Ten years. Appius celebrates its first decade with the 2020 – and what a decade it has been. When Hans Terzer first bottled his dream wine in 2010, he had already been harbouring the idea for a long time. During his vineyard inspections, he had noticed that certain low-yielding old vines in the historic vineyards of Eppan produced a quality that demanded its own framework. Something beyond the celebrated Sanct Valentin line. Originally, the wine was to be called "Oans" – piedmontese for "one" –but the name was taken. So it became Appius: the Roman name for Eppan, derived from Appianum, the "estate of Appius".

Hans Terzer, cellar master since 1977 and named one of the ten best winemakers in the world by Gambero Rosso in 1997, has created his own personal statement with Appius. The cuvée combines 60% Chardonnay with Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc – each variety is fermented and matured separately in small oak barrels. After twelve months in wood, the wine is blended and then matured for a further three years on the fine lees in steel tanks. The Appius only leaves the cellar four years after the harvest. The 2020 vintage was the result of a challenging harvest – and shows precisely the same resilience that characterises the winery.

Intense chartreuse yellow with greenish reflections, a bouquet of kiwi, pineapple, peach and plum, interwoven with roasted hazelnuts and cloves. On the palate: great freshness, vibrant liveliness and an aromatic finish reminiscent of alpine herbs, nettle and mint. Appius is given a new label design every year – the 2020 shows golden geometric shapes on a textured background. A collector's item, limited to a few thousand bottles. And a wine that shows what South Tyrol is capable of when a master realises his dream. SUPERIORE.DE
