Here comes one of Italy's favourite rosati: bright salmon pink, with a nose of peach, berries and hints of cherry. The flavourful finish is crisp and fruity. The "Anniversario" comes from vines that are around 50 years old and is the house's top Rosato. It was vinified for the first time in 1993 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Five Roses. Salice Salentino “50° Vendemmia” Riserva DOC 2021
What began in 2004 as an anniversary wine for the 50th harvest of Salice Salentino – leone de Castris has been producing this Apulian classic since 1954 – has become a firm tradition due to its resounding success. Since then, a new edition of the "50° Vendemmia" has been released every year. A Riserva that shows how Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera find their powerful yet elegant expression on the red soils of Salento. After selective harvest, the blend of 90% Negroamaro and 10% Malvasia Nera di Lecce undergoes an 8 to 12-day maceration at a controlled temperature of 20 to 22 degrees before the wine matures for twelve months in 30-hectolitre oak barrels. “Colpo di Zappa” Primitivo Gioia del Colle DOC 2021
Gioia del Colle is an Italian municipality near Bari and probably the most famous DOC for Primitivo wines. The wines from this appellation embody a straightforward, fresh style and are far removed from the usual jammy suspects. The vines here grow at altitudes of up to 450 metres above sea level, the nights are cooler here than elsewhere in Apulia and the wines have a racier, tighter style and more structure than their namesakes.

!["Per Lui" Rosso Salento IGT 2019]()
“Per Lui” Rosso Salento IGT 2019
An amazingly drinkyOttavianello that captures the wild character of Salento in a subtle way. The grapes come from old vines, selectively harvested and matured in barriques for twelve months. The colour in the glass is a light ruby with a transparent shimmer - light, yet full of expression. The nose is characterised by sour cherry, rosehip and delicate violet blossom, accompanied by spicy notes such as cinnamon and clove. Clear and fresh on the palate, with present but delicate acidity and silky tannins. The finish remains elegant, with spicy echoes and Mediterranean minerality. A bold representative of an almost forgotten grape variety - stylish, unusual, independent. For all those who are looking for the real thing and want to enjoy something beyond the usual. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Donna Lisa" Salice Salentino Riserva DOC 2020]()
“Donna Lisa” Salice Salentino Riserva DOC 2020
The Donna Lisa vineyard is located in the heart of Salice Salentino. The Negroamaro vines are planted in the Pugliese Alberello – the old bush vine training style, which forces each vine to stand on its own. Around 7,000 vines per hectare, on average fifty years old. Those who have been standing in the Salento soil for so long have learnt to make a lot out of a little. Hand-picked at the end of September, maceration at a controlled temperature for at least 13 days, malolactic fermentation, then transferred to French barriques in spring – maturation for around 18 months, followed by at least six months in the bottle.

“Per Lui” Primitivo del Salento IGT 2020
The Per Lui line does not begin in the cellar, but already on the vine. Before the harvest begins, the berry stalk of each bunch is tied off on the plant – the flow of juice is interrupted and the berry dries in a controlled manner on the living vine. An old Salento trick, here refined into a method: maximum concentration without a drying room, without intervention, just sun and time. 100% Primitivo, Alberello pugliese, argillo-limoso – loamy-silty soil that stores heat and releases it evenly. Vines around 35 years old, harvested in the second decade of September. Maceration for at least 20 days at a controlled 26–28°C, followed by several years in the bottle – no wood, only fruit.

“Per Lui” Salice Salentino Riserva DOC 2017
A wonderfully mature Salice Salentino with character and depth: "Per Lui" Salice Salentino Riserva comes from selected Negroamaro plots that are deeply rooted in the iron-rich soils around Salice. The long maturation in wood - partly barrique, partly tonneau - gives the wine density and expression without jeopardising its balance. Dark ruby red in the glass with a light garnet-red rim. The aroma is warm and complex: black cherry, plum, dried herbs, some tobacco and a hint of cedar. Structured and powerful on the palate, with well-integrated tannins, juicy fruit and a spicy finish. An elegant, mature Salice Salentino that shows its finer, more serious side - very much in the style of the great wines of southern Puglia. SUPERIORE.DE

The winery Leone de Castris represents 350 years of intensive wine history. The foundation stone for the Apulian winery was laid by Duke Oronzo Arcangelo Maria Francesco, Count of Lemos. He was enchanted by the Salento landscape, sold all his land in Spain and settled in the small municipality of Salice Salentino. In the course of time, the winery, still family-run today, has managed to conquer a firm place in the wine world of Apulia and the whole of Italy. The red, rosé and white drops of the house are highly appreciated by wine connoisseurs all over the world. Since the end of the nineties Piernicola Leone de Castris has managed the 500 hectare estate, which also includes olive groves, wheat fields and pastures. In recognition of his merits, the winery was named by the Sommelier-Union Italy as a "Best Wine Producer of the Year 2011" awarded.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Piero and Lisetta Leone de Castris were the first companies in the region to start bottling their own wines in 1925, having exported draught wines to the USA, Germany and France. At the end of the Second World War, in 1943, the Five Roses, the first Rosé bottle wine in Italy, was produced in two versions today. The good wine was often ordered at that time by the allied troops. Today, Leone de Castris' wide range consists of almost thirty modern wines of an impressively reliable quality, which reflect current market trends as well as the reputation and terroir of the area. At the top of the bottle battery, in addition to the two Five Roses variants, is often the Salice Salentino Rosso Donna Lisa Riserva, which is aged in small new wooden barrels, and, most recently, the two autochthonous grape variety wines of the "Per Lui"-series.
The vineyards, mostly located between Salice Salentino, Campi and Guagnano, are fertilized exclusively with natural, organic substances and cultivated by experienced hands. In addition to traditional grape varieties such as Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, Primitivo and Susumaniello, international grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Chardonnay and others) are also cultivated. Some of the fruit processed very conscientiously in the cellar is supplied by long-standing and reliable partners. The Leone de Castris winery also has a museum where visitors can discover the most important stages of the company and the Apulian wine culture, as well as a romantic hotel ("Villa Donna Lisa") with an attached restaurant. SUPERIORE.DE
"Despite its venerable age, the estate of the Leone de Castris family owns a state-of-the-art winery. It ejects some of the best drops of Apulia." Hugh Johnson.
