This single-varietal Sangiovese Grosso comes from the privileged Fonte vineyard in Castelnuovo dell'Abate – from the south-east Montalcino zone, where Monte Amiata and the River Orcia provide a Mediterranean microclimate with cool night-time breezes. Siblings Paolo and Lucia Bianchini cultivate the marly, iron-rich soils organically, just like their father Giuseppe, to whom Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona bequeathed the historic estate in 1985. After fermentation in stainless steel and concrete tanks, the wine matures for twelve months in large Slovenian oak barrels. The result: juicy wild strawberries and wild cherries, accompanied by the scent of violets and spices. On the palate, there is a supple fullness with fine acidity and silky tannins – the effortless elegance that characterises Castelnuovo dell'Abate.
