In the glass, the colour is a rich ruby red that thickens to a fine garnet at the edges. The nose opens with a refined profile: ripe plum, red berry and violet, accompanied by coffee powder, tobacco leaf and a hint of fine woody spices, subtly intense but never overwhelming. Lively and carefully structured on the palate, with well-embedded tannins, fresh acidity and dense fruit. The big wood is noticeable, but nuanced. For over 60 years, the Produttori del Barbaresco have stood for an uncompromising approach to quality, supported by over 50 winegrowers who contribute their best grapes from Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso to the community. The Barbaresco 2022 is a prime example of collective precision and classic style: the Nebbiolo grapes come from selected communal vineyards, some of which are adjacent to the crus, on chalky and clayey soils. Vinification was carried out traditionally: a long maceration period, ageing for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a further resting period in the bottle.

Nubiola is a Barbaresco with inner tension: differentiated, unagitated, but with a clear character. The name refers to historical roots: Vitis Nubiola was the name given to Nebbiolo in the 13th century. Pelissero has revived this term – not out of sentimentality, but because it suits the style of the wine: Complexity instead of posturing, depth instead of effect. The grapes come from various plots around Treiso, on soils of calcareous marl with a fine clay content. The sites complement each other – altitude, exposure, microclimate – to create a complex but harmonious overall picture. The wine is fermented with natural yeast and matured for 18 months in large barrels and tonneaux, all with deliberate restraint so that the structure and origin remain visible.

When Franco Pola bottled the first bottle of his Barbaresco Bordini in 1970, he not only wrote the beginning of a family story, but also symbolised the connection between man and vineyard that lasts for generations. The vineyard bears the same name as the street on which the winery stands – via Bordini 15 – and this geographical coincidence harbours a deeper truth: here, where the winery building looks directly onto the south-east-facing slope, family and terroir are inextricably interwoven. On sandy limestone/clay soil, 280 metres above sea level, Nebbiolo vines 50 to 60 years old take root – one hectare of which is even over 70 years old and ungrafted, a living link to the time when Franco's father Secondo still ran the farm as a farm.

The grapes for Prunotto's highly attractive Barbaresco come from long-standing contract plots in Treiso and Neive. The grapes are harvested selectively by hand, the lots are destemmed separately and fermented in stainless steel; the maceration time is around eight days at controlled temperatures. In the gentle hills of Neive, where the Bordini family cultivated their vines for over three hundred years, Giorgio Rivetti has been writing a new chapter in Piedmontese wine history since 2006. When the last scion of the Bordini dynasty sold his 4.5-hectare estate, the visionary winemaker of La Spinetta immediately recognised the extraordinary potential of this site. At an altitude of 240 metres, facing south-east, where calcareous marl meets sandy soils, forty-year-old Nebbiolo vines now thrive according to organic principles – without herbicides or pesticides, in harmony with nature. The Bordini was originally intended as Giorgio's basic Barbaresco, but the grapes revealed such exceptional quality that one of the most elegant representatives of the region was created. The particularly sandy soil composition gives this wine the lightness and aromatic delicacy that distinguishes it from heavier Barbaresco wines.

Tulin is a wine that looks in two directions – on the one hand deeply rooted in the single vineyard of the same name directly below the winery in Treiso, and on the other hand an expression of a modern, consciously contoured interpretation of Barbaresco. The wine comes from a south and south-west facing steep slope on calcareous marl soil, interspersed with layers of blue clay – a terroir that produces structure, precision and clarity. In the great Pelissero canon, Tulin stands for finesse with a backbone. The vines are over 50 years old and produce concentrated, but never exuberant harvest. The wine is matured for around 20 months in tonneaux and large barrels – not for effect, but for balance. Vinification is carried out with open mash fermentation and a great deal of patience in the cellar; the use of wood is deliberately minimised.

It was Domizio Cavazza, director of the Royal School of Viticulture in Alba, who gave Barbaresco its name and its claim to fame in 1894. A wine that was to stand up to the more powerful Barolo – finer, accessible earlier, but no less complex. More than a century later, the roles are clearly divided: Barbaresco stands for the elegant side of Nebbiolo, for finesse instead of power, for fragrance instead of darkness. Prunotto has found his answer to this appellation in a single vineyard: Bric Turot. Five hectares at around 200 metres, with an exposure from south-west to south-east, which gives the hill the shape of a natural amphitheatre. The soil – tortonian limestone and marl with veins of sand, rich in magnesium and manganese – is the same foundation on which Gajas Sorì Tildin stands just a few metres away. Not bad terrain then.

First mentioned in writing in 1799, it quickly attracted the attention of international wine connoisseurs: the great garnet red Barbaresco. The vineyards of the DOCG of the same name in Piedmont - more precisely in the Langhe in the province of Cuneo - begin at the north-eastern foothills of the truffle town of Alba and extend over the territory of the three municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. It is a small, manageable cultivation area: hardly more than three million bottles are produced here every year. The Barbaresco cannot be explained without referring to the Barolo, because the latter has the longer tradition, the larger cultivation area and the somewhat stricter rules. Another special feature is that the Langhe 2014 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a land of milk and honey for connoisseurs.
The Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyards of wine producers such as Angelo Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elvio Cogno, La Spinetta, Pelissero or the Produttori di Barbaresco winegrowers' cooperative are generally a little lower than those around Barolo and have slightly lighter, sandier soils which also contain more copper and zinc. The climate in the Barbaresco DOCG is somewhat warmer and drier than in the neighbouring Denomination, so that the plants reach their full maturity a little earlier.
The Nebbiolo grape is one of the greatest native grapes of Italy and is characterized by a distinctive acidity. Their shells release many tannins, which are initially hard and angular. Nevertheless, Barbaresco's long-lived wines, which are somewhat earlier to drink than Barolo's, are on average less lavish, but are generally finer, more delicate, more elegant and more supple. Most drops have more charm because they are more characterized by a soft fruit than by tannin. However, those who wanted to deduce from this that Barbaresco, often mentioned in the same breath as Barolo and Brunello, is of lesser importance would be subject to a great error, especially since some producers also produce wines in a powerful style that can stand up to the two competitors in opulence and heaviness.
The festive wine from the Langhe can be very well combined with food. Barbaresco is a very good accompaniment to strong cheeses, roasts and game dishes. The growths are traditionally aged in large old oak and chestnut barrels in which they must mature for at least one year before being bottled after at least two years - often four years - of ageing. Then the plants, which originate mainly from good years, often continue to develop in the bottle for another decade before they show all their strength, volume and elegance. The generally milder nature of Barbaresco made considerations about how to make wines drinkable earlier less compelling than in Barolo. But Barbaresco has also experimented with shorter fermentation times and shorter maturation in new oak, achieving amazing results.
A visit to Barbaresco must begin with Angelo Gaja. Italy's best-known winemaker helped the wine, which has had DOCG status since 1980, to its international breakthrough when in 1961 he decided to press his drops exclusively with his own grapes and no longer buy any fruit from other producers. After that he caused a sensation when some of his wines "downgraded" and only as Langhe put Nebbiolo in the bottle. However, this has not affected the fame and also the price development of his wines - quite the contrary. In the past 30 years, many small quality-conscious wineries have been established. The winegrowers have remained conservative to this day. Although absolute peak levels around the 700-people village of Barbaresco are reached by fewer drops than in Barolo, the best can certainly compete with the products of the neighbouring region, so that the often-heard designation "Barbaresco" is often used.
