In 1984, a silent act of rebellion against convention took place on a nameless podium in the hills between Gaiole and Radda. Marco Pallanti, the visionary Oenologist at Castello di Ama, dared to do the impossible: He planted Pinot Nero clones from Morey-Saint-Denis, the heart of Burgundy, in the chalky soils of Tuscany. What began as a bold experiment became a legend – il Chiuso, named after the secretive, mysterious place where Burgundy's noblest grape variety found its Tuscan soul. Five hundred metres above sea level, on intensely limestone soils reminiscent of the Grands Crus of the Côte d'Or, the descendants of those Burgundian pioneers thrive today. Clones 111, 114 and 115 from Morey-Saint-Denis have found a new identity in this exceptional terroir – tuscan in their warmth from the sun, Burgundian in their finesse. The cool microclimate of this altitude, tempered by the Chianti winds, preserves the elegance and acidity structure that help Pinot Nero achieve its purest expression.
Marco Pallanti's vision was radical: instead of Tuscanising Pinot Nero, the Tuscan terroir should enhance the Burgundian soul of the grape variety. He has been refining this philosophy for over four decades, supported by Lorenza Sebasti, who took over the management of the estate in 1993. Together they created a wine that neither imitates Burgundy nor caters to Tuscan clichés, but rather represents an authentic synthesis of both worlds.
Il Chiuso reveals itself in the glass with that intense ruby red colour reminiscent of shaded Burgundy glasses. The bouquet is an ode to the primary aromas of Pinot Nero: strawberries and sour cherries, blueberries and violets unfold in the warm Tuscan sun, while nuances of star anise and damp earth are reminiscent of Burgundian minerality. The palate reveals the true mastery of this terroir experiment: a fresh attack, harmonious structure and those velvety tannins that make Il Chiuso one of the most elegant Pinot Nero wines in Italy. Il Chiuso is a Burgundian heart beating in Tuscan soil. SUPERIORE.DE
"Strawberries and lemon peel with floral undertones come through nicely, with a medium body, lightly chewy tannins and a fruity finish. Sea salt in the aftertaste." James Suckling
"The 2022 Pinot Nero Il Chiuso offers great purity of fruit and fine balance. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, blood orange and sweet spice flesh out in the glass. Silky, plush tannins wrap it all together in style as brisk acids perk up the finish—a reminder that Pinot Noir speaks with a strong Tuscan accent at Ama." Vinous
