Bardolino DOC 2024
From the south-eastern shore of Lake Garda, where moraine soils give the vines mineral depth. Corvina (65%), Rondinella (25%) and Molinara (10%) produce a light, uncomplicated red. Ruby red in colour, with notes of cherry and violet. Dry, spicy, with a fine almond flavour on the finish. Ten days of maceration in stainless steel preserve the fruit and keep the wine lean. Serve at 14–16°C with pizza, pasta or white meat, a great everyday wine that does not hide its terroir. SUPERIORE.DE

!["SanGaetano" Primitivo di Manduria DOP 2023]()
“SanGaetano” Primitivo di Manduria DOP 2023
The name SanGaetano tells of the co-operative tradition: in 2012, Cantine Due Palme took over the small Cooperativa San Gaetano in Lizzano in order to expand the production of Primitivo di Manduria in a targeted manner. This DOC appellation has long been recognised as one of the most important red wine denominations in Apulia – appreciated both in Italy and internationally. The Primitivo vines grow on the characteristic red-coloured soils of Manduria, whose clay-limestone structure is rich in minerals and iron oxides. These soils with their rocky limestone subsoil have a decisive influence on the character of the wine. The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates at the end of August or beginning of September when they are slightly overripe to guarantee the highest quality. After temperature-controlled fermentation, the SanGaetano matures for six months in American oak barrels – an ageing process that refines the tannins and gives the wine additional complexity.

“Don Cosimo” Primitivo del Salento IGP 2023
Cantine Due Palme is one of the most successful co-operatives in southern Italy – founded in 1989 in Cellino San Marco, the cooperative now has over 1,200 members and around 3,000 hectares of vineyards between Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto. Under the management of Angelo Maci, Due Palme has developed into a pioneer of sustainable quality production, combining state-of-the-art cellar technology with traditional cultivation methods such as Alberello Pugliese. Don Cosimo epitomises the sun-drenched power of Salento. The Primitivo grapes ripen on calcareous, loamy soils that store sufficient water even in very hot weather. After a gentle harvest in mid-September, the grapes ferment at a controlled temperature in horizontal rotary fermenters before the wine matures for six months in French barriques and then comes to rest in the bottle.

!["Serre" Susumaniello del Salento IGP 2022]()
“Serre” Susumaniello del Salento IGP 2022
Susumaniello is one of the indigenous grape varieties of Apulia that almost disappeared. Cantine Due Palme was one of the first wineries to recognise the potential of this historic variety from the Alto Salento region around Brindisi and saved it with foresight – vinified in purity to preserve its unique character. The name already reveals its speciality: "Carico come un somarello" – loaded like a donkey – refers to the exceptional fruitiness of the young vines. After around ten years, the yield drops significantly, and only then does Susumaniello produce grapes of astonishing quality. The grapes are easy to recognise: Their ink-blue coloured berries have an extremely high anthocyanin content, which is why Susumaniello was often used as a blending partner in the past to lend depth of colour to other wines. For the Serre, the grapes are harvested by hand in small crates late at the end of September, when they are slightly overripe for optimum concentration. Vinification takes place in horizontal rotary fermenters at a controlled temperature, followed by six months of ageing in French barriques.

!["Vitiano" Rosso Umbria IGP 2024]()
“Vitiano” Rosso Umbria IGP 2024
Since its creation in 1998, Vitiano Rosso has been one of the most successful Italian red wines on the international market – a classic that masterfully combines tradition and modernity. The grapes grow on the hills around Orvieto, where sedimentary limestone-clay soils with volcanic influences form the basis, at an altitude of around 300 metres. The blend of one third each of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is vinified separately: Merlot contributes fullness and velvety texture, Cabernet Sauvignon lends structure and depth, while Sangiovese provides balance with its lively acidity.

!["Marena" Merlot Terre Siciliane IGT 2024]()
“Marena” Merlot Terre Siciliane IGT 2024
A Sicilian Merlot with a Mediterranean soul: the grapes for Marena come from the higher, well-ventilated vineyards inland around Presti e Pegni. Merlot thrives there with warm days and cool nights on calcareous soils with an ideal ripening process. Brilliant ruby red in the glass with a purple hue. The aroma opens with flavours of juicy cherry, plum and a hint of herbal spice. Round, juicy and accessible on the palate with well-integrated tannins, mild freshness and a pleasantly dry finish. The ageing in stainless steel tanks preserves the fruit and varietal character. An uncomplicated, yet harmonious Merlot, whose approachable style makes it ideal for pizza, pasta and relaxed everyday moments – sicilian and full of character. SUPERIORE.DE

"Italian red wines are better than French ..." joked Italy's Chancellor Renzi to France's President Hollande. And that is not wrong at all, because in many blind tastings worldwide Italian red wines often won clearly against the French. Very often it was the Supertuscans from Tuscany. The grape varieties in Bolgheri and Maremma are similar to those in Bordeaux. Ornellaia, Sassicaia or also the Saffredi are sought-after wines of the top denomination.
Many international awards - above all high Parker points - of course always reach the three "B's". Barolo and Barbaresco with the elegance of Piedmont's Nebbiolo grape and Brunello di Montalcino - the best of grapes that can be pressed in Tuscany from Sangiovese.
ITALIAN RED WINE - IDEAL ACCOMPANIMENT TO REGIONAL CUISINE.
However, Italy has good red wines in all regions, because here red wine or white wine is always drunk with food. And the regional red wines go well with the regional cuisine. This is why e.g.
- Vernatsch and Lagrein to South Tyrolean bacon,
- Chianti with pasta and pizza,
- the angular Sagrantino di Montefalco to the hearty Salami di Cinghiale,
- Valpolicella and Amarone to the powerful dishes of Veneto,
- Montepulciano to the stews of Abruzzo or
- the powerful Cannonau to the mostly rustic lamb dishes of Sardinia.
As you can see, in our red wine assortment you will surely find the ideal wine for your favourite dish of Italian cuisine.
NATIVE VARIETY - RED WINE FROM ITALY LOVES IT ORIGINALLY.
Autochthonous grape varieties - and there are more than 1,000 different ones in Italy - are on the rise again in all regions, above all Marzemino from Veneto, Freisa and Favorita from Piedmont, Negroamaro, Susumaniello and primitive from Apulia and much more. The return to tradition and terroir is particularly pronounced in Sicily, where Cerasuolo, Nero d'Avola or the elegant Burgundy wines of Aetna from the varieties of the Nerello grape have been experiencing a real hype for years.
