There are a handful of wines in Italy that make us nervous every year before the first tasting because the expectations are huge. Cerretalto is undoubtedly one of them. What's more, as in this case from an exceptional year like 2019, it didn't disappoint our expectations - how could it have been otherwise?
Cerretalto is aged in oak for 36 months, and this strong characterisation has contributed to the structure, depth and contemporary character of this first-class Brunello. On the nose, minty herbs, raspberries and cherries, plus exotic spices and a hint of pine resin. Cerretalto 2019 has a deep, silky texture yet remains juicy and energising, with ripe red and black fruits infused with salty minerals, while hints of cinnamon and baker's chocolate emerge towards the end. Fine tannins emerge on the finish, tugging at the cheeks but surrounded by sweet spices and violet blossom. As young as this wine is today, it is hard to put the glass down, and we can imagine the depths that will be revealed with five or more years of ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep dark, rich ruby red colour. Shows enormous density on the nose, cigar box, pickled sour cherry, notes of graft, sugared violets, has a milk chocolate aftertaste. Enormously creamy on the palate, very full-bodied, spicy, with subtle hints of iron, tightly woven tannins, very salty at the back, powerful, enormous length, a monument!" Falstaff
"The Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto 2019 opens with medium concentration, dark fruit, ferruginous earth and black liquorice. The bouquet is very detailed. This is a big wine with lots of muscle and no fat. It finishes with smoky barbecue, cola and pressed blue flowers. These ethereal flavours only emerge after the wine has been in the glass for a while. The rich concentration envelops the palate, but does not give it any heaviness. This wine can age very well, but I love Cerretalto when its primary fruit is still recognisable (after 10 to 20 years)." Wine Advocate
"The Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto 2019 is a real eye-catcher with a bouquet that combines hauntingdark flowers, black cherries, incense, exotic spices and sweet sage. It tantalises the senses with a silky texture and the scent of ripe wild berries, while developing a steady tension on the palate with a hint of blood orange and a touch of violet blossom. The finish is structured and incredibly long, while a primary concentration lingers, leaving a stain of blackberries and sour cherries framed by regal tannins. The balance here is otherworldly. The 2019 Cerretalto shows all the best characteristics of this radiant vintage. Captivating." Vinous
"Harmonious despite its youth and power, this wine offers aromas and flavours of black cherries, blackberries, black pepper, iron and wild herbs. Although dense, its huge tannins are refined and well integrated, while the lively acidity keeps everything fresh and well structured. An impressive version that has a long life ahead of it." Wine Spectator
"Cerretalto is the coolest site of Casanova di Neri at the eastern end of the growing area, which is due to the strong temperature differences during the day. The 2019 is simply breathtaking and a thoroughbred. Intense and at the same time restrained, it smells of pulverised rock, graphite, smoke and black forest berries. On the palate, it is powerful and angular, full of vigour and strength. The dark fruit tones are balanced by tangy pomegranate and zesty acidity, and the powerful tannins are firm but not sharp-edged; they simply need time. Hints of roasted coffee beans and oregano linger." Decanter
"Wow. Seductive aromas of slate, violets and black cherries as well as some graphite and cedar. Full-bodied, this wine has incredible depth, intensity and purity that unfolds on the palate with concentrated fruit and pronounced tannins. It lingers for minutes. A wine for the long haul. The best of the vintage? Try it after 2029." James Suckling
