Nero di Troia was long the well-kept secret of northern Apulia – used in cuvées, rarely in its pure form. Torrevento changed this in 1993: the Vigna Pedale was the first single-varietal Nero di Troia in the world. Since then, it has been the flagship of the winery – and has left the Gambero Rosso with no choice but to award it the highest rating eight times in a row up to the current 2019 vintage.

The Contrada Pedale is situated at 400–500 metres in the Parco Rurale della Murgia, 13 km from the sea. Weathered limestone soils, karst formations, exposed to constant sea winds. The vines are over 30 years old, harvested late – at the end of October, when the Nero di Troia has just fully developed its aromatic depth. In the cellar: Mash fermentation with a long period in stainless steel tanks, then eight months of steel ageing, followed by twelve months in large oak barrels. No barrique pressure, no wood overhang – the fruit remains the centre.

Deep ruby red with garnet reflections. Blackberry, plum and black cherry on the nose, underpinned by laurel, black pepper, tobacco and a slightly balsamic herbal note.
