Volpaia – the foxhole. High above Radda in Chianti, at 450 to 650 metres above sea level, the vineyards of Castello di Volpaia are located on the highest slopes of the appellation. The medieval borgo, first mentioned in a document in 1172, has belonged to the Mascheroni-Stianti family since 1966, who consistently farm organically here. The altitude shapes the character: sandstone soils, cool nights and long ripening periods give the Sangiovese (supplemented by 10% Merlot) a freshness and elegance that would be hard to achieve in warmer locations. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for twelve months in large oak barrels.
Bright ruby red in the glass. Cherry, red plum, mild spices and a hint of stone on the nose. Medium-bodied on the palate with lively fruit, fine tannins and a mineral finish – a Chianti Classico of transparent purity that shows what altitude can do. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red colour. Fresh and fruity on the nose. Cherries and raspberries with black pepper. Very juicy on the palate, animating acidity, good drinking flow. Tannins still a little young. Persistent on the final." Falstaff
"The nose opens with tangy, tart fruit, then turns savory and umami with aromas of low tide, damp earth, graphite and pepper. Bing cherries and orange slices carry the palate, before a hot, textured finish of black pepper and sandy tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"Starts out with tart cherry, currant, earth, mineral and tobacco flavors on a juicy profile that quickly yields to dense, mouthpuckering tannins. Nonetheless, this isn’t overly astringent and lingers nicely." Wine Spectator
"The 2023 Chianti Classico is a very pretty, classy wine that captures the essence of Radda in its bright, lifted personality. Crushed flowers, chalk, mint, white pepper and cranberry all grace this perfumed, lithe Chianti Classico." Vinous
"Cool heights upwards of 600 metres with sunny exposures from southwest through to southeast make for a well-defined, vibrant annata. Scents of pepper-inflected wild dark and redcurrants lead to a juicy mouthful, where that small pinch of Merlot lends fleshy plum to the mix. Frisky, citrussy acidity meets easy going, rounded tannins for a harmonious package. Cheerful and moreish, this is a trusty example from the Radda district." Decanter
"Linear and fresh, with cherries, red plums, mild spices and stones on the nose. Medium-bodied with a savory touch, showing a core of vivid red fruit and a minerally finish." James Suckling
