Since 1997, Le Serre Nuove has held the title of Ornellaia's "second wine" – a designation that has long since ceased to be underestimated in Bolgheri. It is produced mainly from the estate's younger vineyards, with the same care and attention to detail as that applied to the more famous flagship wine. Those who taste Le Serre Nuove often recognise the hallmarks of the upcoming great vintage even before it is released.

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are grown on the reddish, sandy-clay soils of the estate, near the Tuscan coast. The grapes are hand-harvested, sorted by variety, between the end of August and the first half of October, as soon as each variety has reached full phenolic ripeness. After gentle pressing, each variety ferments separately in stainless steel tanks at 26 to 30°C, with 10 to 15 days' contact with the skins. Malolactic fermentation takes place partly in steel and partly in barriques. After the first twelve months in wood, the wines are blended, followed by a further three months' ageing – a total of fifteen months in barriques, a quarter of which are new – before the wine is left to rest in the bottle for half a year.

A deep, youthful ruby red. The bouquet offers spicy notes of clove and toasted wood, accompanied by subtle dark fruit, redcurrant and a hint of cocoa. On the palate, it is firm and full of vigour, with fine-grained, firm tannins that persist throughout, and a hearty, spicy, concentrated finish. SUPERIORE.DE

The year was characterised by significant rainfall in winter and spring. Higher temperatures from late June to mid-August led to an early harvest.
