1172 – the year in which Volpaia is first mentioned in documents. A small, fortified borgo on a hill north of Radda in Chianti, built as a border fortress between Florence and Siena. Today it is a jewel of peace and beauty and one of the most historic wine villages in Tuscany. Here, where soldiers once stood guard, the Stianti-Mascheroni families now press their grapes within the medieval walls. The bottles mature in the vaults of old churches and almost every cellar contains a tank of organic wine. An entire village dedicated to viticulture. So complete that it becomes poetic again. The Riserva is made from 100% Sangiovese from vineyards between 400 and 600 metres above sea level. One of the highest wineries in the region. Up here, where the air is thin and the nights are cool, Sangiovese develops the elegance and minerality that makes Volpaia so distinctive. Sandstone, clay and sandy-loamy soils with a high proportion of skeleton. Manual harvest in the second half of September, temperature-controlled vinification, then 24 months in French and Slovenian oak barrels.
Ruby red with light garnet reflections. The bouquet is elegant and intense: clear tones of cherry and dark berries, accompanied by notes of crushed lime, blue flowers and a hint of wild herbs and blackberry bushes. Elements that are often found in wines from this corner of Tuscany and that make Volpaia so authentic. Structured and persistent on the palate, with an important tannic structure that nevertheless offers good drinkability. Juicy, fresh and crisp, with savoury and deep tannins. A Riserva of remarkable integrity. Clean and decisive, seductive and elegant at the same time. SUPERIORE.DE
"Brilliant ruby red colour with delicate violet highlights. Complex nose with hints of ripe berries, slight hints of undergrowth and roses. Intense and juicy on the palate, balanced on the finish with powerful tannins." Falstaff
"Aromas of sweet cherries and vanilla come first, followed by savoury, umami notes of damp earth, undergrowth, balsamic, herbs and a hint of pepper. On the palate, dark, ripe berries and more earth emerge, and the pepper is underlined by acidity, but a blanket of soft tannins keeps everything in check." Wine Enthusiast
"A structured, powerful and flavourful Riserva with aromas of dark cherries, wild currants, dried herbs and some stones. It is medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Focused and precise, with a velvety core of juicy cherries in the centre and a solid and harmonious tannic framework. Lively and flavourful finish with excellent length." James Suckling
"In the black labelled bottle, the Volpaia 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Volpaia shows impeccable balance with fresh acidity and plenty of bright primary fruit, cherry and blackcurrant. The tannins are powdery and provide enough structure to give a pleasant feeling of firmness. All in all, the wine is very true to Sangiovese." Wine Advocate
"The Chianti Classico Riserva 2021 is fabulous. Vibrant and translucent in the glass, it offers so much pedigree. Dark cherry, leather, liquorice, tobacco and lavender are some of the many nuances that unfold in the glass. The harvestwill find a deceptively medium-bodied Riserva with remarkable balance." Vinous
"The Volpaia story is intricately connected to the Florentine Renaissance – one of the early owners was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. This organic, 100% Sangiovese comes from vineyards at up to 600m and spends 24 months in oak casks and at least three months in bottle before release. It offers aromas of dusty red cherry, ripe tomato, aged balsamic, tobacco, a hint of game and the distinctive firmness, bite and savour of Radda UGA." Decanter
"This expressive red shows aromas and flavours of cherries, blackberries, pomegranates and orange peel. Mineral accents and wild herbs add depth, while the long finish offers excellent balance and length. Although impressive now, it should continue to develop well." Wine Spectator
