The choice of grape variety and vintage for the Cantina Terlan inery's rarity wine are secrets that are closely guarded for a long time - until just a few weeks before the official presentation. In spring 2023, Cantina Terlan Winery traditionally presented its new strictly limited rarity wine. The winery management decided on the Pinot Bianco 2010. The Pinot Blanc 2010 is the eleventh rare wine to be stored under the expert direction of Kofler.

Light, bright straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections. Impressively fresh on the nose - herbal notes of camomile, lemon balm and lovage as well as a hint of dried persimmon and apricot. At the same time, the multi-faceted bouquet also has a scent of bread crust and yeast plait paired with a subtle flint aroma. Smooth and powerful on the palate with a crisp, fresh acidity that nevertheless leaves a delicate impression and ideally complements the mineral tension. "This is a careful expression of Pinot Bianco from steep vineyards at 550 to 600 meters in elevation, with 30% to 50% inclines. The 2010 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Rarity is a gorgeous wine that, despite its many years of age, tastes remarkably fresh and primary. The aromas are on the reduced side, and this bodes well for future evolution. The complexity of the bouquet is underlined by candied apricot, star fruit, sour cream and green curry. To those aromas, I would add topical accents of guava or green papaya that play into the natural freshness of this generous, mid-weight white. This is a stellar wine (with only 3,500 bottles made)." Rabaja and Asili are probably the most famous sites in Barbaresco. Medium, finely fragrant nose of rose petals, cherries and blue blossoms, with restrained ethereal herbal notes. On the palate, powerful, compact and with a well-proportioned cornucopia of black fruits such as blackberry and cassis, plus some liquorice. As the wine progresses, it shows its power and a certain pressure, which, however, never comes across as wild or ostentatious, but always reflects the elegance of the site and the Giacosa-typical ageing in large wood. "The Bruno Giacosa 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is a fine and delicate wine that throws a curveball at our expectations of this notoriously hot and dry vintage. The wine is exceedingly generous when it comes to its fruit, especially its blackcurrant and plum, but what steals the show is that elegant mineral note that so seamlessly cedes to spice, licorice and cinnamon. Rabajà is one of the most distinctive growing sites in Barbaresco, thanks to its white stony soils that leave such a strong imprint on its wines. Cult sparkling wine named after the founder of the winery: bright, luminous yellow colour, lively, fine mousse. The grapes for the "Suolo" Brunello selection come from the vineyard of the same name and from the estate's oldest vines. They lie at an altitude of 320 metres on soils of clay-limestone marl rich in skeletons and fossils. It is the ideal terroir to fully express the character of the old Sangiovese Grosso clones and gives the wine an acidic, spicy profile. Only part of the vineyard parcels are used for this label. Long ageing in 15-hectolitre Allier oak barrels and a resting period in the bottle complete it and prepare it for the market and the challenge of time. Around 5,000 bottles are bottled only in the best vintages.

The wine announces itself with a deep ruby red colour and opens with a seductive bouquet in which ripe cherries and small fruits give way to more complex notes of tobacco, flowers and undergrowth, before fading into spice and citrus peel. The palate is broad, deep and crisp, supported by a rich acidic framework that carries intact fruit and tannins of spectacular finesse. Camartina 2016 has exceptional finesse and elegance. Elegant, deep ruby red. Rich aromas of black and red berries such as black cherry and blueberry, joined by notes of ripe plum and tamarind. Barolo Cerequio comes from vines over 35 years old and is characterised by exuberant aromas and bright, red-coloured fruit. The bouquet is enormously opulent with ripe fruit flavours ranging from wild cherry to redcurrant. There are also original notes of jam, plum and a hint of ragout. "Vietti was able to buy a 9,000 square metre plot of Cerequio from Michele Chiarlo, who is arguably the king of this famous cru. And as it is a new addition to the portfolio, the Vietti team is still familiarising itself with the material. The bouquet of the Barolo Cerequio 2019, for example, reveals a fresh minty note. "This minty note was a mystery to us," says Luca Currado. "But then we realised that it was part of the Cerequio." On the palate, the wine has a firm grip, which expands and has a soft texture, but ultimately remains quite structured. Luca Currado tells me that "Cerequio is the brother and Brunate is the sister" of the La Morra Grand Cru vineyards. Here comes the second vintage of Zerbina's single-vineyard Sangiovese, with which the winery once again proves in a very small edition (< 1,000 bottles) what great Sangiovese Romagna can produce. Dark-fruited, full nose with a cornucopia of dark berry fruits and hints of forest floor, tar and white ash. Firm on the palate, enormously complex, the concentrated fruit gradually opens up with further airing and a Sangiovese work of art is revealed that could not be more typical, pure and at the same time more complex. The pure, autochthonous Nerello Mascalese from over 100-year-old (ungrafted) vines in Contrada Rampante on the northern slopes of Mount Etna at an altitude of 950 metres starts with a sparkling ruby-garnet colour and impressively adds a captivating raspberry aroma, followed by fine spicy notes (ginger, allspice, clove). Compact, dense, fully fruity, tannic on the palate, yet always extremely relaxed, elegant and supple. Traces of salt and flint on the finish. The 2019 Siepi is a stunning wine that appeals to all the senses with just the right amount of complexity. The wine is soft, brooding, velvety and long lasting. The project aims to highlight the link between the vines, the wines and their territorial origins. In this way, the Mastroberardino family wants to recreate the style of winemaking of the autochthonous grape varieties of Irpinia (Greco, Fiano and Aglianico) that took place between the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1970s of the twentieth century for the Taurasi and between the years 1970 and 1980 for the two white wines from Irpinia. It is the unmistakable style (the stilèma) of a family that has interpreted the natural heritage of its territory over generations and today impressively highlights the genuine character of the terroir, which by no means can be expressed by high concentration and intensity alone.

"The Marchesi Antinori 2017 Tignanello (made from Sangiovese and smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) is a dark, lush and inviting wine. I tasted my sample after a double decant and was delighted by the depth of the wine and the immediate openness of the flavours. It is a symphony of dark fruit with black cherry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. I particularly like a distant hint of medicinal or mentholated herbs, which I have detected in other wines with fruit from the Tignanello estate in 2017. There is also a drying mineral note of crushed chalk. The heat and dryness of the vintage have increased the aromatic intensity of the wine (yields were reduced by a third), but the mouthfeel is carefully crafted to maintain its softness and suppleness. The fruit comes from a 57-hectare section of Tenuta Tignanello from a vineyard 390 metres above sea level, composed of Alberese limestone and soils of marine origin." Wine Advocate

Barolo Brunate is a powerful and vertical wine, endowed with enormous explosive energy and intensity. Crushed flowers, mint, spices and dried flowers open up in the glass, but it is the energy of the wine that really lifts it into the stratosphere. In the glass, the 2019 is dark, almost sombre, and full of the sepia-coloured nuances that are so typical of this great Barolo vineyard. 2019 is an outstanding vintage for Brunate and the first with organic certification.
