Borrigiano – named after the inhabitants of the medieval village of Il Borro – marks a special chapter in the history of the Ferragamo family. As the estate's first wine under the prestigious Valdarno di Sopra DOC, it combines the tradition of an appellation that was recognised as one of the first four Tuscan wine regions by Cosimo III de' Medici back in 1716. This elegant cuvée of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from organically cultivated vineyards between 300 and 500 metres above sea level in the Valdarno Valley. The unique soil composition – characterised by sandstone, clay and fossilised marine deposits from a prehistoric lake – gives the wine its characteristic minerality. Ten months of ageing in large wooden barrels preserves the lively fruit and creates a harmonious interplay between tradition and innovation.

Mussels in the vineyard? Not uncommon in Valdarno di Sopra. Where today Chardonnay vines take root at the foot of the Pratomagno, millions of years ago there was a lake – the metamorphic soils are criss-crossed with fossilised evidence of that era. The name "Lamelle" honours these grooves in the fossilised shells, which give the wine its unmistakable minerality. After being harvested by hand, the grapes are left to rest overnight at 5°C before being gently pressed. Pure stainless steel vinification at 16°C, two months on the fine lees – that's all it takes to capture the freshness of this terroir.

Pian di Nova embodies a sophisticated blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Sangiovese, which combines the international vigour of the Syrah grape with the lively fruitiness of Tuscan Sangiovese. It represents a new generation of Tuscan red wines that harmoniously balance tradition and innovation. The hand-picked grapes come from organically cultivated vineyards at the foot of Monte Pratomagno, where loamy-sandy soils at an altitude of 200 metres offer optimal drainage. After cooling to 5°C at night, the grape varieties are vinified separately: two days of cold maceration, ten days of controlled fermentation at 25-28°C, followed by a further 20 days of skin maceration. Six months of ageing in Allier oak barriques, one month in steel tanks and a further six months of bottle ageing complete this elegant blend.

Just like its equally famous neighbour Fattoria Petrolo (with its Boggina A), Il Borro can also convince us with a red wine aged in amphorae. Petruna is a single-varietal Sangiovese that is fermented with 12 months of skin contact in hermetically sealed amphorae. The result is surprising, not in the sense of an "interesting" experimental wine, but because the typical character of Sangiovese is fully expressed in freshness, fruit and energy. The bouquet is dominated by cherry and small red berries, plus some orange zest. Its body is of medium weight, which makes it an excellent food companion. Its fresh acidity and a tangle of fine tannins increase the drinking pleasure enormously. We can say that the experiment was successful in an elegant way. SUPERIORE.DE

After meticulous geological studies, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah were planted on the soils that promise them optimal development: Merlot on the clay-rich layers, Cabernet Sauvignon in the alluvial sand, Syrah on the mineral-rich, stony terraces at the foot of Monte Pratomagno. Between 300 and 500 metres above sea level, the vines thrive on sandstone subsoil over a loamy-sandy matrix – a rare combination that was already considered ideal for great wines during the Renaissance. The dense planting of 4,500 vines per hectare forces each vine to fight for nutrients and concentrates the flavours in the berries.

Separate vinification, then the marriage – a blend that bears the signature of Valdarno. What does it mean to elicit the highest form of expression from a grape variety? For the Ferragamos, it is the essence of their wine philosophy – and this Chardonnay is their white manifesto. In a region that, since Cosimo III de' Medici's decree of 1716, has been one of the four noblest wine zones in Tuscany, Il Borro dares to do the unexpected: a white wine that wants to compete with the great Burgundies. The vines are rooted in metamorphic soils interspersed with fossilised sea shells – witnesses to a time when water still covered the land here. At the foot of the Pratomagno, they find that balance of warmth and night-time coolness that gives the Chardonnay both ripeness and freshness. After being harvested by hand in small crates, an unrivalled ageing process begins: part of the must ferments in stainless steel, while the rest is divided between clayver, acacia and oak barriques. Maturation on the fine lees lends texture and depth – each vessel contributes its own nuance before merging into the final cuvée.

An organic vineyard. A Relais & Chateaux luxury resort. A horse stud. Chianina cattle. Vegetable specialities. Zero-emissions project. An entire medieval village restored. All that is true.
It all began when Ferruccio Ferragamo, president of the billion-dollar fashion clan, fell in love with a medieval village, first rented it and finally bought it. That was in 1993 and the starting signal for a showcase project of superlatives.
One hour southeast of Florence, near Arezzo. A village around a fortification from the Middle Ages. Eventful history with famous noble families. Once the Medici went hunting here, later it belonged to the Hohenlohes, the House of Savoy and finally to the Duke of Aosta. In 1997 Ferruccio Ferragamo acquired it and entrusted its management to his son Salvatore, who retired from the fashion empire and "followed his desire to start from scratch, to be a pioneer and not stay in the finished nest".
Organic farming and viticulture, original restored medieval ambience, fine olive oil and wellness spa. The attraction of progress: Salvatore wants to create a zero-emission world with complete energetic self-sufficiency. What has been created and restored here in the last twenty years could fill a book. But let's stick to wine. Because this chapter is also exciting.
The original wine cellar is probably one of the oldest preserved in Tuscany. Magnificently renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the electricity comes from its own photovoltaic hill. 2004 was completed with a newly built part.
Old vineyards were carefully restructured and from the mid-1990s soils were analysed and new vineyards planned and planted. The rootstock vines, clones and grape varieties as well as the orientation were selected analytically for the respective sites. Nothing was left to chance. In addition to autochthonous grape varieties such as Sangiovese, the classic varieties Merlot, Cabernet and a little Petit Verdot were also cultivated. In 2003, "Il Borro", the first wine, came onto the market. In the following year the "Pian di Nova", which should be understood as a second wine, as in the Bordeaux system. The conversion to organic farming began in 2007 avoiding chemicals and adding horn manure and was completed in 2012. In 2015 Il Borro received the organic certification.
The vineyards are located in the hills of Valdarno, at the foot of the Pratomagno mountains, in the basin of a former lake. A mixture of sand, loam and clay, rather barren but with good drainage, offers the vines a good condition to root deeply. The climate is relatively mild, even in winter, the nearby mountains provide good ventilation. In the meantime 85 hectares are in the yield, on 300 to 500 m above sea level. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and macerated in steel vats, and aged for a relatively long time in French wooden barrels. The aim, of course, is to maximise the terroir and the fruit. Recently, the first wines aged in terracotta amphoras have been introduced to the market.
Almost needless to say, Il Borro is a luxurious place to stay and dine. The vineyards can be explored on horseback. Or get married right here. If the Ferragamos do anything, it's perfect. This also applies to the wines, which in recent years have found their way into all guides around the world with high scores.
