Prosecco Superiore Rive di Col San Martino grows on the equally named steep slopes of Valdobbiadene. The second top product from the small family winery is Castè Extra Dry, which comes from the old steep slopes on the castle hill and thus got its name. Brilliant pale yellow in colour, with a bouquet of white fruit, a delicate hint of yeast, lemon and herbs. 2021 was a year with an ideal vegetation balance in Abruzzo: cool springs, a sunny but not overheated summer and healthy, late-picked grapes. This organic Riserva is traditionally vinified and matures for around 18 months in large wooden barrels and barriques. Deep ruby colour with a light purple hue in the glass. Juicy black cherry, blackcurrant, dried herbs, liquorice and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose. On the palate, it is denser and more structured than the previous vintage - with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, spicy finish. A Riserva with a clear line and great inner balance. Volpaia – the foxhole. High above Radda in Chianti, at 450 to 650 metres above sea level, the vineyards of Castello di Volpaia are located on the highest slopes of the appellation. The altitude shapes the character: sandstone soils, cool nights and long ripening periods give the Sangiovese (supplemented by 10% Merlot) a freshness and elegance that would be hard to achieve in warmer locations. The result: juicy wild strawberries and wild cherries, accompanied by the scent of violets and spices. Nerello Mascalese is known as the protagonist of the elegant Etna red wines – but as a rosato, this noble grape variety has a fascination all of its own. Benanti vinifies it as a single variety from the south-eastern slope of the volcano, where the vines are rooted in mineral-rich volcanic sands at an altitude of 500 to 700 metres. The grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of October from vines on trellises that are on average 25 years old. After twelve hours of cold maceration, the grapes are gently pressed; only 65% of the must is transferred to the stainless steel tank. Ten days of fermentation at a controlled temperature with the winery's own Etna yeast, followed by maturation on the fine lees and two to three months of rest in the bottle.

Lugana as a sparkling wine? The idea sounds unusual, but Sergio Zenato has been pursuing it since the winery was founded in the 1960s. He recognised early on that Trebbiano di Lugana, with its fine acidity and aromatic purity, was ideal for traditional bottle fermentation. Hand-picked in mid-September, gentle whole-cluster pressing, fermentation with natural yeasts at 16°C in stainless steel. This is followed by the decisive step: the second fermentation in the bottle according to the Metodo Classico – the same method used in Champagne. The Spumante sur lie matures for a full 24 months before remuage and dégorgement release the fine flavours.

Where the Lombards once built their fortress and Frederick II held court, Marco Ricasoli Firidolfi now cultivates his vines – a descendant of Bettino Ricasoli, who invented the Chianti formula in the 19th century. Monti in Chianti, situated at an altitude of 340 to 510 metres, is considered one of the best vineyards in the entire region. Limestone soils, organic farming and three-phase manual harvesting form the basis for this classic Chianti: 90% Sangiovese, supplemented by Canaiolo from our own selection. Matured for twelve months in Allier oak, bottled unfiltered.

La Caduta epitomises an exception to the rule – here Caparzo shows that a Rosso di Montalcino can be far more than just the "little brother" of Brunello. The winery has been vinifying grapes from this exceptional single vineyard separately since 1983, creating a cru that has set new standards for the Rosso category. La Caduta is not just a geographical name, but a statement: this wine proves that exceptional terroir can also produce wines of remarkable depth and complexity in the younger DOC category. The La Caduta vineyard stretches over 7.5 hectares in the western zone of Montalcino at an altitude of 300 metres – the highest site in the Caparzo portfolio. The terroir is characterised by slate-sandy soil with a loose structure and a high proportion of skeleton, which is fundamentally different from the other Caparzo sites. This geological peculiarity, combined with the exposed southern exposure, creates a unique microclimate that lends the Sangiovese a special minerality and freshness that would be intensified in classic Brunello maturation.

Lagrein is the great autochthonous red wine variety of South Tyrol – and at Tiefenbrunner it finds ideal conditions. The grapes come from the slopes of Entiklar and Margreider Leiten, at an altitude of 220 to 350 metres, where limestone gravel soils from moraine deposits provide mineral depth. Some of the vines were planted back in 1967 – experience you can taste. Maceration in stainless steel is followed by malolactic fermentation, after which the wine matures for eight months in large and small wooden barrels. The result: a Lagrein that combines power with elegance.

Pietracupa's Fiano 2020 is a prime example of how precise and complex this grape variety from the Irpinia highlands can be. The vines grow on limestone and clay-rich soils around Montefredane, where cool nights and a long growing season ensure fine flavours and elegant structure. 2020 brought balanced conditions that harmoniously combined freshness and ripeness. Medium straw yellow with golden reflections. The bouquet is multi-layered: ripe apricot, candied lemon, hazelnut, white flowers and a hint of honey, underpinned by mineral notes. Dense yet straightforward on the palate, with juicy acidity, fine texture and a long, slightly salty finish.
