When Franco Pola bottled the first bottle of his Barbaresco Bordini in 1970, he not only wrote the beginning of a family story, but also symbolised the connection between man and vineyard that lasts for generations. The vineyard bears the same name as the street on which the winery stands – via Bordini 15 – and this geographical coincidence harbours a deeper truth: here, where the winery building looks directly onto the south-east-facing slope, family and terroir are inextricably interwoven. On sandy limestone/clay soil, 280 metres above sea level, Nebbiolo vines 50 to 60 years old take root – one hectare of which is even over 70 years old and ungrafted, a living link to the time when Franco's father Secondo still ran the farm as a farm.
Bright garnet ruby red in the glass with orange-coloured reflections. The nose reveals an intense complexity: violets and dried roses mingle with aromas of ripe plum, Indian spices, liquorice and a hint of camphor. On the palate, Bordini reveals all its class: full-bodied and concentrated, with a silky texture and remarkably fine tannins that open up in multiple layers. Dried cherry, redcurrant and raspberry compote meld with notes of star anise, blood orange, crushed stone and dried herbs. The lively acidity gives the wine the tension and length that great Barbaresco wines are known for, while the minerality of the limestone-clay soil lends the final a crystalline precision. A wine that not only expresses the exceptional quality of old, ungrafted vines, but also the philosophy of the Pola family that has grown over five decades: to make the terroir speak with respect, artisanal precision and without compromise! "The Fontanabianca 2022 Barbaresco Bordini displays fragrant aromas of dark cherries, cassis, orange peel and crushed stone. This Nebbiolo from the current vintage is accessible overall, despite a dry tannin that increases in astringency. Bordini is the estate's historic parcel with 60-year-old plants, southern exposure and proximity to the moderating air currents of the Tanaro River." Wine Advocate
"Deep red cherries and wild strawberries dance with dried roses and sweet tobacco, while threads of orange peel and forest herbs weave through the background. The palate shows impressive concentration, with tannins that feel like velvet if you brush them in the wrong direction. This is a Barbaresco that flexes its muscles without losing its poise, offering both power and finesse in its long, savoury finish." Wine Enthusiast
