“Belguardo” Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC 2025
Belguardo – the beautiful view. The Mazzei family gave their Maremma estate this name in 1997, and it fits: From the hills between Grosseto and Montiano, the view stretches as far as the Tyrrhenian Sea, just ten kilometres away. This proximity is not a romantic detail – it is terroir. The sea breezes cool the vineyards every day, slowing down ripening and maintaining the freshness that characterises Vermentino on these sandy Arenaria soils.

“Belguardo” Rosé Toscana IGT 2025
The Mazzei family acquired the Tenuta Belguardo in the Tuscan Maremma in 1997 – on the hills between Grosseto and Montiano, ten kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea. An estate with a view and sea breeze, on sandy Arenaria and Alberese soils. Here, the family opted for an unusual pairing: Sangiovese and Syrah as the basis for a rosé, which forms a category of its own in the Maremma. Sangiovese brings freshness and structure. Syrah brings the floral fragrance and Mediterranean depth. The short maceration time preserves the elegance of both varieties without taking away their character.

!["Bronzone" Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG 2021]()
“Bronzone” Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG 2021
"Bronzone" is the powerful yet elegant Riserva from Tenuta Belguardo – a Morellino di Scansano that epitomises the modern class of the Maremma. The Sangiovese grapes, known here as Morellino, come from south-facing slopes on clay and limestone-rich soils near Grosseto. Old vines, low yields and consistent manual harvesting form the basis for this Riserva with a strong character. The 2021 vintage in the Maremma was characterised by a cool spring, followed by a warm, dry summer with cool nights, which produced perfectly ripe, aromatically concentrated berries. After temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine matured for around 14 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux before finding its harmony in the bottle.

!["Belguardo" Ciliegiolo Maremma Toscana IGT 2024]()
“Belguardo” Ciliegiolo Maremma Toscana IGT 2024
The little cherry. The name reveals its personality: this autochthonous Maremma variety openly bears its flavour in its name, and it means business. Ciliegiolo was at home in Maremma for a long time, but then fell out of fashion because Cabernet and Sangiovese virtually monopolised the region's attention. Now it is returning – and Belguardo is one of the first houses to take it seriously again. The vineyards are situated at 100 metres, west-facing, on sandy Arenaria soils with a fine pebble content. The western exposure gives the wine a freshness and lightness that cannot be taken for granted in the Maremma. Francesco Mazzei describes it as "exceptionally lively and fresh – and surprisingly deep at the same time."

!["Tirrenico" Rosso Maremma Toscana DOC 2022]()
“Tirrenico” Rosso Maremma Toscana DOC 2022
A modern Maremma-Rosso with a maritime influence: "Tirrenico" combines Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot – all internationally influenced grape varieties that find their very own expression here on the Tuscan coast. Despite the warm vintage, the 2022 is balanced and clearly structured. Dark ruby in the glass with violet reflections. Ripe blackcurrant, plum, some graphite, herbal spice and a hint of eucalyptus on the nose. Juicy on the palate, with present, ripe fruit, fine-grained tannins and a fresh, mineral finish. The ageing in barriques adds depth without dominating. A powerful yet elegant red with a Tuscan soul and international stature. SUPERIORE.DE

“Belguardo V” Vermentino Maremma Toscana Superiore DOC 2024
In 2008, the Mazzei family began an agronomic and oenological research project to answer a single question: can Vermentino in Maremma really be great? Not pleasant, not pleasing – but great. Deep, complex, storable. The answer came with the 2021 vintage, when the former "Codice V" became "Belguardo V" – and with it the first ever Vermentino Superiore Maremma Toscana DOC on the market. The "Superiore" stands for a conviction that took 13 years for the wine to earn the designation.

!["Tenuta Belguardo" Rosso Maremma Toscana Riserva DOC 2021]()
“Tenuta Belguardo” Rosso Maremma Toscana Riserva DOC 2021
In 1398, Ser Lapo Mazzei wrote a letter in which the word "Chianti" is used in the modern sense of wine for the first time. The oldest document of its kind. The family that wrote this letter is still making wine today – for more than 600 years, now in its seventeenth generation. When a family dynasty of this depth comes to the Maremma in 1997 and decides to grow its most important wine on the sandy soils between Grosseto and Montiano, it is a vote of confidence in a terroir. The philosophy is clearly formulated: Tenuta Belguardo only releases in the best vintages. No compromises. Since the first vintage in 2000, this attitude has defined the positioning of the cru: not quantity, but statement. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from parcels with the highest proportion of sandstone and skeleton, which demand from the Cabernet a balance between natural power and elegance that would not be achieved on heavier soil. 15% Cabernet Franc is the perfect counterpart: structured, herbal, characterised by freshness even in hot vintages.

The Marchesi Mazzei family has been inseparably linked to Tuscany and viticulture since the 11th century. Ser Lapo Mazzei was the author of a historical document in which the term "Chianti" was first mentioned. The Castello di Fonterutoli has been the ancestral seat since 1435 and is known to every lover of Italian wine. In the 1990s, the Mazzei family also acquired the Tenuta Belguardo, with 70 hectares of land in the hills between Grosseto and Montiano in the southernmost part of Tuscany, the Maremma.
After an elaborate and long analysis of the unique terroir on partly quite steep hills, which are foothills of extinct volcanoes and the Ore Mountains in the hinterland, it was decided to plant mainly autochthonous grape varieties such as Vermentino, Alicante and Sangiovese and only a few international vines such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah. 5,500 to 6,000 vines per hectare are relatively large in this region. The extremely good aeration of the Tyrrhenian Sea, only a few kilometres away, its light reflections and the low precipitation make it possible. The limestone and sandstone soils are mineral - the Etruscans already mined iron ore, silver and copper in the "Colline Metallifere Grossetane" of the mountains at the back. In freshly ploughed fields, the earth still shines a distinct reddish brown. The 34 hectares of vineyards lie between 50 and 180 metres above sea level and drop steeply to the south and southwest.
This influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the interplay of microclimate, light and soil enables the cultivation of a wide variety of vines. For this reason, many grape varieties are experimented with on newly acquired areas. One can be curious. The Marchesi Mazzei have achieved one thing in a very short time: to set new quality standards with the Tenuta Belguardo in the Maremma and to achieve the highest ratings in the region with their wines.
In addition to Castello di Fonterutoli and Tenuta Belguardo, the Zisola winery near Noto in southwestern Sicily belongs to the Mazzei family, where olive oil and citrus fruits are also cultivated. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Maremma branch of the Mazzei family gained general recognition, virtually in the form of a lightning action, thereby underpinning the already undisputed reputation of one of the most prestigious Italian wine houses."Gambero Rosso
