Prètto. A word from the Tuscan dialect – true, sincere, schietto. Carlo Ferrini could not have chosen a more fitting name for a wine that is exactly that: no pretence, no posturing, but Sangiovese in its most direct form. The Prètto is a collaborative effort – born out of a dialogue between father and daughter, between three decades of experience and a younger generation that sees Montalcino through fresh eyes. Bianca Ferrini, born in 1990, has given the Giodo project a very special voice with this wine. Four hectares of Sangiovese in Sant'Angelo in Colle, south-west of Montalcino, at an altitude of 360 metres with a south-easterly aspect. Medium-heavy, stony soil, 6,600 vines per hectare – a density that creates stress and forces concentration. Hand-harvested, 20 days' maceration in steel and concrete, with délestage halfway through fermentation. This is followed by around 30 months' ageing in wooden barrels of 500, 700 and 2,500 Liters– medium to large vessels that give the wine structure without imparting excessive oak character. Followed by six months in concrete tanks, then a further 12 months in bottle. 12,000 bottles were produced.
The 2021 vintage provides the ideal backdrop. "Fragrant, distinct and vertical". This is precisely what the Prètto expresses: a brilliant ruby red colour, with aromas of crushed raspberry, violets, citrus zest and a hint of cedarwood. Fresh on the palate, with fine, grippy tannins, lively acidity and a final that lingers longer than the price would suggest. Accessible today, with potential to develop further tomorrow. SUPERIORE.DE
"A brilliant ruby red with a subtle garnet sheen. Fragrant and appealing on the nose, with notes of fresh roses, blood oranges and crisp cherries. On the palate, too, it is very fruit-driven, with cranberries and cherries, finely textured tannins and excellent drinkability." Falstaff
Giodo's latest release, Prètto, is a collaboration between Carlo Ferrini and his 35-year-old daughter Bianca. It was created with her generation in mind and aims to highlight the wine's freshness and immediate drinkability without compromising the essence of Brunello. It bursts with appealing Mediterranean herbs, vanilla and mandarin. Well-formed, plump and firm stone fruits are accompanied by soft, delicate tannins that dance gracefully around the palate. It achieves depth without being heavy, and richness with vibrancy." Decanter
"This new wine from Carlo Ferrini, which displays a more cheerful character, is intended to bridge the gap between his Rosso and the flagship Giodo Brunello. The Giodo 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Prètto represents a new mid-range Brunello, a category increasingly shaped by a market that is less tolerant of overpriced wines. In the Tuscan dialect, Prètto means 'true' or 'sincere'. It delivers rich fruit, achieved through a slow 20-day maceration on the skins, alongside notes of spices, white pepper and crushed violets. The wine is somewhat more approachable in style, yet retains good freshness and balance, reflecting Ferrini's intention to offer an honest and immediately appealing Brunello." Wine Advocate
"Crushed black raspberries blend with cedarwood shavings, sweet lavender and crushed violets as the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Pretto unfolds its dark, alluring bouquet. It is juicy, offering fresh acidity and a cascade of ripe red and blue fruits, whilst violet blossoms at its core lend the wine a sweet, fragrant character. The wine displays exceptional length and a balanced structure, with a hint of citrus enlivening the finish." Vinous
"Deep, rich and plummy, this red offers a suave profile and flavors of plum, kirsch, mineral and wild herbs. Polished and harmonious, with fine persistence on the finish." Wine Spectator
"A new wine, selected from a range of casks. It certainly differs from the standard bottling, with aromas of red cherries, cedar wood, hibiscus and crushed stone. On the palate, it displays rounded tannins and a juicy, hearty finish." James Suckling
