The name is a tribute. Giodo – composed of Giovanna and Donatello, the names of his parents. Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy's most important Oenologist, has dedicated his life to Sangiovese – as a consultant for estates from Montalcino to Etna and as the designer of some of the most influential wines in Tuscany over the last three decades. It was not a question of if he would found his own winery at some point, but when. In 2002, he found it: ten hectares in Sant'Angelo in Colle, south-west Montalcino, seven of them woodland, three for the vine. And the vine here is exclusively Sangiovese – 15 carefully selected clones, planted with the patience of a man who knows that great wines are not made, but accompanied.
Today, Bianca Ferrini runs the winery together with her father – and Riccardo Ferrari, cellar master and life partner. A small, precise team that thinks of each vintage as a whole: 4 hectares at 360 metres, south-eastern exposure, medium-heavy, skeleton-rich soil, 6,600 plants per hectare, 60 quintals yield. Hand-picked, 20 days of maceration in steel and cement, délestage halfway through fermentation. Then the crucial work: careful selection of the individual barrels in the cellar – around 30 months of ageing in wood, followed by six months in cement and 12 months in the bottle. 7,000 bottles. That's all there is to it.
Deep, bright ruby red in the glass. The nose is exceptional: violets, ripe cherry, raspberry, citrus peel, tobacco, a hint of earth and lavender – everything is precise, nothing overpowering. Dry on the palate, with an acidity that supports the wine like a backbone, velvety, fine-grained tannins and a final of great length and tension. Montalcino in its purest form – no spectacle, no effect. Just Sangiovese that knows exactly where it comes from. SUPERIORE.DE
"Captivates on the nose: Wild berries, tobacco and spices in harmony; a texture full of character, the tightly woven tannins well integrated, the long final multi-faceted and balanced. A great wine that should mature." Vinum
"Bright, intense ruby colour with a delicate garnet hue. Presents itself with an enchanting nose, full of ripe wild raspberries, dark cherries and blackberries, plus a hint of blood orange and watermelon. Polished attack and finish, opens up with plenty of fine tannins, great tension, very good drinking flow, the bottle is empty before you know it!" Falstaff
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino seduces with a bouquet of crushed stones, rosemary, orange peel and dried black cherries. It is polished, with a cascade of wild berry fruits and autumnal spices riding a wave of pure silk. Long and structured, but not austere, the 2021 leaves the senses with a primary concentration that demands more." Vinous
"A symphony of its munificent surroundings in Montalcino’s southeast, Giodo emphasises Sangiovese’s fragrant side. All very red and ripe, it exudes raspberry, red cherry compote and strawberry bush; accents of allspice, nutmeg and coriander emerge as it opens. This is lush and sleekly textured through the concentrated core. Zippy acidity keeps it light on its feet. While the 2021 may come across as breezy at first, underlying tension, grip and length speak to a sophisticated package." Decanter
"This is the top wine from Carlo Ferrini. The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows remarkable elegance and grace, especially in this classic vintage. It is initially restrained and invites patience, which bodes well for its long-term ageing potential. The wine is complex and beautiful and, as expected, clearly stands out from the middle bottling "Prètto". The Giodo moves with fine footsteps, and when I returned to the opened bottle the next day, the streamlined mouthfeel and lingering freshness became even more apparent, reflecting both the classic character of the year and the maturity of the vineyards." Wine Advocate
"The purity of the fruit and the elegance are so beautiful, perfumed and ethereal. It's medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and gorgeous black cherry, blackberry and bramble flavours with a hint of cedar. Lively finish. Better in 2028 and beyond." James Suckling
