In the heart of Valdarno, where history and vision merge in a timeless act of faith, Il Borro – the flagship wine of a dream that began in 1993, when Ferruccio Ferragamo acquired the abandoned medieval village and brought it back to life. This exceptional blend not only embodies the essence of the Il Borro estate, but also the unshakeable conviction that wines of global appeal can be created from careful terroir analysis and a visionary grape variety philosophy. After meticulous geological studies, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah were planted on the soils that promise them optimal development: Merlot on the clay-rich layers, Cabernet Sauvignon in the alluvial sand, Syrah on the mineral-rich, stony terraces at the foot of Monte Pratomagno. Between 300 and 500 metres above sea level, the vines thrive on sandstone subsoil over a loamy-sandy matrix – a rare combination that was already considered ideal for great wines during the Renaissance. The dense planting of 4,500 vines per hectare forces each vine to fight for nutrients and concentrates the flavours in the berries.
Vinification follows the strictest principles: After manual harvesting and visual selection, the grape varieties are vinified separately, subjected to a controlled bloodletting of 10-20% to increase concentration, and undergo 22 days of maceration at 28°C. The blend is matured in new Allier barriques for 18 months, followed by a further eight months of bottle ageing – time, which gives this great wine the necessary complexity and harmony.
Deep violet in colour with purple hues, it is a sign of the exceptional concentration of the vintage. The opulent bouquet unfolds layers of ripe raspberries and cherries, interspersed with floral notes of wild herbs and mineral iron accents that give the wine its characteristic depth. Nuances of violets, laurel and cedar wood merge with hints of dark chocolate and exotic spices to create an aromatic profile of fascinating complexity. On the palate, Il Borro is a wine of rare elegance and power: supple and almost opulent, with a core of sweet red fruit, supported by firm but silky tannins and a lively structure. Vanilla and spicy notes from the barrel ageing lead to a long, powerful finish that reveals the full personality of this exceptional terroir. A wine that combines past and future in one glass – il Borro is not just a flagship, but the soul of a dream of stone, earth and time. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby colour with purple nuances. Dark and spicy nose of pipe tobacco, ebony, dark plum, also slightly balsamic. Dense and soft on the palate with dark chocolate, plums and rosemary, powerful and even, long." Falstaff
"Although lush and concentrated, this red wine is also light on its feet. Flavours of plum, blackberry, boysenberry and fruitcake abound, accented by notes of iron and spice, with a hint of wild herbs. Firm tannins line the finish, which nevertheless displays a fine harmony and a long-lasting aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The organic wine Il Borro 2020 is a powerful Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The wine shows a lot of oak, which is noticeable as roasted spices, coconut or buttered almonds. There is a distant note of dried dill, which disappears in the context of the big, ripe black fruit at the core. You get a lot of richness and fruit weight from a hot vintage." Wine Advocate
"A tantalising hint of tobacco, incense and mint gives way to dried black cherries and shavings of dark chocolate as the Il Borro 2020 slowly blossoms in the glass. It flows with ease across the palate, supple and seamlessly silky in texture, with ripe red and black fruits taking on a tactile feel as grippy tannins and minerals mingle towards the finish. It finishes structured and powerful with a dramatic length that leaves a minty finish and a hint of tart blackberry that slowly fades away. The haunting, dark 2020 focuses on elegance, but also shows a sense of refinement and balance that will carry it for many years to come in the cellar." Vinous
"Initially intensely spicy, with topsoil, graphite, leather, then fresh and floral with crushed sage and lavender, before wild cherry and wild strawberry emerge. On the palate, the black cherry notes are generous and bright, but with deep, brooding earth tones for contrast. The tannins are refined but tensile like good armour, and a warm but invigorating salinity runs through a long finish." Wine Enthusiast
"This is a round and quite juicy young wine with notes of blackberries, chocolate and grilled meat. Full and complex with very fine tannins that are well integrated and a bright finish. Lively on the finish." James Suckling
