Some vineyards become the property of a family through strategic acquisition, others through a marriage that unites two Piedmontese families. When Aldo Pola took Luisella from nearby Serracapelli as his wife, this union not only brought two people together, but also the Pola family with the cru that is now one of the most sought-after in the municipality of Neive: Serraboella. Here, on calcareous soils of medium structure, 300 metres above sea level, Nebbiolo thrives in an interpretation that differs from the powerful Bordini – more reserved in its youth, almost shy, but with an elegance that comes to full fruition over the years. What Matteo Pola vinifies from the 30-year-old vines of this single vineyard is a Barbaresco of remarkable harmony – a wine that impresses not with its volume, but with the crystalline precision that characterises great terroirs.
Deep garnet red with ruby red reflections. The nose is initially reserved, almost restrained, but then opens up to an enchanting complexity: black cherry and raspberry mingle with aromas of dried roses, violets and spicy notes of star anise and cinnamon. A hint of camphor and earthy undertones add depth to the bouquet. Serraboella reveals all its class on the palate: full-bodied and complex, carried by a juicy acidity that gives the wine vibrancy. Macerated black cherry, accompanied by redcurrants, plums and a solid earthy foundation. The tannins are finely polished, velvety and firm at the same time – the balance that characterises world-class Barbaresco. The final is long and elegant on the palate with notes of red fruit, spices and a subtle mineral earthiness from the limestone soil. SUPERIORE.DE
"Warm-scented aromas of violets and blueberries, subtle dark chocolate, pepper; compact in the mouth, the tannins and acidity well integrated. Needs to mature." Vinum
"The 2022 Barbaresco Serraboella is a little closed at first. You have to coax the flavours out of the glass with a lot of swirling. But they come through with black cherry, liquorice, sambuca and grilled herbs. The Serraboella has a darker side to its fruit profile, which comes from the clay soils." Wine Advocate
"This Barbaresco has it all. It opens with notes of dark cherries and black fruits that unfold in the glass and on the palate, while dried herbs, tea leaves and classic tar and roses remind you where you are. The wine fills the mouth to the brim, with a richness that is both generous and structured. Think of it as the broad-shouldered cousin who still knows how to dress for dinner. Serious business, but with plenty of charm." Wine Enthusiast
