In 1984, on an unnamed podere in the hills between Gaiole and Radda, a quiet act of rebellion against convention took place. Marco Pallanti, the visionary Oenologist at Castello di Ama, dared to do the impossible: he planted Pinot Noir clones from Morey-Saint-Denis, the heart of Burgundy, in the chalky soils of Tuscany. What began as a bold experiment became a legend – Il Chiuso, named after that secluded, mysterious place where Burgundy's finest grape variety found its Tuscan soul. Five hundred metres above sea level, on soils with a high limestone content reminiscent of the Grands Crus of the Cote d'Or, the descendants of those Burgundian pioneers now thrive. Clones 111, 114 and 115 from Morey-Saint-Denis have found a new identity in this exceptional terroir – Tuscan in its sunny warmth, Burgundian in its finesse. The cool microclimate of this high-altitude site, tempered by the winds of Chianti, preserves the elegance and acidity that allow Pinot Nero to express itself in its purest form.

Marco Pallanti's vision was radical: rather than 'Tuscanising' Pinot Nero, the Tuscan terroir should enhance the Burgundian soul of the grape variety. For over four decades, he has been refining this philosophy, supported by Lorenza Sebasti, who took over the management of the estate in 1993. Together, they have created a wine that neither imitates Burgundy nor panders to Tuscan clichés, but represents an authentic synthesis of both worlds.

In the glass, Il Chiuso reveals that intense ruby red colour reminiscent of shaded Burgundy glasses. The bouquet is an ode to the primary aromas of Pinot Nero: strawberries and sour cherries, blueberries and violets unfold under the warm Tuscan sun, whilst hints of star anise and damp earth evoke Burgundian minerality. On the palate, the true mastery of this terroir experiment becomes apparent: a fresh attack, harmonious structure and those velvety tannins that make Il Chiuso one of Italy's most elegant Pinot Noir wines.
