The Biserno project began in 2001 with an intuition: Piero and Lodovico Antinori, their nephew Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi and Umberto Mannoni recognised the potential of the hills north of Bolgheri. For more than twenty years, they worked on a parcel-by-parcel basis, defining three independent tenutes – biserno, Campo di Sasso and Collemezzano – and understood the area ever more deeply. Today, Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi runs the estate alone. Colle Mezzano is his most personal wine.

Tenuta di Collemezzano is located ten kilometres north of Bibbona, at 80 to 120 metres, exposed to the south-west with a sea view – the most recent acquisition, added in 2019. The vines were planted in the 1990s: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon on clayey-sandy soil with a high proportion of skeletal material consisting of small alluvial pebbles and excellent drainage capacity. A different terroir to Biserno, a different terroir to Campo di Sasso – with its own mineral rigour and characteristic proximity to the sea. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, 3 to 4 weeks of maceration, then 12 to 16 months in French oak barriques, partly new. At least a further 12 months in the bottle.

Deep ruby red with violet reflections. Red fruit, graphite, sweet spices, balsamic and mineral nuances on the nose – complex, multi-layered. Structured and enveloping on the palate, with velvety tannins, long persistence and a characteristic salty note on the finish. Hidden power and elegance in perfect balance. Great ageing potential.
