Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2015
The grapes for this exceptional Chianti Classico come from vines that grow southwest at an altitude of between 350 and 480 metres above sea level. The soil here is characterised by Galestro and limestone. Rich, deep dark ruby with a velvety sheen. Multi-layered, concentrated aromas of plum, black cherry, spices and menthol. Complex on the palate with a multi-faceted flavour profile that only opens up gradually and only reveals its full spectrum to the patient. A parade wine of great depth, class and irresistibility. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, sparkling ruby garnet. Opens with slightly smoky notes, lush cedar, then lots of blackberry and ripe dark cherry, some tobacco in the background. Lush and present in attack and progression, shows lots of juicy, present fruit, opens with fine-meshed, pithy tannin, describes a long arc, good tension." Falstaff
"The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, essentially a selection of the best barrels of Cepparello, is a gorgeous wine. More than anything, the 2015 is remarkable considering the challenges of a growing season in which rain during harvest created significant challenges. Nevertheless, Paolo De Marchi coaxed all of the potential out of his vines in 2015, adding a good dollop of Petit Verdot to the Sangiovese in crafting the Gran Selezione. Dense, powerful and beautifully textured, with intense underpinnings of saline minerality. The 2015 has a brilliant future." Vinous

As a result of extensive soil research, Francesco Ricasoli was able to identify three microlocations, which will be vinified separately from the 2015 vintage onwards. The range of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione now includes, in addition to the famous Castello di Brolio, three cru sites (Colledilà, Roncicone and Ceniprimo), all of which are 100% planted with Sangiovese. They differ in structure and taste in close correspondence with their terroir and impressively demonstrate the complexity of the Chanti Classico region.
The grapes of Colledilà come from the soils of Monte Morello. The 7.6 hectare single-vineyard plot was planted in 2002 on very rocky soils rich in calcium, clay and organic matter. These characteristics give this wine its sharpness and concentration, promising long ageing in the cellar.
Ripe, dark cherry fruit and blackberry aromas, followed by tar, liquorice and potting soil. On the palate, a fine earthiness, cherry and plum, plus finely knit and slightly sweet tannins. The dense fruit and pleasant acid wire the Sangiovese provide the necessary freshness. Masterfully composed! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. Fragrant on the nose, of juicy blood oranges, fresh wild strawberries, cherries, floral in the second echo, distantly reminiscent of stone fruit, inviting and expressive. Shows a very juicy approach and course on the palate, tightly woven tannin supports the expressive fruit, floral and radiant, yet very accessible and with high drinking flow, great Chianti Classico cinema!" Falstaff
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà is another terrific wine in this range from Brolio. It marries energy with depth, showing plenty of nuance as well as character. Dark red cherry/plum fruit, mocha, tobacco, blood orange and incense all run through this deep, fleshy Gran Selezione. The 2019 Colledilà is one of the best wines I have tasted from Brolio in some time." Vinous
"Lots of fresh fruit here, with orange-peel and crushed-berry character. Some crushed stone as well. Full-bodied with integrated tannins that spread across the palate and melt in nicely, making is almost seamless. Better after 2025." James Suckling
"Distinctly savory, this red delivers grassy, thyme and menthol aromas and flavors allied to notes of cherry, strawberry and loam. Angular and dense, with the fruit component emerging with air, this is long, complex and deftly balanced, revealing an aftertaste of cherry, berry, mineral and herbal accents." Wine Spectator
"The Barone Ricasoli 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà exudes an elegant fruit profile, but the wine is not without significant intensity and concentration too. With Sangiovese from clayey limestone soils rich in calcium carbonate and poor in organic matter, this wine also boasts that beautiful minerality that we saw in the others. Delicate berry fruit cedes to crushed oyster shell, dark spice and campfire ash. To the palate, the wine is high, firm and long." Wine Advocate

Ricasoli's classic is now made from 100% Sangiovese. The grapes come from a south-facing plot at an ideal altitude of 250 to 450 metres above sea level. Castello di Brolio Gran Selezione is a wonderful wine with great richness and depth. It has an intense bouquet of small red berries, violets and spices. The flavour reveals precision, structure and freshness. The tannin and acidity are well-balanced and promise a long life and an interesting ageing period. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, medium ruby red with garnet-red reflections. Intense aroma of juicy cherries, orange peel, tobacco leaves and light spices of cinnamon and vanilla. Very elegant on the palate, with beautiful fruit flavours and well-integrated tannins as well as an exciting and persistent final." Falstaff
"Deep carmine red colour. Quite a complex nose. Racy with flavours of tea leaves and good freshness. Good bite. A real, refined Chianti Classico." Jancis Robinson
"This lively red wine shows telltale Sangiovese notes of iron, red chalk and tobacco that fade into a core of cherry and raspberry. It becomes smoother and more focused on the finish, where the fruit, minerals and savoury elements come together." Wine Spectator
"Autumnal aromas of baking spices and the taste of a freshly brewed cup of coffee are balanced by a sweet cherry vanilla biscuit and a peppery note. The cherry brightens the palate, with spice sustained by herbal and stony undertones. Bright acidity plays around firm tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"The Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio is one of the winery's most important and successful bottles. It is full-bodied and rich with warm, vintage flavours of blackberries, juicy cherries, spices and soft earth. It is aged for 22 months in tonneaux, of which only 30% is new oak, but this is more than enough to give this full-bodied Sangiovese spicy tones, soft tannins and a rich structure." Wine Advocate
"Complex bouquet of forest fruits, black pepper and tobacco; has flesh, fullness, skilfully balanced tannins and acidity, long finish. Convinces with its charismatic style." Vinum
"Castello di Brolio is the flagship of the winery and combines Sangiovese from higher-lying vineyards near the castle, planted on the three main soil types found here: Macigno (sandstone), Galestro and Alberese. This 2020 has a balsamic bouquet that is accompanied in the mouth by a rich concentration of flavoursome, tangy red and black fruits and wonderfully silky tannins. Structured enough to age well, but soft and approachable enough to enjoy immediately, it's a great all-rounder." Decanter
"Bright and floral on the nose, with orange blossom and vibrant sliced cherry character. Medium-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins that are supple and gentle. Beautiful aftertaste of cooked peach pie and cherry. Delicious now, but even better in 2028." James Suckling
"Pure Sangiovese from three vineyards around the castle, an expression of three different soils. Black cherry on the nose, with notes of eucalyptus and cinnamon. Spicy tannins on the palate, dense, persistent with a balsamic finish." Luca Gardini

“Badia a Passignano” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019 · Double MAGNUM in OWC
Badia a Passignano is always one of the many highlights of the Antinori range and is probably the winery's most refined and elegant wine. Its character is medium-bodied and supple, but with plenty of fruit intensity typical of the eponymous vineyard. It skilfully treads the middle path of richness and finesse, captivating with the very first sip. Lavender, mint, blue-violet fruits and liquorice are beautifully brought out. It represents a very traditional and noble expression of the Tuscan grape that is hard to resist. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sensual notes of red forest fruits dominate the nose, topped by violet aromas; pithy texture with perfect tannin-acid structure, beautiful length. Character wine with melting that can still mature." Vinum
"Dark ruby red. Deep, sweet cherry aroma with hints of cassis and spicy oak. Intense, concentrated, youthful, tangy, sweet fruit. A little stunning and overpowering, but will probably age well. Fine tannic grip on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is packed with deep dark fruits, chocolate, spices, leather and incense. Opulent and extravagant to the core, the 2019 speaks with a loud, bold voice. It is very rich but lacks finesse." Vinous
"On the nose, lots of violets and blue fruits as well as black cherries. Full-bodied with slightly chewy tannins. Rich and multilayered. Yet the tannins are long and intense. Drinkable after 2023." James Suckling
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano from Marchesi Antinori shows a ripe fruit profile with sweet cherry and baked plum. The wine offers sweet tannins, plenty of dark cherry, spicy sensations, rich fruit weight and a touch of salinity on the finish." Wine Advocate
"Great workmanship in this Gran Selezione type, one of the most reliable in its category. Aged in Hungarian oak, notes of redcurrant on the nose, then rhubarb and undergrowth and a hint of laurel. Fresh and dense tannins on the palate, nice finish." Luca Gardini
"A dense, rich red with aromas of blackberry, bramble and blueberry, with hints of vanilla and toasted oak underlined by minerals and wild herbs. It shows fine balance and texture, with a tannic structure that shows through on the earthy finish, suggesting that this wine will need another two to three years before it comes into its own. A wine for the cellar." Wine Spectator
"The vineyards of Badia a Passignano surround an ancient monastery that has belonged to Benedictine monks since the 11th century. It was owned by Benedictine monks in the 14th century. It lies just 3 km south of Antinori's Tignanello vineyard, from which the Sangiovese vines originate. Youthful, graceful and unencumbered by much oak, it shows lovely floral notes, red cherries and cedar. The tannins are supple and yielding, and the juicy acidity adds to the lightness and clarity of this medium-bodied, elegant Gran Selezione. Bright red berries are interspersed with sage on the palate. Everything is in its place - almost too perfect." Decanter

Limitation of 1 articles per customer“Coltassala” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018 (BIO) · 6 bottles in OWC
Coltassala Gran Selezione is an impeccable representative of the royal class in Chianti Classico. The immensely fragrant bouquet shows black fruits, spices and ploughed earth. All the aromas are on the dark and spicy side, but the wine always remains fresh, dense, buoyant and very linear. Shows rich volume and a strong personality and precision. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Coltassala features a riper fruit profile than is usual here, along with more overt sweetness and oak influence. It has a lot of depth, but less Sangiovese typicity. Chocolate, sweet spices and leather are to the fore. This is a particularly bombastic style that is more about intensity than finesse." Vinous
"Coltassala was originally planted in the late 1990s and is Volpaia's oldest vineyard. The 2.5 ha plot is situated at 535 m altitude on sandstone soil. The Coltassala reveals its ageing in French barriques with initial aromas of coffee, incense and roasted meat, then makes way for the fragrant floral nuances of the Radda. On the palate, the oak comes through well. A creamy texture is accompanied by a lively, refreshing acidity. The rather chalky tannins are assertive and refined, while lilac and lavender accent the finish." Decanter
"This is another very interesting wine from Volpaia, which has now moved up to Grand Selezione. Initially the wine shows an elegant and streamlined personality, but it quickly gains volume with layers of dark fruit and sweet spice. This vintage offers a particularly focused or pungent personality that is a good foreshadowing of its future evolution in bottle." Wine Advocate
"Wonderful scents and freshness with cut flowers, citrus fruits and dark berries. Also violets. Full-bodied and complex with wonderful fruit and clarity. Hints of bark and stone. Also some coniferous wood. Racy and long." James Suckling
"An exceptional Gran Selezione from Volpaia, sourced from the company's most historic clones and plants, a reference point for this typology. Black raspberry on the nose, hints of rhubarb and myrtle, then balsamic eucalyptus. Juicy on the palate, return of the fruit and balsamic sensations, very long lasting." Luca Gardini

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2016
Just 3,000 bottles of the exceptional 2016 vintage were released. The grapes for this exceptional Chianti Classico come from vines that grow in the south-west at an altitude of between 350 and 480 metres above sea level. The soil here is characterised by galestro and limestone. Rich, deep dark ruby colour with a velvety sheen. Multi-layered, concentrated aromas of plum, black cherry, spices and menthol. Complex on the palate with a multi-faceted flavour profile that only opens up gradually and only reveals its full spectrum to the patient. A paragon wine of great depth, class and irresistibility. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep, impenetrable ruby red colour. Brooding, deep and concentrated with hints of oak and dark malt bread. Tightly knit, tangy red and dark fruits with fine, long and persistent tannins. Finely balanced. Transparent and elegant on the finish. Full-blooded." Jancis Robinson
"An intense, vibrant red, with traces of vanilla and toasted, resinous oak surrounding aromas and flavours of black cherries, blackberries, violets and minerals. Balanced, with a resonant finish. Still youthful, with refined, mouth-flattering tannins, this wine still has a long way to go." Wine Spectator
"Intriguing blueberry-chocolate nose, also nuances of black pepper; balanced on the palate with a beautiful polish, the acidity and the tightly woven tannins accurately integrated, combines finesse and great length. Great." Vinum
"Intense and multi-faceted aroma, red raspberry, nutmeg, a hint of wild rosemary and garrigue. The drinkability is juicy, with a return of blackberry and notes of Mediterranean vegetation." Luca Gardini
"This is a beautiful wine that is only produced in the best vintages. The Isole e Olena 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is made from 90% Sangiovese, supplemented by tiny proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The wine is hugely bright and vibrant in this classic vintage with lingering fruit and cherry that remains intact and fresh even when tasted now, five years after harvest. Hints of leather, tar and potting soil gently fill out the back end. This wine promises long and healthy ageing in the future." Wine Advocate
"The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016 is breathtaking. This is hardly a surprise, as Paolo De Marchi is known for making compelling Gran Seleziones in his own unique style. The 2016 is a brilliant, concentrated wine, bursting with energy from start to finish. It is the rare wine that develops superbly in the glass and opens up with time. The blend consists of 90% Sangiovese and a few drops of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah." Vinous

Cru Roncicone comes from soils with maritime deposits. It is a 10.1 hectare plot planted between 1998 and 2000 at a density of 6,000 plants per hectare. The soils are rich in marine fossils with sand at the top and thicker clay under the topsoil. Our impression of this wine is that it is the most immediately and softly structured.
Deep dark, fruity-smoky bouquet. On the palate then dark, violet fruits, paired with notes of forest floor, tobacco and a nice spiciness. The volume is full and deep, the tannins very accessible even at a young age and the finish is flanked by a well-structured acidity framework, which will also ensure a very good ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Roncicone, first released in the 2015 vintage, comes from a vineyard with richer soils with marine sediments and large pebbles. It is the most floral and fragrant of Ricasoli's three crus, intense and fleshy, with good spice of black and red cherries, spices and balsamic, finishing with sweet, floral red fruits - a very nice style." Decanter
"The spicy nose is reminiscent of a soothing café, with notes of balsamic vinegar and herbs, and a gentle fruitiness that lingers over the smell of the beans. The velvety texture on the palate is balanced by a sharp acidity and a peppery kick on the finish." Wine Enthusiast
"Offers aromas and flavours of cherry, blackcurrant and plum, underlined by iron and mineral notes. Accents of tobacco and wild herbs emerge on the long, delicious finish. Excellent balance." Wine Spectator
"Ripe and rich Roncicone with plums, currants and jam accompanied by fresh flowers and walnut undertones. Full-bodied, a little chewy and structured, but crisp with fine tannins. Long lasting finish. Needs at least two or three years to develop." James Suckling
"Exquisite bouquet of stone fruit and sandalwood, spiced up by fine spice; harmonious tannin-acid framework, pressure on the finish and yet full of elegance." Vinum
"This is the wine that blew me away last year (when I tasted the excellent 2019 vintage) and convinced me of the innovative work Barone Ricasoli is currently doing. Today, tasting the 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio Roncicone, I am reminded of the quality fruit that comes from this particular 10-acre site with marine fossils in the sandy topsoil. Carefully aged in oak, this Sangiovese shows brilliant clarity and focus, with aromas of roses, dried cherries, campfire ash and delicate mineral notes. This wine paints a beautiful portrait of this grape variety." Wine Advocate

As a result of extensive soil research, Francesco Ricasoli was able to identify three micro-vineyards, which will be vinified separately from the 2015 vintage onwards.
CeniPrimo is a single-varietal Sangiovese from soils shaped by a former river course. It is a 6.4 hectare site planted in 1998 with southwest exposure. This site is in a valley on the Arbia River, and the soils are very complex at this point with alluvium and clay that is low in organic matter and lower in limestone. From our tasting, it seems to be the most nuanced and diverse of the three single vineyard Gran Selezione.
Intense, fresh and bright bouquet of violets and wild spicy notes. In the drink, an elegant acidity and fine mineral slate traces. Cherry, blackberry, plum, white pepper and a little rosemary lead the perfectly structured drop into a never-ending and multi-layered finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"A complex, concentrated red wine with seductive aromas of cherries, blackcurrants, violets, minerals and spices. Dry and powerful, with a firm, mineral finish. It shows good balance and a long-lasting aftertaste, combining the fruity, mineral and spicy elements." Wine Spectator
"Straightforward fruit and floral aromas, then subtle spice too; the tannins powdery, well underpinned by the acidity, the finish on notes of sun-ripened berries. Pleases with its verve." Vinum
"The CeniPrimo, the lowest of Ricasoli's three crus, comes from a site 300 metres above sea level in the Arbia Valley on river soils. As a result, it is darker and earthier compared to the other two crus, grippier and also with an amazing acidity. There is a hint of creaminess in the background, with notes of earth, pepper and wood. It's very tasty and vertical, with balsamic freshness and beautiful purity, but definitely needs more time to show its best side." Decanter
"The Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio CeniPrimo opens with a medium-dark, saturated appearance and a slightly more concentrated feel, with aromas of cherry liqueur, blackberries, spices and sweet earth. Thanks to the lower-lying vineyards and silty riverbed soils, this wine is a little fruitier and richer in texture. However, this wine also offers a touch of lively freshness on the finish, and that makes a big difference in a warm vintage like this. It remains very balanced throughout." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of firm-to-the-bite cherries with citrus peel. Flowers, like red roses, also come through clearly. Medium to full body, with open-grained tannins that cling like cashmere. Powerful, fresh and lively. Give this wine three to five years to develop." James Suckling

According to our tasting, it appears to be the most nuanced and varied of the three single-vineyard Gran Selezione.
Intense, fresh and bright bouquet of violets and wild spicy notes. Elegant acidity and fine mineral slate traces on the palate. Cherry, blackberry, plum, white pepper and a touch of rosemary lead this perfectly structured wine into a never-ending, multi-layered finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione CeniPrimo 2019 is a very nice wine. The 2019 is bright and translucent, with great energy and has a lot to offer. Sweet floral notes, kirsch, spices, rose petals and French oak are all beautifully emphasised. I really like the energy of this wine." Vinous
"Bold and rich, this has an enticing black cherry and chocolate aroma, with notes of damp earth and potpourri. The dark fruits are ripe and almost sticky in the mouth, lifted by floral top-notes and dried fruit flavours, and finishing with a depth of tapenade and earthiness." Decanter
"Super spicy from the aromas to the finish, this red wine is supple and taut. It offers flavours of strawberries, currants, cherries and earth, peppery spices and a hint of vanilla on the powerful finish. Although delicate, it is not lacking in intensity." Wine Spectator
"Barone Ricasoli has succeeded in emphasising the individual character of each of its Gran Selezione wines. The fruit in this sample comes from sandy and silty soils in the Val d'Arbia at lower altitudes (between 280 and 300 metres above sea level). The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio CeniPrimo 2019 is a structured and concentrated wine with generous layers of dark fruits, spices, earth and candied cherries. CeniPrimo focuses on dark fruits and texture." Wine Advocate
"This wine has an intensely perfumed nose with aromas of lavender, sandalwood, dried cherries, blueberries, crème de cassis, bay leaves, walnuts and stones. Full-bodied with polished, well-integrated tannins and a multi-layered, silky and concentrated core of spiced and herbal fruit. Long. Intense. Already fantastic now, but try it in 2024." Ripe, dark cherry fruit and blackberry aromas, followed by tar, liquorice and potting soil. On the palate, a fine earthiness, cherry and plum, plus finely knit and slightly sweet tannins. The dense fruit and pleasant acid wire the Sangiovese provide the necessary freshness. Masterfully composed! SUPERIORE.DE
"Like a laser beam in profile, this red wine evokes aromas and flavours of cherries, currants, minerals, wild herbs and sweet spices. The lingering, incisive finish leaves a hint of fine tannins. Needs time." Wine Spectator
"Juicy, ripe and bright, it shows a delicious freshness of blackcurrant fruit with classic chalky verticality and length, but it needs more time to reveal all its complexity." Decanter
"Of these 2020 releases, I think the Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà is the most sensitive to the warm growing season. You sense more fruit ripeness in this wine with savoury spices, leather and roasted espresso beans. There is plenty of plum and purple fruit framed by gravel and campfire ash. Indeed, this 2020 expression offers a nice, balanced freshness in terms of mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"Intense perfume of stone fruit, dark chocolate and tobacco; tightly woven, the tannins polished and in perfect unison with the well-integrated acidity, the finish on notes of black cherries, clear and spot-on. Also very successful in this vintage." Vinum
"Very perfumed with aromas of hibiscus flowers, citrus and fresh cherries leading to a medium body with layers of fruit and very fine tannins that go on and on. Fully integrated. A joy to taste and drink, but it will develop beautifully in bottle. Pure harmony." James Suckling
"Elegantly bright ruby red with a delicate garnet rim. Expressive nose, of rose hips, blood oranges, fresh cherries, very inviting and fragrant, red peach, with delicate floral components. Very juicy entry on the palate, polished and clear, with great brought out red fruit, plus bright spice, long and very elegant." Falstaff

Chianti Classico La Casuccia from a single vineyard of the same name with Gran-Selezione status combines in its typical way exemplary excellent structure with highest elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

Round and extremely supple at the base and in the course, it blooms beautifully, opens with fine, elegant tannins, rich draught, lots of dark berry fruit, very long aftertaste". Falstaff
"The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia is opulent and voluptuous with thick lines of dark fruit and spice that characterize the bouquet. More than heft and power, this wine delivers excellent complexity with layers of black truffle, grilled herb and cherry cola that add vertical lift." Wine Advocate

“Vigneto Grospoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018 (BIO) · 6 bottles in OWC
Grospoli comes from the vineyard of the same name on ancient terraces, cultivated in the archaic form of the Lamolian alberello. The sandy soils of the Chianti massif, the constant exposure to the wind and the pure light create the ideal conditions for a lyrical and enchanting wine.
Bright ruby red. Impressive bouquet of violets and iris overlapping with notes of small red and black berries, aromatic herbs and sweet spices. On the palate, powerful and of excellent structure, very stimulating also its freshness and spiciness, which spreads into the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Charismatic bouquet of cherries, blossoms and leather; juicy on the palate, vivid acidity that also enlivens the final, notes of red berries on the finish that round off the performance. Shows elegance." Vinum
"Rich ruby red. In the nose first after butter biscuits, then after juicy heart cherries, reminiscent of spruce honey, in the reverberation after raspberries and dried rose petal. On the palate juicy, radiant, shows great nerve in the course, long and with pressure, currently still young, will settle down very well." Falstaff
"A thoroughly delicious Chianti Classico with plum, bark and light chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with round, caressing tannins and a juicy finish. It’s all about softness." James Suckling
"This is a new submission from Lamole di Lamole, located in the mountains at the back of Greve in Chianti. The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Grospoli is a certified organic Sangiovese that shows medium-rich density, lovely freshness and consistency. This single-vineyard expression reveals clarity and linearity with focused aromas of strawberry, ripe raspberry and crushed mineral tones." Wine Advocate
"From a vineyard of good altitude, on a soil characterised by Chianti massif elements, a pure Sangiovese with notes of black raspberry, then marjoram and carob hints. The mouthfeel is brackish-sapid, with officinal return and undergrowth touches, density and crispness." Luca Gardini

“Il Caggio IPSUS” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018
With this single-vineyard Sangiovese, the Mazzei family pursues no less a goal than to make the best wine in the Chianti Classico appellation. Seven different Sangiovese clones, four of them from their own 50 years of research, form the basis for a Gran Selezione that is produced at an altitude of up to 350 m in the single vineyard Il Caggio not far from Castellina (and only in the best vintages).
Just 3,000 bottles point the way to the Sangiovese Olympus: Sparkling ruby red, opulent bouquet of cherry, dried fruit, herbs and violets. On the palate again small red berries, flanked by a present but very elegant tannin, precise and straightforward. The final is polished and very long, perfectly proportioned and harmonious. Leaves a beautiful and unique impression, it expands the standard of what one could expect from a Gran Selezione until today. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with delicately lightening rim. Fragrant nose of cedar wood, cherries, fine marzipan, a hint of dried rose petal. Opens polished and clear on the palate, in addition exciting, salty tones, compact acidity with delicately perceptible wood use decorate the bouquet, appears very energetic and radiant, will age well." Falstaff
"The Caggio 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ipsus, out now, unfolds slowly in the glass to reveal dark fruits, cassis, spices, cured leather and pressed blue flowers. A hint of something exotic like bay leaf or a touch of roasted cumin. The finish is silky and very smooth, and this wine is longer in the mouth and more finely crafted compared to the 2016 vintage I tasted at the same time." Wine Advocate
"Very perfumed with roses and other flowers. Also Spanish cedar. Medium body with creamy and fine but round tannins that continue for minutes. Super fine texture. Juicy fruit. Juicy and so beautiful. Hard not to drink it now. In fact, do. But it will also age beautifully. Vineyards of 30 years or more." James Suckling
"This 2018 brilliantly combines the darker fruit of 2016 with the mega-freshness of 2015, finishing it off with super-fine tannins. Creamy, earthy and chocolatey notes are lifted by a balsamic waft, overlaid with ripe, sapid red and black cherries, a touch of black tea and a long, sweet, pure cherry and wild strawberry finish. Superb." Decanter

"Bright, sparkling ruby red colour. Expressive and inviting on the nose, fresh wild strawberries, blood oranges, with fine floral notes and a finish of ripe red peach, elegant, barely perceptible use of wood. Extremely polished and elegant on the palate, spans a wide, juicy arc, many layers, gentle, persistent pressure, fine saltiness on the finish with a long finish." Falstaff
"The Caggio 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ipsus is a beautiful expression of Sangiovese. The wine captures the slightly wild and untamed side of the grape that is so compelling, but it also focuses on elegance and nuance. At first glance, the bouquet reveals an abundance of wild berries and wild cherries, but taste the glass a second and third time and you may pick up more decisive notes of crushed stone and granite. The wine is lean and streamlined, with pretty floral flourishes and a long, silky finish. More than anything, the Ipsus captures the purity and honesty of Sangiovese with a finely polished and lean mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ipsus 2016 is the second vintage from the Caggio estate of the Mazzei family in Castellina. The soaring aromas immediately herald a Sangiovese of true distinction and class. There is something wild and seductive about Ipsus that is difficult to describe. It is at once incredibly polished and yet also very assertive. Crushed flowers, cherry, pomegranate, blood orange, star anise and cinnamon add layers of exoticism as the 2016 opens in the glass. The 2016 is deep, full of character and incredibly long-lasting. This ambitious new wine from Mazzei will certainly be fascinating to follow." Vinous
"The fruit element is pure and reminiscent of blackcurrants and black cherries, paired with a spicy side that features notes of wild rosemary, iron, tobacco and eucalyptus. All of this is held together by a lively acidity and refined tannins. A convincing combination of power and finesse." Wine Spectator
"Super perfumed, wonderful aromas of blackberries, mushrooms and bark with dried flowers and crushed stones. Also pine needles and flowers. Full-bodied and linear, very dense and long. Very polished and intense. Great length. Outstanding. From the heart of Castellina in Chianti. Try it after 2025, but it already shows incredible clarity and concentration." James Suckling
"Lots of red cherry is accompanied by a whiff of wood smoke and dried green tea, followed by similar flavours on the palate. The acidity is vibrant and crunchy, the fine-grained tannins still firm. A pure expression of Sangiovese; an elegant wine." Decanter

"As always at this young stage, the wood notes accompany the fine and bright fruit; the strengths lie in the inner tension, the elegance, the solid style of the fine tannin and the eternal length. Confirms the upward trend of this great classic, which has been organically farmed since 2000." Weinwisser
"Charismatic attack of cherries and black pepper, delicately tinged with liquorice notes; the tannins youthful, the acidity perfectly integrated, plenty of richness and power through to the long complex final." Vinum
"The organic Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala 2019 is 95% Sangiovese with a tiny 5% Mammolo. The production is 9,000 bottles in this vintage. The wine shows medium fruit weight with a nice blend of creamy black fruits, Christmas spices and crushed stone or granite. The wine is both fruity and contemporary." Wine Advocate
"Bright ruby red. In the nose initially fine mint, some fruit tea, also fine liquorice, in the aftertaste of ripe blackberries and cardamom. On the palate with clear, radiant fruit, tense powerful tannin, also on the palate with ripe berry fruit, in the final with delicate earthy-spicy nuances, grippy." Falstaff
"Aromas of black cherries and citrus fruits with some graphite and smoke. Medium-bodied with firm, juicy tannins that are still chewy now but will soften with age. Racy and long on the finish. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling
"Lovely cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavours take centre stage in this graceful red wine. Lively and elegant, with well-integrated tannins and a long, supple, mineral finish. In about 5 to 6 years, this wine will be truly charming." Wine Spectator
"An exceptional Gran Selezione from Volpaia, sourced from the winery's historic vines and clones. On the nose, red raspberries, hints of rhubarb and juniper, then balsamic eucalyptus. Salty-sweet on the palate, with a fruity finish and balsamic notes, very long lasting." Luca Gardini

“Coltassala” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020 (BIO) · 6 bottles in OWC
Every year, Coltassala is a red wine that offers all the essentials - and in impeccable style. On the nose, black fruits, spices and ploughed earth. All the flavours are dark and spicy, but the wine remains fresh, dense, lively and very linear. The ageing in new oak gives it a modern touch without overpowering it. Coltassala 2020 is noble and refined from start to finish, and it is one of the great Chianti Classico Gran Selezione! SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red with garnet-red rim brightening. Dense nose, characterised by wood ageing, lots of cigar box and tobacco, with fully ripe plums behind it. Lively and balanced on the palate, dark minerality, reminiscent of grated pencil, ripe tannins and a long, salty final." Falstaff
"A fresh, herbal yet earthy nose pulls a light sweetness from notable cherry undercurrents, which are emphasized on the palate by a creamsicle swirl of orange and vanilla, but the lightly metallic, medicinal herbaceousness works with polished tannins and vibrant acid to create a streamlined, balanced feel." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala is a sleek, elegant wine. Silky contours and sweet floral notes lend finesse to this very pretty, nuanced Gran Selezione. All the elements are very nicely balanced. Hints of black cherry, plum, licorice and leather lend darkness throughout." Vinous
"Nicely balanced overall, the Volpaia 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala offers an earthy side that gives nice context to forest berry and wild cherry. There are floral notes as well, especially violet and iris, and the wine maintains a firm, medium-weight texture to the palate." Wine Advocate
"Saturated with black currant, black cherry, iron and wild herb aromas and flavors, this red is firmly structured and shows fine harmony already in its youth. The supple texture is offset by well-integrated, dusty tannins, while the fruit echoes on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"Very attractive with ripe cherries, red plums, dark chocolate and spices with hints of dried lavender and citrus peel. Medium-bodied with lots of energy and tension. Tannins are polished and well-integrated to the wine. Very complete and balanced. Crunchy and long." James Suckling

“Vigneto Bellavista” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2011 · MAGNUM in gift box
The 2011 edition of the Gran Selezione from the Bellavista vineyard is rich and dark with aromas of wild cherry, smoke, liquorice, menthol and tobacco. Extremely attractive and full-bodied on the palate, firm tannins form the backbone of this virile, potent wine. SUPERIORE.DE
"Full, dark ruby, light violet shimmer. Opened in the nose with fine spicy notes, to sandalwood, some vanilla, then full of plums. In the beginning much present fruit, opens with dense, hearty tannin, discreet earthy notes, in the finale long reverberation, fine and elegant." Falstaff
"The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista opens to dark concentration, bold intensity and an immediate delivery of ripe fruit flavors. Stylistically speaking, this single-vineyard Grand Selezione is extracted, muscular and extremely fruit forward. The heat of the 2011 vintage comes through loud and clear. Happily, the mouthfeel is tighter and more focused with dusty minerality on the tannins and long persistency." Wine Advocate
"Ama's 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista shows the darker, more brooding style of Sangiovese at Ama. Graphite, smoke, tar, licorice, incense and cloves wrap around a core of dark fruit. A wine of gravitas and vertical structure, the 2011 will reward several decades of cellaring. This is an unusually stern wine for the vintage though. Readers will have to be patient to experience the Bellavista at its best. Still, I can't help notice how much the 2011 has grown in bottle over the last year." Antonio Galloni
"Rich and elegant, with black cherry, black currant, violet and boysenberry flavors allied to a sleek frame. Dense and weightless at once, with a lingering aftertaste of tobacco and tea. Presents a fine balance and aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"A fresh and layered red with blackberry, blueberry and mint character. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Minerally." James Suckling

This wine will continue to unfold its complex nuances for at least a few decades. Fantastic depth and energy. "The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto San Marcellino is a dazzling, explosive wine characterised by its aromatic presence, intensity of colour and overall depth. Dark red and purple fruits, exoticism, spice and leather are boldly outlined in this vibrant, stunning Chianti Classico that comes to life in the glass. The tannins are there, but they are almost masked by the sheer richness of the fruit. What a stunningly beautiful wine this is. After three warm vintages, the 2013 was a welcome change." Vinous

"A broad, dense red wine with aromas of ripe plums, black cherries and blackberries, framed by lively acidity and powerful tannins. Accents of earth, red chalk and tobacco intermingle. All components are properly proportioned, but it will take some time to fully integrate. Nice length and freshness. Best from 2022." Wine Spectator
"A selection from the San Marcellino vineyard, which includes a plot of 50-year-old vines. The soil here is extremely stony and consists mainly of Alberese - a hard marl rich in calcium carbonate that tends to produce deeply coloured wines. This wine has a lot going for it. Tantalising red and blackcurrants are underpinned by toasty aromas and spice. The palate is rich and mouth-filling without being heavy, with velvety structured tannins. The purity of the fruit is maintained throughout and the wine finishes with a delicious salinity." Decanter
"The Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino 2015 is fabulous. Sweet red cherry, red plum, mint, sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, liquorice, blood orange and dried herbs race from the glass. Sangiovese is so expressive. Yet the 2015 is a wine of restraint. I would cellar it for at least a couple of years, as it has clearly closed up after bottling. Its energy and vivacity are remarkable." Vinous

“Roncicone” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019 · 6 bottles in OWC
As a result of extensive soil analyses, Francesco Ricasoli was able to identify three micro-vineyards, which will be vinified separately from the 2015 vintage onwards. In addition to the famous Castello di Brolio, the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione range now includes three cru sites (Colledilà, Roncicone and Ceniprimo), all of which are planted 100% with Sangiovese. In close correspondence with their terroir, they differ in structure and flavour and impressively demonstrate the complexity of the Chanti Classico region.
Cru Roncicone comes from soils with maritime deposits. It is a 10.1 hectare plot that was planted between 1998 and 2000 with a density of 6,000 plants per hectare. The soils are rich in marine fossils with sand at the top and thicker clay beneath the topsoil. Our impression of this wine is that it is the most immediate and softly structured.
Deep dark, fruity and smoky bouquet. Dark, violet-coloured fruit on the palate, paired with notes of forest floor, tobacco and a beautiful spiciness. The volume is full and deep, the tannins very accessible even at a young age and the finish is flanked by a well-structured acidity framework, which will also ensure very good ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Roncicone 2019 shows the more ethereal side of Sangiovese in this vintage. Sweet red cherries, mint, crushed stones, orange peel and rose water give it a remarkable aromatic brilliance. The Roncicone captivates with its medium-bodied, translucent personality and offers plenty of intensity." Vinous
"This spicy red wine presents itself with an explosion of bright cherry fruit, along with notes of strawberries, redcurrants, eucalyptus and tobacco. It shows an underlying minerality and dusty tannins that are present on the finish. All components are present." Wine Spectator
"Earthy forest scents accompany hedgerow berries and violet tones, with a clear petrichor note. The fine tannins allow the intensity of the juicy red and black fruits to shine through. It has a beautiful freshness with an almost mentholated character that, combined with the dense and tangy finish, gives it a sense of verticality." Decanter
"The aromas and structure of this single-vineyard Chianti Classico are something special this year. The flavours of orange peel, meat and cherries are lively and vibrant. It has a medium body with firm, chewy tannins that are dusty and fine-grained. Structured and robust with a granite-like presence. Try it after 2025, but it will impress you." James Suckling
"The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio Roncicone 2019 reflects soils rich in shells and marine fossils. These conditions provide sharpness and focus with beautiful minerality, both salty and chalky. At first glance, this Sangiovese is textbook, slender and elegant. The bouquet is refined and multi-layered with wild cherry, mint, blue flowers and blood orange. There is also a hint of rust, and the mouthfeel is polished and very fine. The tannins melt away. Francesco Ricasoli assures me that he and his team have learnt to "work the grapes". I would definitely say that. The results are stunning." Wine Advocate

As a result of extensive soil research, Francesco Ricasoli was able to identify three micro-vineyards, which will be vinified separately from the 2015 vintage onwards.

Deep dark, fruity-smoky bouquet. On the palate then dark, violet fruits, paired with notes of forest floor, tobacco and a nice spiciness.
