He is a little quieter than Annamaria Clementi, but no less ambitious: Vintage Collection Noir is the discreet flagship in Ca' del Bosco's second range - pure Pinot Nero, vinified as Franciacorta Riserva, without dosage, but with a clear vision. A sparkling wine for purists that does not need ornamentation, but favours line, depth and contour. 2016 was a year of balance - and it seems as if the Noir has absorbed this balance in every fibre. The grapes come from the coolest vineyards in the estate, where Pinot Nero can develop both strength and fragility. After selective hand-picking, the grapes are carefully destemmed, gently pressed and fermented in small oak barrels. The base wine rests on the lees for seven months before being bottled. This is followed by extended ageing on the lees for at least 7 years - the backbone of this Riserva. It is disgorged without any dosage: puristic, clear and uncompromising.

In the glass, a radiant gold colour with a copper hint, vividly streaked with the finest mousseux. On the nose, redcurrant, pink grapefruit, subtle smoky notes, dried herbs, chalk and damp slate. No obvious Pinot flavour, but a deeply interwoven aroma that focuses on tension rather than sweetness. Crystal clear, chiselled and almost linear on the palate - with supporting acidity, salty energy, restrained fruit and impressive persistence. Vintage Collection Noir is not a Metodo Classico for applause, but for the moment of concentration. A Franciacorta that does not interpret the pure Pinot Nero in a flattering way, but takes it seriously - with clarity, depth and staying power. SUPERIORE.DE
