63 hectare vineyard site belonging to Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. Located at an altitude of 120m, the soil consists of sand, gravel and clay. It ensures that the precipitation does not seep through but is stored. Bolgheri often suffers from drought in summer. Masseto 2015 wanders impressively between power and elegance. It presents a balance and just the right amount of integration to promise a long and healthy future. It is densely woven, has a beautiful texture and creaminess that makes it sheerly seductive. "There are not many purely varietal Merlots of this class in the world, although it should not be forgotten that the Masseto is characterised by a Mediterranean climate. It is softer, juicier, sweeter than the wines from Pomerol, which grow in the Atlantic-continental climate and have a different style. The 2015 could go down in the annals of Masseto: a dark, crazy complex wine, still in barrel and masked by toasty, toasty notes.
