Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2024
Anyone who knows Carlo Ferrini knows that he thinks in clones. 15 carefully selected Sangiovese clones grow on the Podere Giodo in Sant'Angelo in Colle, in the south-west of Montalcino – a location that gives the Sangiovese warmth and maturity without taking away its tension. Ferrini has been working on his most personal project here since 2002, together with his daughter Bianca and cellar master Riccardo Ferrari since 2020. The Rosso di Montalcino is the latest addition to this family history – debut vintage 2024 and clearly positioned from the outset: not a stopgap, but an independent voice. 1.5 hectares at 400 metres, exposed to the south-east, medium-heavy, skeleton-rich soil, 6,600 plants per hectare. The vines are seven years old – young, but already precise in flavour. 13 days of maceration in steel, délestage at half time. Then 12 months of ageing, divided between wooden vats and cocciopesto amphorae, followed by cement. Six months in the bottle. 12,000 bottles – a generous quantity by Giodo standards, but a welcome one for the market.

“Giodo - La Quinta” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
The fifth vineyard. Such is the simple origin of this name – and so direct is Carlo Ferrini's philosophy behind it. La Quinta is not the little sister of Brunello, but its self-confident counterpart: the same address in Sant'Angelo in Colle at 400 metres, the same Sangiovese from skeleton-rich soils with a south-easterly orientation, the same care in the cellar and ageing. Only the time horizon is different. 2020 brought Montalcino warm, balanced conditions with a good night-day temperature amplitude – a vintage that favoured depth and drinkability in equal measure. 7 days of fermentation, 13 days of maceration in steel, then 12 months in a combination of 700-litre Liters, 2,500-litre Liters barrels and cocciopesto amphorae, rounded off in cement tanks. The baked clay amphora provides the breathable openness that keeps the wine alive without oxidising it.

“Giodo - La Quinta” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
Vintages write wine history – and 2021 is deeply engraved in Montalcino. Extreme drought, intense sunshine, nights that remained cool despite everything: The Sangiovese vines responded with concentrated, aromatically dense grapes that yielded little but showed a clear signature. For La Quinta, the wine from Ferrini's fifth vineyard at 400 metres above the Castello di Sant'Angelo in Colle, this meant an emphatic vintage. The vinification follows the tried and tested rhythm: 7 days of fermentation in steel, 13 days of maceration, then a year of ageing in tonneaux, large oak barrels and cocciopesto amphorae made of baked clay, before the wine is left to rest in cement and finally matures for at least 6 months in the bottle.

“Giodo - La Quinta” Rosso Toscana IGT 2022
Those who sow elegance must negotiate with the climate. The weather in 2022 was a tough negotiator in Montalcino: persistent drought, periods of heat, hardly any rainfall in the crucial summer months. The wines that emerged from this year are characterised by this – concentrated, structured, deep in fruit, with tannins that will need time. La Quinta originated, as always, from the fifth vineyard of Podere Giodo at an altitude of 400 metres – medium-gravel soils, south-easterly exposure, pure Sangiovese. Fermentation in steel for 7 days, maceration for 13 days. The 12-month wood ageing in tonneaux, large oak barrels and the characteristic Cocciopesto amphorae made of baked clay remains the stylistic backbone of the wine – an ageing process that integrates textures rather than imposing wood.

“Giodo - La Quinta” Rosso Toscana IGT 2023
Difficult vintages make honest wines. 2023 presented Tuscany with unusual challenges: a cool, rainy spring with peronospora pressure, hail damage in parts of the region, followed by a hot summer. In Montalcino, the favourable protective effect of Monte Amiata and the altitude came together in a positive way: Where the conditions were right, wines of surprising lightness and floral freshness were produced – less powerful than last year's vintage, but with a grace that becomes a strength in good hands. Carla Ferrini's fifth vineyard at 400 metres also yielded single-varietal Sangiovese in 2023, which was vinified according to a tried-and-tested method: 7 days of fermentation, 13 days of maceration, 12 months of ageing in tonneaux, oak barrels and cocciopesto amphorae, rounding off in cement, 6 months in the bottle. A rhythm that allows the wine to tell the story of the vintage – without correcting it.

Prètto. A word from the Tuscan dialect – true, sincere, schietto. Carlo Ferrini could not have chosen a more fitting name for a wine that is exactly that: no gesture, no staging, but Sangiovese in its most direct form. The Prètto is a joint effort – born from the dialogue between father and daughter, between three decades of experience and a young generation that sees Montalcino with new eyes. Bianca Ferrini, born in 1990, has given the Giodo project a very special voice with this wine. Four hectares of Sangiovese in Sant'Angelo in Colle, south-west Montalcino, at 360 metres in south-eastern exposure. Medium-heavy, skeleton-rich soil, 6,600 plants per hectare – a density that creates stress and forces concentration. Hand-picked, 20 days of maceration in steel and cement, délestage halfway through fermentation. Then around 30 months of ageing in 500, 700 and 2,500 Literswooden barrels – medium to large containers that give the wine structure without wood characterisation. Then six months in cement, followed by a further 12 months in the bottle. 12,000 bottles were produced.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
When the world-famous Oenologist Carlo Ferrini makes his own wine, you can't help but be excited. Here, he has succeeded in creating an interpretation of Sangiovese that brings all his experience from decades of working with this grape variety to the fore as if through a burning glass. The moderate use of wood through ageing in 700-litre tonneaux expresses the clarity and personality of the grape and the unique terroir (there are just 1.5 hectares of the best Brunello sites) in an archetypal way. A great harmony of dark cherries, black fruits, spices, leather and tobacco, ideally integrated tannins and great persistence will quickly make the few thousand bottles a sought-after collector's item. The name is a tribute. Giodo – composed of Giovanna and Donatello, the names of his parents. Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy's most important Oenologist, has dedicated his life to Sangiovese – as a consultant for estates from Montalcino to Etna and as the designer of some of the most influential wines in Tuscany over the last three decades. It was not a question of if he would found his own winery at some point, but when. In 2002, he found it: ten hectares in Sant'Angelo in Colle, south-west Montalcino, seven of them woodland, three for the vine. His daughter Bianca Ferrini added what is behind the wine: "It is the first vintage in the new cellar, the first chapter together with my father."

"Everyone who has anything to do with wine in Italy knows this salt-and-pepper moustache," a wine critic recently wrote. The friendly smile and the always alert sparkling eyes of course. After all, Carlo Ferrini is one of the most famous oenologists in Italy. As a consultant he is in charge of numerous renowned wineries from South Tyrol to Sicily, such as Casanova di Neri, Brancaia, Castello del Romitorio, Fonterutoli, Nittardi, Mazzei, Petrolo, Poliziano, Ricasoli, Talenti, Pietradolce, Tasca d'Almerita, Tenuta delle Terre Nere or Zisola, to name but a few. But the love of the native Florentine is for the grapes of his homeland, which earned him the nickname Mr. Sangiovese.
"When you work for decades in the vineyards and cellars of your customers, at some point the desire grows for your own vineyard, where you can do everything the way you want to", smiles the long-standing technical director of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, and adds "and that doesn't mean I want to press the best wine in the world, but wine that tastes best to me". Ferrini seeks elegance. No wonder then that he planted his first vineyards in Montalcino in 2002.
Already during his agronomic studies in Florence, and of course afterwards as a consultant, Carlo Ferrini was concerned with the soils, the rootstock vines and the best Sangiovese clones. His Podere Giodo, so named in homage to his parents Giovanna and Donatello, is located in the south of Montalcino between the village of Sant'Angelo in Colle and the monastery of Sant'Antimo, behind which rises Monte Amiata. And although there are many vineyards of the most renowned Brunello producers, part of the landscape here is still as it was fifty years ago, before the great boom. Oak woods, a few wheat fields and undergrowth, you could call it archaic maquis.
Exactly in such an untreated spot, a bumpy gravel road leads steeply uphill. To a dilapidated stone house that is being renovated and a fascinating semi-circle of cypresses that one would rather expect to find in a palazzo. Behind it today are 2.5 hectares of best Brunello sites, because the fallow land with south-eastern exposure, with medium-heavy, stony soils was virtually a rough diamond that one only had to work and shape into a vineyard. After a few years, so much more was added. Land lying fallow again. Even a hundred meters higher, at about 400 m above sea level, even more stony.
Eight different Sangiovese clones, which Ferrini appreciated from his scientific research and from his decades of experience as small and loose berries with low vigour, were gradually planted in "cordone speronato" cultivation. Today the area is about 6.5 hectares. The older vineyards supply the grapes for the elegant Brunello di Montalcino, the grapes of the younger plants are used for the Rosso Toscana IGT, which is somewhat more delicate but also finely balanced, fruity but elegant, and is accompanied by great drinking pleasure. Ferrini obtains its elegance through the strictest selection of the berries, spontaneous fermentation with its own yeasts and ageing in cement and 700-litre barrels, because: "The wood should only accompany the ageing, you should not feel it".
Another wish is coming true especially for the mid-sixties, as his daughter Bianca, who became a world-class water polo player in addition to her agricultural studies, completed her additional marketing studies in the USA and returned to support her father in building up Podere Giodo. Because there is still a lot to do. In addition to renovating the old buildings, a basement is currently being completed, and Carlo Ferrini's late second love also requires a lot of work. She is called Nerello Mascalese and grows at 900 m above sea level on Etna in centennial Albarello trees. But that will be a different story. Coming here soon. SUPERIORE.DE
