Giacomo Neri's new top Brunello was born with the purchase of a very special vineyard. True to the winery's philosophy of making wines only from the best terroirs around Montalcino, a small 7-hectare parcel with over 45 years of vines was purchased a few years ago. And the 2018 vintage is now the premiere for a wine that radiates all the outstanding qualities of the source material and the winemaker's craft. "Casanova di Neri's latest Brunello comes from a 7 ha parcel acquired in 2017. The vineyard is located in the somewhat untamed area of Sesta, in the south-east of Montalcino, and has vines that are over 50 years old. The wine is extremely multi-faceted, exuding aromas of herbs and blood oranges. Velvety layers of fleshy persimmon and ample pliable tannins are countered by a citrusy acidity. Rabaja and Asili are probably the most famous sites in Barbaresco. Medium, finely fragrant nose of rose petals, cherries and blue blossoms, with restrained ethereal herbal notes. On the palate, powerful, compact and with a well-proportioned cornucopia of black fruits such as blackberry and cassis, plus some liquorice. As the wine progresses, it shows its power and a certain pressure, which, however, never comes across as wild or ostentatious, but always reflects the elegance of the site and the Giacosa-typical ageing in large wood. Every year, the grapes for Solaia come from the sunniest corner of the vineyard of the same name on Antinori's Tenuta Tignanello estate. "Romitorio's Riserva is a selection of the Chia family's four oldest plots, planted in 1987 with local Sangiovese clones sourced from Biondi-Santi and Soldera cuttings. This gives a sense of the estate's relatively cool, northwest-facing vineyards and surrounding woodlands. It is rather discreet and needs coaxing to elicit its appealing hints of red berries, grilled herb, porcini mushroom and forest floor. The vines for Masseto are on a 6.63 hectare vineyard site belonging to Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. Located at an altitude of 120m, the soil consists of sand, gravel and clay. It ensures that the precipitation does not seep through but is stored. Bolgheri often suffers from drought in summer. Masseto 2015 wanders impressively between power and elegance. It presents a balance and just the right amount of integration to promise a long and healthy future. It is densely woven, has a beautiful texture and creaminess that makes it sheerly seductive. "There are not many purely varietal Merlots of this class in the world, although it should not be forgotten that the Masseto is characterised by a Mediterranean climate. It is softer, juicier, sweeter than the wines from Pomerol, which grow in the Atlantic-continental climate and have a different style. The fullness and generosity of the bouquet is impressive: delicious layers of dark berries, spices, dried herbs and dark chocolate combine to form an intense composition, which is then rounded off on the palate. Slender and fine on the palate, yet with a subtle opulence that reveals new depths with each sip.
