    In Neive, where the hills of Barbaresco gently undulate towards the horizon, the Pola family has been running the Fontanabianca winery since 1969. What Franco Pola started back then with the first bottle of Barbaresco Bordini is continued today by his son Aldo and grandson Matteo with the same conviction: quality is only created where the wine authentically reflects the terroir. On the limestone and clay soils of the municipality of Neive, 250 metres above sea level, the autochthonous grape varieties of Piedmont thrive in a temperate climate: Nebbiolo for the great Barbaresco wines, Dolcetto for uncomplicated pleasure and Barbera for the powerful elegance that has made this variety the region's most sophisticated popular grape.

    Fontanabianca's Barbera d'Alba Superiore comes from vines that are on average 30 years old and cultivated using the Guyot system. The colour in the glass is a bright ruby red with violet hues. The nose reveals aromas of peach, plum and dark cherry, accompanied by a subtle mineral note from the limestone soil. On the palate, the wine is powerful and fruity with the lively acidity that characterises Barbera and makes it an ideal accompaniment to food. Supple tannins give the wine structure, while the spicy component from the wood ageing adds complexity. The final is long and mineral on the palate – an authentic expression of the Piedmontese art of winemaking from Neive, where Fontanabianca has been bringing the terroir into the bottle for over five decades.     "The 2023 Barbera d'Alba Superiore delivers rich fruit with black cherry and plum. I even detect a hint of black olive, which emphasises the warmth of the vintage. Most of the fruit comes from the grandfather's two hectares of vineyards, his favourite site, and other fruit comes from a plot of half a hectare on the Bordini hill. This wine is rich and juicy."
