The name is a tribute. Giodo – a combination of Giovanna and Donatello, his parents' names. Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy's most distinguished Oenologist, has dedicated his life to Sangiovese – as a consultant to estates stretching from Montalcino to Etna, and as the architect of some of Tuscany's most influential wines of the last three decades. It was never a question of 'if', but of 'when' he would eventually establish his own vineyard. In 2002, he found it: ten hectares in Sant'Angelo in Colle, south-west of Montalcino, seven of which were woodland and three set aside for vines. And the only grape variety grown here is Sangiovese – 15 carefully selected clones, planted with the patience of a man who knows that great wines are not made, but nurtured.

Today, Bianca Ferrini runs the winery alongside her father – and Riccardo Ferrari, the cellar master and her partner. A small, meticulous team that approaches each vintage as a whole: 4 hectares at 360 metres, south-easterly aspect, medium-textured, stony soil, 6,600 vines per hectare, a yield of 60 quintals. Hand-harvested, 20 days' maceration in steel and concrete tanks, délestage halfway through fermentation. Then comes the crucial work: a careful selection of individual barrels in the cellar – around 30 months' ageing in wood, followed by six months in concrete and 12 months in bottle. 7,000 bottles. That's all there is of it.

In the glass, a deep, luminous ruby red. The nose is exceptional: violets, ripe cherries, raspberries, citrus zest, tobacco, a hint of earth and lavender – all precise, nothing overpowering. On the palate, it is dry, with acidity that underpins the wine like a backbone, velvety, fine-grained tannins and a final of great length and tension.
