Pianrosso: the red field. The name tells of iron-rich soils that give the Sangiovese that mineral depth that no cellar in the world can imitate. 11.7 hectares on the south-eastern edge of Montalcino, between 240 and 360 metres above sea level, where ancient marine material meets Galestro slate. Giuseppe Bianchini had the vineyard replanted in the 1980s, knowing that the heart of the winery lies dormant here. Pianrosso is only bottled in superior years, a strict selection of the best grapes, a whole year longer in Slavonian vats than the classic Brunello. 36 months in large wood, then further rest in the bottle. The result is not a wine for quick enjoyment, but a document of patience. In 2021, Montalcino produced one of those vintages that you never forget: bright September days, cool nights, perfect phenolic ripeness.
Deep ruby red with garnet reflections in the glass. The nose opens with wild cherry and dried strawberry, then plum, cedar wood, sandalwood, a hint of balsamic. Behind this, wild roses, new leather, forest earth. The signature of the vineyard is evident on the palate: taut, concentrated, with that salty undertone that runs like a red thread through the best Brunellos from Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The tannins are fine-grained and densely woven, almost powdery, carrying a body of medium to full structure. Star anise, mint and pink pepper on the long final. Pianrosso is the Brunello for those who really want to experience the terroir. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby colour with a pronounced garnet hue. Open and accessible nose, opens with notes of dark cherries, raspberry and some plum, with spicy cedar wood in the background. Full-bodied and intense on the palate, shows plenty of robust tannins, still brittle and slightly warming on the final, still needs a long ageing period." Falstaff
"This vintage is also flawless: after a little aeration, it has an extremely inviting aroma of wild berries, flowers, nougat and undergrowth; intense on the palate, lots of character and juice, outstanding length on complex notes of wild berries and spices. Combines complexity and elegance." Vinum
"Dark and richly textured, this expression opens with ripe fruit nuances, sweet plum and baking spice. The Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso is unapologetic about ripeness and the more concentrated side of Sangiovese, a style reinforced by the warm growing conditions of the vintage and the naturally powerful Pianrosso site. There is so much richness and phenolic texture here that it recalls warm years such as 2017 or 2019. The tannins are soft." Wine Advocate
"Enticing aromas of red cherries, dried strawberries and hints of plums, cedar, sandalwood and balsamic. Medium-bodied with a tight and rich center palate and a chewy and powerful finish. This needs time to come together and soften slightly. Best after 2029." James Suckling
