La Caduta epitomises an exception to the rule – here Caparzo shows that a Rosso di Montalcino can be far more than just the "little brother" of Brunello. The winery has been vinifying grapes from this exceptional single vineyard separately since 1983, creating a cru that has set new standards for the Rosso category. La Caduta is not just a geographical name, but a statement: this wine proves that exceptional terroir can also produce wines of remarkable depth and complexity in the younger DOC category. The La Caduta vineyard stretches over 7.5 hectares in the western zone of Montalcino at an altitude of 300 metres – the highest site in the Caparzo portfolio. The terroir is characterised by slate-sandy soil with a loose structure and a high proportion of skeleton, which is fundamentally different from the other Caparzo sites. This geological peculiarity, combined with the exposed southern exposure, creates a unique microclimate that lends the Sangiovese a special minerality and freshness that would be intensified in classic Brunello maturation.
What distinguishes La Caduta from the regular Rosso di Montalcino is not only its origin from a specific parcel, but also the meticulous selection in the vineyard. While the normal Rosso is blended from various northern and southern vineyards to ensure consistency, La Caduta represents the pure expression of a single, exceptional terroir. The hand-picked grapes are subjected to strict field selection to ensure that only perfectly ripe and flawless grapes are harvested.
La Caduta is an elegant, ruby-red wine with violet reflections and reveals the characteristic complexity of its privileged origin on the nose. Aromas of wild berries, violets and dark spices blend with subtle notes of vanilla and tobacco. On the palate, it is a structured wine with more depth and intensity than the classic Rosso. The silky tannins and lively acidity lend the wine elegance and length. La Caduta impressively demonstrates that Caparzo recognised the potential to overcome the boundaries of traditional categories with cru concepts for Rosso di Montalcino as early as 1983. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with shiny edges. Elegant on the nose, reminiscent of plum, with some white pepper behind it. Round and balanced on the palate, juicy, well-integrated tannins, spicy final, medium length." Falstaff
"Refined and vivid, featuring notes of red currants, cherries, sage and grapefruit peel. Medium-bodied and tightly wound, it displays zesty acidity and a lean frame, culminating in a chewy texture at the finish. Solid and characterful." James Suckling
