“Villa Chigi” Chianti DOCG 2023
Poggio Bonelli in Castelnuovo Berardenga looks back on a centuries-old tradition – coveted over the centuries by Siena's most prestigious noble families, from the medieval Spennali to the powerful Piccolomini and the Chigi Saracini. Today, Villa Chigi honours the memory of Count Guido Chigi Saracini, who was not only a passionate wine lover but also founded the famous Accademia Chigiana in 1932. The vineyards are perched 280 metres above sea level on the sun-drenched southern slopes of the Chianti zone around Castelnuovo Berardenga. Here, between the warm, typically Mediterranean Chianti hills and the plains of the Crete Senesi, the vines benefit from excellent breezes and air circulation, which limit the risk of water stagnation and humidity. The special transitional soils between clayey, sandy sediments and atypical Chianti soils create ideal conditions for Sangiovese.

“Cretum” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
Three grape varieties, three characters, one wine: Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon share the Cretum Rosso in equal parts – an assemblage that could not be more typical of southern Tuscany. Each variety is vinified separately and only then do they come together in the tonneau. The Sangiovese thus retains its lively acidity and cherry fruit temperament, while Merlot contributes fullness and Cabernet structure.

!["Cretum" Bianco di Toscana IGT 2024]()
“Cretum” Bianco di Toscana IGT 2024
The name says it all: "Cretum" refers to the Crete Senesi, those moon-like clay hills that stretch south of Siena. Poggio Bonelli lies on their threshold – in the extreme south of the Chianti Classico, where the vineyards of Castelnuovo Berardenga merge into the barren beauty of the Crete. Soils from the Pliocene, over five million years old, characterise the wines here: clay-rich tuff interspersed with sand. Chardonnay and Viognier come together in this terroir.

“Poggio Bonelli” Chianti Classico DOCG 2022
Castelnuovo Berardenga marks the southernmost tip of the Chianti Classico, where the gentle hills of the historic centre merge into the austere beauty of the Crete Senesi. Here, on south-facing slopes at an altitude of 280 metres, the Sangiovese finds the warmth that gives it fullness without losing its lively acidity. Poggio Bonelli presses its Chianti Classico as a genuine expression of this grape variety: 90 per cent Sangiovese, supplemented by a small proportion of other red varieties. After temperature-controlled fermentation and ten days of maceration, the wine matures for ten months in French oak barrels.

!["Tramonto d'Oca" Toscana IGT 2019]()
“Tramonto d’Oca” Toscana IGT 2019
A wine that breaks all conventions. Tramonto d'Oca (Goose Dawn) is Poggio Bonelli's most extraordinary creation and at the same time an oenological venture of rare audacity. As one of the few single-varietal Petit Verdot wines in Italy, it embodies the courage to innovate that characterised the historic noble families of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Petit Verdot, the mysterious "little green grape variety" from the French south-west, has found a new home in the warm, sun-kissed hills of southern Tuscany. Here, at an altitude of 280 metres with perfect southern exposure, this late-ripening, capricious variety thrives under ideal conditions. The strictly limited yield of just 50 centners per hectare and meticulous hand-picking guarantee grapes of exceptional concentration and ripeness.

As early as the 16th century, the Poggio Bonelli winery in the extreme south of Chianti Classico began to cultivate wine. Over the centuries, the estate has been owned by various noble families from Siena. At first it was inhabited by the Spennali family. In the second half of the 16th century the estate belonged to the prominent Piccolomini family. Later, the estate passed to the Landucci family. She managed the estate first alone, later with the help of the Croci family until well into the 20th century. The Poggio Bonelli estate started production in 1950. 35 years later, the 810-hectare estate was sold to MPS Tenimenti, the agricultural subsidiary of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the oldest bank in the world.
Today the Poggio Bonelli winery produces not only fine wines of very high quality from the fruits of 8,000 olive trees, but also extra virgin olive oil. On top of that, it runs an agriturismo business. The vineyards cover an area of 83 hectares near Castelnuovo Berardenga. There the wines find their special fullness and strength. The southern and south-western areas are planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The berries are strictly selected after harvesting. The soils, which date back to the Pliocene period, are rich in clay, tuff and sand.
A few years ago the restructuring of the vineyard and the winery was completed. New vineyards were planted and old wooden barrels were completely replaced. Production was streamlined to just a few labels. Poggio Bonelli's wines are vinified today in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and later matured mainly in small French oak barrels before being refined in the bottle.
Poggiassai, a cuvée of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is one of the house's top products. Star oenologist Carlo Ferrini has been on board since 1999. Together with Leonardo Pini, he closely watches over the production. SUPERIORE.DE
"Through a strict vineyard management following modern criteria, the labels of Poggio Bonelli gain an international profile, characterized by great concentration."Gambero Rosso
