Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2023
Val di Suga is the only winery in the whole of Montalcino that has vineyards on all three important slopes of the denomination – north-west, south-east, south-west. Three exposures, three soil types, three microclimates. The basic Rosso is the direct expression of this diversity: a cuvée from young vines from all three sites, which unites the breadth of the territory in an accessible, lively wine. Bright ruby red in the glass. The nose reveals fresh red fruit, Morello cherry and a hint of orange peel – lively and precise. Fresh and round on the palate, with light tannins and a juicy, animating finish. A wine for everyday drinking – but with the origin you can taste. SUPERIORE.DE

“Vigna Spuntali” Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2021
Vigna Spuntali is located in the south-west of Montalcino, at 300 metres, less than 30 kilometres from the sea. This is no small matter. Where other locations are characterised by continental influences, the Mediterranean reigns here: dry heat, constant ventilation, salty breeze. Olive trees, myrtle, rosemary, sea lilacs – the Mediterranean maquis begins just behind the vines. The soil consists of sandy soils of weathered Pietraforte rock, well drained, rich in minerals, warm. Sangiovese Grosso thrives here unlike anywhere else in Montalcino – riper, more voluminous, with an iodised sea breeze on the finish that is unmistakable. The Rosso Vigna Spuntali is a new chapter in the Val di Suga portfolio: a single-vineyard Rosso that expresses the character of this exceptional terroir directly and without detours. Hand-picked in the morning, fermentation lasts twelve days, followed by a ten-day post-fermentation phase. Ageing: six months in 40-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels, then twelve months in concrete vats – an ageing process that preserves freshness and develops depth at the same time. Twelve months of bottle ageing complete the circle.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021
Montalcino is a hill. To be more precise: a single large cone of limestone, marl, slate and sand that rises above the Val d'Orcia – exposed to the north, south-east and south-west, characterised by three completely different climates. Most of the producers in the appellation have access to one of these slopes. Val di Suga has all three. Vigna del Lago in the north-west, Poggio al Granchio in the south-east, Vigna Spuntali in the south-west. Three soils, three microclimates, three characters – and a single winery that unites them all under one roof. The basic Brunello is the result of this unique position: a cuvée from all three sites that does not aim for simplification, but for synthesis. Fermentation takes eight to twelve days at a controlled temperature, with maceration lasting a further two to three weeks. Maturation in traditional 50-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months, followed by six months in concrete and then the bottle. The 2021 vintage brought a late frost in April – the harvest was reduced, the quality concentrated. A dry summer without extreme heat, a long, even autumn. The Consorzio and a jury of eight Masters of Wine agreed on three words to characterise the vintage: fragrant, precise, vertical.

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna del Lago” DOCG 2018
In the past, the northern slope of Montalcino was not planted with vines, but was cultivated with cereals, olives and cherries. In this area influenced by the Apennines, the seasons are more pronounced, continental and the north wind significantly lowers the temperature in winter. It is therefore the coldest Brunello region at this time of year, but also the wettest. This northern slope is a gentle hill: a characteristic that is more reminiscent of the Crete Senesi area, right next door, than the two stiffer, steeper and warmer southern slopes of Montalcino.

Brunello di Montalcino “Poggio al Granchio” DOCG 2021
Anyone who knows the south-east of Montalcino knows: no sea breezes, no proximity to the lake, no soft light. Monte Amiata reigns supreme here – the extinct volcano in the background, which breaks the winds, intensifies the temperature fluctuations between day and night and gives the soil its unmistakable character: Galestro slate, gritty, barren, rich in minerals. Oaks and holm oaks stand between the vines, where elsewhere cypresses or olive trees characterise the landscape. Poggio al Granchio – the "crab hill" – lies at 380 to 450 metres, south-east exposure, the historical heart of the appellation. Val di Suga acquired this vineyard in 1999, thus completing a triangle that no other producer in Montalcino possesses. The grapes are harvested by hand in crates, in micro-zones, and the optical selection is uncompromising. In the cellar: fermentation for ten to fourteen days, followed by intensive post-fermentation maceration at 30 degrees for twenty to twenty-five days – this is where extract, density and colour are created. 2021 was particularly favourable for the Poggio al Granchio. The Monte Amiata influence mitigated the dryness of the summer, while the long autumn ensured even ripeness.

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna del Lago” DOCG 2021
A lake next to the vineyard – this is not a metaphor, this is geography. Vigna del Lago is located in the north-west of Montalcino, at 280 metres above sea level, and the small lake that gives the vineyard its name softens the otherwise continental climate of this exposure: harsh winters, very hot summers, pronounced day-night temperature fluctuations. The soil is clay – heavy, watery and cool. A combination that forces the Sangiovese Grosso to take deep root, mature slowly and develop elegance rather than mass. The vine material is the densest in the entire Val di Suga portfolio: 7,500 vines per hectare – a figure reminiscent of the planting densities in Burgundy. Double spur cordon, careful foliage management, yield reduction through thinning out. Hand-picking into crates takes place exclusively in the early hours of the morning. In the cellar: fermentation for eight to twelve days, maceration for a further two to three weeks. Maturation in 40-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months, then concrete, then bottle. No barrique, no wood pressure – pure site. 2021 was a lucky vintage for Vigna del Lago. The late frost in April reduced the harvest – and concentrated the best. No extreme summer, no stress.

A perfectly trimmed avenue of cypresses frames the historic winery, founded in 1969 on a piece of farmland and owned by the famous Angelini family since 1994. Val di Suga is one of the few wineries whose unique status in Montalcino is defined by exceptional Brunello site wines. A meticulous production philosophy reigns here, clearly expressing the stylistics of the vineyards located both north and south of the hill town. The estate covers 51 hectares, all planted with Sangiovese Grosso.
The three hillside sites, with diverse soils, exposures, altitudes and their climatic conditions, produce three completely different interpretations of Sangiovese, testifying to the oenological uniqueness of the winery. We are talking about the three cru wines Vigna del Lago, Poggio al Granchio and Vigna Spuntali. The former owes its name to a nearby lake that provides an exceptionally mild and cool microclimate. Located northeast of Montalcino, the vines grow on the oldest vineyards of the winery on a predominantly clay soil. Poggio del Granchio refers to the second site wine, whose grapes are harvested near Sant'Antimo, southeast of Montalcino. The slate soil there, called Galestro, is considered one of the best soils anywhere for growing Sangiovese. The third cru, Vigna Spuntali, comes from a southwestern vineyard with skeletal, limestone bedrock from the area around Sant'Angelo in Colle. The area has a very typical Mediterranean climate due to its proximity to the sea, which gives particular strength to the wines.
The grapes from each vineyard are processed quite individually in terms of harvest date, fermentation temperature, maceration and aging time. Finally, for the basic Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, all three vineyards are blended together, creating a unique balance of structure and elegance.
The enormous territorial diversity of the growing area is thus clearly in the foreground at Val di Suga: the noble Sangiovese grape variety is known to be particularly sensitive to different soils. The diverse flavor profiles show how the grape variety develops in very different ways depending on the subsoil and microclimate, and so each site Brunello tells its own story.
"The three different sites are our strength," reports farm manager Andrea Lonardi, who has been in charge of Val di Suga since 2012 and, together with oenologist Pietro Riccobono, has designed this territorial vision. The wines follow in their making the classic, traditional Brunello style, which in addition has a contemporary and high quality character. Not without reason they are among the most sought-after Brunello wines in the world. SUPERIORE.DE
