Those who sow elegance must negotiate with the climate. The weather in 2022 was a tough negotiator in Montalcino: persistent drought, periods of heat, hardly any rainfall in the crucial summer months. The wines that emerged from this year are characterised by this – concentrated, structured, deep in fruit, with tannins that will need time. La Quinta originated, as always, from the fifth vineyard of Podere Giodo at an altitude of 400 metres – medium-gravel soils, south-easterly exposure, pure Sangiovese. Fermentation in steel for 7 days, maceration for 13 days. The 12-month wood ageing in tonneaux, large oak barrels and the characteristic Cocciopesto amphorae made of baked clay remains the stylistic backbone of the wine – an ageing process that integrates textures rather than imposing wood.

Dark ruby red colour. The nose opens with ripe cherries, plums, tobacco and a mineral undertone. Powerful and dense on the palate – the tannins still require a little patience, the acidity keeps everything in balance. A La Quinta for the cellar, but one that is already holding its own with powerful dishes. SUPERIORE.DE

"This wine is a bit of a provocation, because although it could technically qualify as a Rosso di Montalcino, it aims much higher and therefore wears its IGT Toscana designation very proudly. The Giodo 2022 La Quinta is made exclusively from Sangiovese from eight-year-old vines planted in front of Carlo Ferrini's stone-clad vineyard. Ferrini tells me that he took his inspiration for this bottle from Chianti Classico rather than Montalcino. The wine shows great volume and lots of bright primary fruit with cherry, fresh cranberry, incense and spice. This area has withstood the summer heat of 2022 because it is located on the eastern side of the appellation and is surrounded by cooling forests. This wine contains lots of beautiful fruit and the freshness of Sangiovese together with elegant, powdery tannins." Wine Advocate
