Cellar master Rudi Kofler once put it this way: he was searching for a wine that embodied the very essence and authentic character of the Cantina Terlan. A wine that brings together the greatness of the finest vines and vineyard sites. The result is the Terlaner I Grande Cuvée – which, since 1893, has been the quiet flagship of a cooperative that has proven that depth and time are not a matter of ownership. Terlan lies in the Adige Valley, sheltered in the shadow of the Tschöggelberg, on the southern foothills of the Alps. What distinguishes the soil beneath the vines from all other soils in South Tyrol is a geological phenomenon: beneath Terlan lies a subvolcanic rock formation whose composition differs fundamentally from that of classic volcanic rock. Over millions of years, a unique crystalline conglomerate formed within it – —an unusually high concentration of minerals that the soil passes on to the roots. No calcium carbonate, a slightly acidic pH, sandy porphyry weathering soils: stress-induced minerality as the principle, salinity as the result.
The Terlaner I brings together the estate’s three single-vineyard wines in a single bottle: 90% Pinot Blanc from Vorberg, 7% Chardonnay from Kreuth, 3% Sauvignon from Winkl – the winery’s single-varietal crus in their most concentrated form. Whole-bunch pressing, slow fermentation in large wooden casks, malolactic fermentation, twelve months sur lie on the fine lees in wooden casks, blending only in March, followed by a further four months in stainless-steel tanks before bottling. No rush, no haste – that is Terlano’s very own philosophy.
A radiant straw-yellow colour in the glass. The nose is rich and complex: citrus fruits, white pepper, herbs, a delicate smoky note, underpinned by the characteristic yeasty note resulting from the long ageing period. On the palate, it displays remarkable structure and texture – elegance and balance that unfold against a mineral backdrop. The finish is exceptionally long and salty, with a persistence reminiscent of the mineral spring from which this wine originates. A wine for contemplation, as the winery itself recommends. And that is not just a marketing slogan, but a precise guide to enjoying it. SUPERIORE.DE
"An overwhelming intensity of fresh flowers and herbs intertwined with yellow stone and tropical fruits; each component judiciously layered with sumptuous nurturing oak. Gloriously full with taut acidity and a fabulous lime peel finish. A masterpiece." Decanter
