Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2024
Uccelliera's Rosso di Montalcino slowly comes to life with a beguiling blend of mentholated herbs, pine shavings and dried strawberries. It glides over the palate with a texture of pure silk, caressing everything it touches with ripe red fruits and rosy flowers accompanied by a lively acidity. Structured, powerful and long on the final – as always, it far exceeds its weight class and is a top-class Rosso di Montalcino. SUPERIORE.DE

Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva 2025
Uccelliera | Tuscany
Long before Andrea Cortonesi bottled his first Brunello, his family cultivated the olive groves around Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The cultivation of olives is part of the very fabric of life here – rooted in the same soil from which his wines come. Classic Tuscan varieties: Frantoio brings structure and flavour, Moraiolo the dark fruit and depth, Leccino the smoothness on the finish. The grapes are harvested by hand in November when the fruit is still firmly attached to the branch – cold pressing immediately afterwards, without delay.

“Rapace” Rosso Toscana IGT 2023
Uccelliera is not only famous for its outstanding Brunello every year, the Rapace, which has now become an icon, also demonstrates the high quality with which the winery has been delighting wine connoisseurs all over the world for decades. Deep dark ruby red in colour, the aroma spectrum is skilfully balanced with a mix of dark red cherries, plums, liquorice, smoke, spices and menthol. The beautifully cherry-like primary fruit is embedded in a warm texture, the silky tannin skilfully takes over on the sidelines and the wine storms into a long, nuanced and delicately mineral finish. Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
Here is one of the most classic Brunello of the 2018 vintage: the dose of primary fruit such as cherry and blackberry is marvellous and rich, flanked by well-dosed hints of oak, wild herbs, cinnamon and dark smoke. This Brunello maintains its high tempo from start to finish, it is generous, concentrated, firm and fleshy on the palate and leads into a multi-layered, phenomenal final. This red will unfold its full bloom over the next few years; it is undisputedly one of the greats of this vintage! SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020
Andrea Cortonesi's Brunello di Montalcino 2020 shows its best side right from the start; it is a Brunello of broodingbeauty, intensity and complexity. The nose is characterised by a generous dose of primary fruit, primarily cherry and blackberry. This is complemented by wonderfully balanced secondary flavours from the oak, reminiscent of spices, cinnamon and dark smoke. On the palate, it explodes from the starting line and delivers a steady pace throughout. Subtle notes of spice and barbecue smoke add further facets to the impressive finish. SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
Podere Uccelliera is located on the south-eastern slope of the hill of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where the view falls on the extinct volcano Monte Amiata and the breeze from the Orcia Valley blows through the vineyards. Not a large estate, not a marketing machine. Nine hectares, one man, one idea of wine. Andrea Cortonesi comes from a Mezzadria family that cultivated these lands for generations, long before Brunello was a word the world knew. In 1986, he bought the old Podere – with centuries-old olive trees, half a hectare of vines and the firm intention of creating something lasting here. He had previously worked at Ciacci Piccolomini, Poggio di Sotto and Mastrojanni – as a cellar master, as an observer, as a learner. What he took with him was not a recipe. It was a flair. He vinified his first Brunello in 1991.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2021
Castelnuovo dell'Abate has its own character – rougher, denser, more mineral than many other corners of the appellation. The clayey-sandy soils with their high proportion of skeleton, the altitudes between 150 and 350 metres, the lee of Monte Amiata, the cool nights from the Orcia Valley: anyone who plants vines here gets Sangiovese with attitude. Andrea Cortonesi has been planting here for almost four decades. 2021 demanded a lot from this terroir – and the winegrower – a lot. The late frost in April hit the lower vineyards hard and the harvest was around 15 per cent smaller than the previous year. A hot, dry summer followed before two rainfalls in the second half of August gave the vineyards water and the grapes their final aromatic depth. The long September nights did the rest: phenolic ripeness, without heat character, without compromising on freshness. What Uccelliera subsequently brought into the cellar was concentrated, healthy, clear and – and with that crisp fruitiness that makes Castelnuovo wines unmistakable.

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2019
In Andrea Cortonesi's own words, 2019 was the first vintage since the legendary 1990 that gave him the feeling that everything was in balance. A slow start to vegetation after a rainy winter, a summer without heat peaks, even ripening until September. Harvest from 25 September – clean, healthy, concentrated. Already a stroke of luck for the Annata. For the Riserva: a perfect invitation. But not every vintage becomes a Riserva. And not every grape in the best vintage. Cortonesi only uses the oldest vines for the Riserva – planted in 1975, back when the word Brunello was hardly known outside Montalcino. Seven hectares, spread over sites between 150 and 350 metres in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, calcareous-clayey soils with marl and mineral structure. What grows here has decades of life in it.

“Costabate” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC
There are wines that reveal more about a producer than anything else. Costabate is such a wine. Andrea Cortonesi could have bottled these grapes as Brunello. The vineyards are classified, the vines have been rooted in Castelnuovo dell'Abate since 1988 and the terroir is the same as for his Riserva. But he decided against it. Not because the result would be inferior to Brunello – but because he wanted something different. Something more personal. Something that does not obey the rules of a denomination, but only his own idea of what Sangiovese can be on this hill.

After Andrea Cortonesi bought an almost ruined farmhouse called Uccelliera in Castelnuovo dell'Abate in 1986, he transformed the newly acquired property into a farm primarily dedicated to viticulture. Within just a few years, the agricultural entrepreneur, who came from a farming family, had already achieved success thanks to his professional expertise: Cortonesi's first Brunello di Montalcino was bottled in the 1993 vintage. The company's own wine was immediately well received by lovers of good wines. Although the likeable, yet ambitious and self-critical estate owner still runs a restaurant in Siena near Piazza del Campo, he always makes enough time to run his farm, which is adjacent to flats, and to look after four wines as well as the grappa and olive oil production.
Andrea Cortonesi's carefully tended, densely planted vineyards lie on average 250 metres above sea level and all extend from Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the direction of Sant'Angelo in Colle. The old alabaster quarries, from whose ashlars the Abbey of Sant'Antimo was built, border the vineyards. After small acquisitions and some new plantings, the vineyard area of the Uccelliera farmstead has grown to six and a half hectares.
Although not very high up, the terrain offers very good conditions for cultivating vines. The medium-heavy sandy soils are rich in minerals. The orientation of the rows of vines, the careful manual work in the vineyard and the thinning out of the grapes produce perfectly ripe and flavoured berries. A disused onyx mine not far away provides special wine flavours.
A major remodelling project was completed in Uccelliera in 2008. The old winery has now been extended completely underground to provide sufficient space for all the estate's own barrels - and thus also for the containers that were previously stored in Andrea Cortonesi's flat due to lack of space. SUPERIORE.DE
"Stylistically, they choose a nice middle way between tradition and modernity, even if the use of small French oak barrels and shorter fermentation times have recently come to the fore." Gambero Rosso
"Andrea Cortonesi is one of my favourite producers of Brunello. He is also one of the first wineries I visited many years ago as a young wine writer, and it was an honour to see his career take off in such a spectacular way. I remember his small cellar well on my first visit, and every time I pass his winery today I am surprised and delighted by the signs of recent expansion and development. If anyone epitomises the amazing growth of Brunello di Montalcino, it is Andrea." Robert Parker
