The vineyard's younger generation is spread across three levels. At the top, at around 120 metres, the vines are rooted in loose clay mixed with sand and pebbles; in the middle, on Pliocene clay on slopes with a ten% gradient, which imparts strength and a tannic structure; and right at the bottom, on less clayey soil, which contributes body and softness. Reflected light and cool breezes come from the sea, slowing down ripening and preserving acidity. Since the 2017 vintage, these younger vines have been used to produce the Massetino, and each small plot is harvested separately by hand, with the grapes transported in 15-kilo crates. Each plot ferments separately, spontaneously with its own yeasts, in concrete tanks; malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, half of which are new. The wine remains there for twelve months, is then blended from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, and matures for a further three months in wood before being bottled.

A brilliant red with great luminosity. The bouquet is persistent and full-bodied, with notes of ripe plum and sweet cherry, complemented by a hint of dark chocolate. "A deep, dark, elegant ruby red. On the nose, it offers aromas of dried cherry tomatoes, ripe plums, heart cherries, dark chocolate, clay and candle wax, with a finish reminiscent of rosehip tea. On the palate, it is intensely dark-fruity and richly spiced, displaying plenty of body and volume; slightly piquant, with a hint of toasty notes on the finish, and a long, lingering aftertaste." "The 2024 Massetino is one of the most refined Massetinos I have tasted since this wine was introduced in the 2017 vintage. Aromatic and light on its feet, the 2024 is impossible to resist, even though it is, of course, very young. A rush of dark-toned fruit, licorice, chocolate, lavender and dried herbs builds nicely in the glass. Soft, polished tannins wrap it all up in style. The year was marked by considerable rain in winter and spring. Elevated temperatures from the end of June to mid-August set up an early harvest. Importantly, rain in September rehydrated the grapes and shifted the balance in the wines away from opulence and towards freshness. A light hand in extractions is very much felt here. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc." Vinous

"Massetino is more than a typical second wine; for a start, volumes are even lower than the grand vin, Masseto, while Massetino has also always incorporated a portion of the estate's excellent Cabernet Franc. This 2024 is super-fresh in personality, with crunchy, creamy black cherry and blackberry at the core allied to a grippy woody frame and fine, silky tannins.
