For a long time, Nero di Troia was Northern Apulia's well-kept secret – used in blends, but rarely as a single variety. Torrevento changed that in 1993: the Vigna Pedale was the world's first single-varietal Nero di Troia. Since then, it has been the estate's flagship wine – and, right up to the current 2019 vintage, has left Gambero Rosso with no choice but to award it the highest rating eight times in a row.

The Contrada Pedale is situated at an altitude of 400–500 metres in the Parco Rurale della Murgia, 13 km from the sea. It features weathered limestone soils and karst formations, and is exposed to a constant sea breeze. The vines are over 30 years old and harvested late – at the end of October, when the Nero di Troia has fully developed its aromatic depth. In the cellar: fermentation on the skins with a long maceration period in stainless-steel tanks, followed by eight months' ageing in steel, then twelve months in large oak casks. No barrique influence, no overpowering oak – the fruit remains the focus.

Deep ruby red with garnet highlights. On the nose, blackberry, plum and black cherry, underpinned by bay leaf, black pepper, tobacco and a slightly balsamic herbal note. On the palate, it is powerful yet precise – soft tannins, good length, and a spicy finish with a mineral aftertaste. Every vintage is a delight! SUPERIORE.DE
