In 2008, the Mazzei family began an agronomic and oenological research project to answer a single question: can Vermentino in Maremma really be great? Not pleasant, not pleasing – but great. Deep, complex, storable. The answer came with the 2021 vintage, when the former "Codice V" became "Belguardo V" – and with it the first ever Vermentino Superiore Maremma Toscana DOC on the market. The "Superiore" stands for a conviction that took 13 years for the wine to earn the designation.

Four Vermentino clones are at the heart of the wine: two from Corsica, which contribute floral aromas and primary flavours, and two from Sardinia, which provide structure and mineral spice. The vineyards at 90 metres above sea level, the sandy Arenaria soils, the sea breezes from ten kilometres away – all combine to create a terroir that makes Vermentino not light, but deep. In the cellar, three paths are followed simultaneously: one part in the amphora on the skins, one part in steel sur lies, a small proportion in barriques. These three voices become one.

Golden straw yellow with greenish reflections. Sunny and complex on the nose: white flowers, citrus peel, peach, herbs from the maquis, mineral depth. Muscular and expressive on the palate, with lively flavour and long persistence. A white wine that is best served not too cold – and even goes well with dishes that normally require a red wine.
