In the hills south of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where the soils are characterised by galestro and clay and the view sweeps over the Orcia Valley, a Rosso is created that can hardly be called a "second wine". Poggio di Sotto elevates the genre of Rosso di Montalcino to an art form and the 2022 vintage emphasises this with rare clarity. The year was warm, but not impetuous: after a dry winter, the summer brought high temperatures, but also large temperature differences between day and night. The autumn, dry and mild, allowed for a late, staggered harvest: An advantage for a winery that harvests Sangiovese as selectively as if it were a Grand Cru. The wine is fermented spontaneously in open wooden vats and matured in large Slavonian oak barrels – for almost three years, although the law requires far less. What would be a Brunello in other cellars is deliberately bottled as a Rosso here. And that is by no means an understatement, but a stylistic decision.
In the glass, the 2022 shimmers in a light ruby red colour, transparent and lively. The nose opens slowly, almost shyly, with wild cherries, dried roses, orange peel and a hint of laurel. Then comes the mineral core: wet stone, earth, fine smoke. Not a lavish spectacle of flavours, but a quiet, multi-layered narrative. On the palate, this Rosso is a lesson in balance: the energy of youth, the texture of maturity, carried by crystal-clear acidity and fine-grained tannins. The fruit remains cool, never cloying, always taut and precise. And the finish? Long, salty and focussed. No noise, but an impressive finish. A wine that doesn't just want to impress, but first and foremost to touch. A wine that is not only aware of its origins, but lives them with every fibre. With their 2022 Rosso, Claudio Tipa and his team make it clear that greatness does not have to do with heaviness – but with attitude. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shimmering ruby red with a violet lustre. Compact nose, ripe cherry, fresh rosemary, juniper and leather. Highly elegant and harmonious on the palate, rests in itself, noble tannin structure, elegant acidity, long, juicy final." Falstaff
"Earthy on the nose, with sour cherries, rose petals, cedar wood and a hint of walnuts. Compact and structured with a medium body, chewy tannins and good tension on the finish." James Suckling
"The delicate texture sets the tone for the aromas and flavours of strawberries, cherries, roses and minerals in this red wine. It's all about finesse, but there's no lack of structure, so it will develop over time. It shows excellent harmony, complexity and length." Wine Spectator
"The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino could easily be mistaken for a Brunello, and a very good one at that, thanks to its depth, polish and composure. The wine offers a clear preview of the 2022 vintage with dark fruit flavours and medium to full concentration, framed by a sweet, open texture neatly lifted by fresh acidity." Wine Advocate
"The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is a total pleasure. Violets give way to radiant black cherries, cedary spice and wet stone on the nose. The palate is smooth but lifted and precise, with tantalizing acidity guiding ripe red and blue fruits. Remarkably pure but potent, the 2022 leaves a saturation of licorice and clove that adds a pleasant bitter chew to the long, gently tannic finish. Few producers could deliver this level of finesse and grace from a vintage like 2022." Vinous
"The peppery, earthy nose wakes you up with incisive aromas of graphite, pencil shavings, top soil and tart cherries. On the palate, mixed berries emphasise a riper but still tart and biting cherry, while a generous salt and pepper note keeps you on your toes. A powerful yet agile wine - acrobatic." Wine Enthusiast
